Name: Marianna & Micah Whitson
Location: Arlington, Massachusetts
Size: 1,000 square feet
Years lived in: 2 years; Rented
Moving north for their advertising jobs, Marianna and Micah have created a comfortable place that celebrates both their roots and their current locale. From North Carolina and Alabama, the pair has even built a business around sharing slices of the south with those who miss it like they do. Though their letterpress prints are only some of the memories this place holds for home.
Before starting Old Try, Marianna and Micah were already lovers of letterpress. You'll spot prints all over their space; their guest room has posters from Nashville's historic Hatch Show Prints. Micah even proposed on a poster, and although it had to be screenprinted to be done in time for Christmas with the family, Marianna said yes anyway.
Touches of family and history fill their space. A relative's reading glasses rest on the bookshelf, an old barn desk repurposed into a coffee table, a vintage lacrosse stick (Marianna played and now coaches) hangs on the wall. Marianna's grandfather built each of his granddaughters writing desks, and hers lives in the guest room, under a vintage North Carolina flag. Visually, the fireplace is the main draw, and nothing illustrates their mixing of the past and present better. Jars line the mantel filled with cotton and cranberries, clothespins and seashells. There's also an empty one, awaiting new memories.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: We wanted our apartment to feel homey and comfortable, with clean lines and unique accents.
Inspiration: We're inspired by all kinds of things — If we're awake, we're looking for inspiration. We love colors and nature, Tar Heel basketball and Ole Miss football, type and logos, traditional and modern.
Favorite Element: Bus Roll Signs — Micah was born in Huntsville and grew up in the region where this 1946 Greyhound rambled, so many of the cities on the signs are places he knows well.
Biggest Challenge: Combining our styles and making the most of our limited space.
What Friends Say: "Man, it sure took a long time to get out here on the 77. Oh my gosh, I love your house!"
Biggest Embarrassment: Guest room. We haven't spent much real time decorating it since guests are rare, and we hope it'll be turned into a nursery in the near future. It's just embarrassing because it's so mismatched compared to the rest of our house.
Proudest DIY: Coffee Table (even though we had no idea what we were doing!).
The table used to be a tall desk from an old barn in Arkansas. We weren't using it and needed a coffee table, so one day we decided to cut the legs down. That worked pretty well, so we decided to sand the finish, too. Our inexperience with a belt sander shows, but the desk was already weathered and worn, so it just adds character.
Biggest Indulgence: Herman Miller Mirra desk chair
Best Advice: Keep clutter to a minimum — try to make sure that all tchotchkes are meaningful to you or bring something specific to a room.
Dream Sources: West Elm, Design Within Reach, Brimfield Antiques Show, Schoolhouse Electric & Supply Co.

Shaw's Original Fir...
This house makes me think "responsible adults live here"
Cute photo of the couple, perfectly color coordinated with their accessorized sofa!
Lovely place, but seems staged somehow.
Love the beams and general coziness of the place. I've had the same Fairfield Porter print for many years and still enjoy looking at it. Your sunny bedroom is delightful!
Those kitchen curtains are beautiful and so cheerful.
Arlington is a great place to live. I am loving the colors used in your home. They all flow well and work together. You are a cute couple and have style to boot. Best wishes turning that guest room into a nursery. A very stylish baby it will be.
Nice job! Marianna, I love that you incorporated such a meaningful piece of furniture from your childhood; it looks lovely in your home.
Not at all a dig on Marianna & Micah, but does the off center fireplace bother anyone else...or is my ocd acting up ;)
LOVE the chartreuse coat-rack/umbrella-stand!!
Lovely colors in the LR, the green & blue chairs - and the chest that the TV's on is to die for!
Agree about the kitchen curtains, they're absolutely perfect for the space!
I can't imagine wanting to have a picture of a politician in my home, Obama or anyone else.
I love your old desk.
I was wondering if you guys were renting or not while I was looking through the tour, and then I spotted Ye Olden Dreaded Boob Light. Then I knew! :D
I can't even believe how perfect and cozy this house is. What a sweet couple. And that kitchen!
YES! I love your home, the wonderful prints and the fab color used throughout! You guys are great!
Love love love your home. Good job, gave me a couple of ideas to use in my own home.
Wow -- beautiful home. Love all of the artwork --the 'Say Yes', 'Change', and coffee posters are great. Nice kitchen too. really nice colors and details.
Unpainted wood - love!
Incredibly charming space with a peaceful flow. Well done.
@ Aninhas: it's not just your OCD;)
@ CallDoctorBison: not can I
*nor*
@CallDoctorBison and @Discerning...my grandmother kept an autographed print of Richard Nixon on her bookshelf for more than thirty-five years. That truly was an interesting design choice.
I love how this place looks cozy and comfortable. And what a special way to propose! Great poster :)
A lot of warmth here. Might I suggest editing what is on the fireplace mantle
and above it? :)
Beautiful! I thought this was a house rather than an apartment though lol.
That's an Arlington house, for sure!
I live here too. There are about three basic two-family house designs. They are lucky to live in one with the beautiful coffered ceiling (not me, mine is much simpler). But the designs are all pleasing and very geared toward a comfortable flow from front to back of house, and in spite of recent storms we have many lovely old trees shading our streets and porches.
The paint color in the entry way is DIVINE. I'm inspired- thank you!
LOVE your home!
I seriously love the woodwork. And the green kitchen. And Oneonta, Al. Y'all are too cute.
I grew up near Miami, OK. So fun to see that pennant. Lovely apartment. And your grandfather is a very talented furniture maker!
Would like to know if their business is on the internet or if it is local. I miss the south & have to sell my house to move back. Also, I hate to say it, but I would have to do something about that fireplace.
Love the graphic posters! I was shocked to find another couple with the same name! I'm Marianna and my husband is Micah!!!!!!
Some nice things, but interior seems staged or stiff in some way.
I think the groupings of pics on wall would look better with less space btwn them, then they'd act more as a whole, less like things just hanging on a wall in close proximity to one another.
nice house... a little heavy on the typography, though
I'm thinking about buying a Mirra chair. How do you like yours? Worth the money? Any opinion on how it stacks up to the basic Aeron, the Sayl, the Knoll Generation, or the Steelcase Think Chair?
I enjoy your company's work. Good luck.
@ CallDoctorBison: In my home I display a framed b&w photo by Teenie Harris of John F. Kennedy, taken in 1959 while he was campaigning in Monessen, PA. It's one of my prized possessions and definitely something I'd grab in case of fire.
This is such a warm and inviting home with beautiful artwork and collections. I love it all--especially that old bus roll!
It always makes me laugh when people say the places looked staged! I'm not being funny but if someone was coming round to photograph my place I would stage it too... Toaster in cupbpoard, all the paper away, duvet cover completely straight, etc... but I don't live like that...
I am sure a surprise House Tour would look a lot different...if anyone would let the photographer in to take pictures. :)
I like the Hatch Show Print.
Random favor/question. I'm thinking of buying the Restoration Hardware Printmaker's Media Console, but can't find the dimensions of the fold down middle shelves anywhere. Is there any chance you could measure it and tell me how deep it is? I'd love to buy it but have to make sure my receiver will fit!
