- What do you love about your bedroom?:
- This room is on the small side for a Master Bedroom (around 12 x 14). Just because it's small didn't mean I wanted to skimp on adding the things I love. In my case it just happened to be color and books. By placing the bookshelves on either side of the window we were able to create a little reading nook with two small scale chairs and a side table. I love that the room feels collected and very "us".
- What are your tips for creating a beautiful, healthy and organized bedroom?
- Don't be afraid to bring in the things that you love. If you love books bring them in. If red is your thing, go for it. It's all about creating a room you want to be in and that starts with having the things that inspire surround you in your space.
To stay organized choose pieces of furniture that combine closed and open storage. Our bookshelves have closed door storage on the bottom where we store extra blankets, the side tables have drawers for things like eyeglasses and contact lens solution, storage baskets house our sheets. Everything really needs to do double duty in a small space.
- In modern homes, bedrooms have become more than just a place to sleep; they can be a retreat, a home office, a library, a relaxation zone. What are some ways you make the most of your bedroom?
- No matter what the size your room can live large. Create zones for the things you often enjoying doing in your bedroom as well as the things you need to do. We have a zones for sleeping, reading and organizing.
Also try and think outside of the box, just because it's a bedroom doesn't mean you can't have a wall of books if that makes you happy. At the end of the day it's your space to enjoy and bring in the things you love. You'll never regret it.

Love the pillow on the bed! Where is it from?
Wow. Filing this away as inspiration for my new apartment! So lovely!
The colors in this room are so pleasing. What paint colors are they?
I am curious how long those chairs have been there and how many times you have used both of them at the same time to curl up and read? I think they are very pretty but they strike me as more for show than for actual use. I would rather see one chair more comfy kick back in chair than two of these pretty but not so curl up with a book chairs.
the draperies are fantastic & very luxurious...
the room is extremely tranquil, however the bookshelves seem to suck the airy quality right out of the room. they dominate.
Love the curtains! Where are they from?
I love your curtains!
I'm always intrigued by what's on people's bookshelves. I have the same British Lit textbook on mine :) Very cozy room!
The pillow on the bed is Ikea - I just bought 2 of those over the weekend. I love the fabric of those curtains!! Stunning color. This is gorgeous!
This is so beautiful is such a simple, casual way.
I almost never like a white room, this one is amazing! For a smallish room you sure fit a good amount of stuff in it without making it feel crowded.
This has to be my very favorite "white walled" room of all time. It makes me want to go home and change my entire bedroom so it looks just like this! This has to have been done by a professioanl decorator! It is just 'ever so loverly'. It sort of lookes liek a Sarah Richardson kid of design (whose work I admire sooo much) I just LOVE it! I seriously think I will paint my bedroom white and get those fabulous curtains.
Thanks for all your kind words about our bedroom.
@aander47 the pillow on the bed is from Ikea
@thorndale the color in the room is Martha Stewart's "Pip" color matched to Benjamin Moore Paint.
@Susan4260 I also love Sarah Richards designs too and I wanted to bring some of that feel into my own space. While I could never do her designs justice this room is loosely inspired by the farmhouse bedroom she created for one of her shows.
To everyone who asked, I made the curtains, the fabric is Robert Allen's Khandar fabric in Jewel.

Those curtains really do make the room! I love your room!
Nice! Love the curtains too. I also personally love a white bed. Where is the folded comforter from and the pretty silver lamps? Thanks!!
Thanks! The white comforter is from Pottery Barn and the silver lamps are another IKEA find.
Draperies are fantastic, love the books. This bedroom has a wonderful sense of style while showing up as a peaceful, well ordered retreat.
Very nice!
Thank you for posting the fabric for the curtains!! I'm going to have to purchase for some drapes in my own bedroom. It will be my 'summer curtains'.
So crisp and cheery at the same time. Like others have said, you make me love white again.
Love the white bed with the colorful curtains. Pretty. It would be even more comfy if you would get rid of the two chairs, and instead have one that you could curl up in.
I have always, always loved an all white bed which I have. Love your uses of color & patterns & the bookshelves are fabulous!! Beautifully done :)
Gorgeous and comfy! White beds with accent colors are the way to go(mine included). The curtains are to die for and I never get tired of the combo with the matchsticks for depth and texture.
Well done and thanks for sharing!
What a beautiful room! We've been thinking about similar blinds/shades for bedroom use, but I am concerned that they don't block light very well. Have they worked for you?
This is stunning! I'm so inspired to make some punchy curtains for my bedroom now.
To answer your question about the bamboo shades, light does filter in and they do not block light completely. I would say they do an OK job of filtering it. If we want the room completely dark we close the curtains over the top. They also make a privacy filter that you can attach separately on the back if you don't have any curtains to close that I have contemplated buying, but for now the curtains work for us.
I don't always like strong light/dark contrast (the dark wood, the loads of white), but here I think it works beautifully. It's a great room.
Love love love. Source for the lights?
I love the bold black and white pillow with the multicolor ikat drapery. I also recognize the pillow fabric on the chair (and drapery). Did you get that at Calico?
Well done, I love the mix of patterns against the white. I am thinking of bamboo blinds as well - where did you get yours that they have the option of a backing to block out the light (that you spoke of). Thanks!
The pillow is the Wonderland fabric by Braemore and the drapery fabric is Robert Allen's Khandar...not sure if Calico carries it but they might.
Thanks, the nightstand lights are from IKEA
They're simple bamboo shades from Home Depot, last time I looked they sell the lining separately on their website.
Yes, I have to agree with Glasseye...the book cases seem to suck the life out. And I LOVE books in the bedroom. Maybe if they were a different color and not so looming. I have two of those Ikea pillows and love them!
I see that the chairs are not a place to curl up for an afternoon of "Gone With The Wind," but in a bedroom I don't want a chair so snuggly that putting on boots, tights, etc., becomes a gymnastic event. Those chairs are just right for dressing and for coffee and the paper -- now, if I could just get the first person out of bed to bring those to me . . . .
Definitely filing that curtain fabric away for future use, thanks for telling us where it's from! However, ten points from Gryffindor for the Twilight books. :(((((
Lol, Oh don't worry if you look close Gryffindor is represented! But don't look too closely, my trashy beach reads are there too ;)
"You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart"
Gorgeous and original
I'm not generally a fan of white rooms, but I think this looks great. I love the brown bookcases. I think the contrast they provide really helps those fabulous curtains "pop"!
WOW! I love this so much.
love the brightness of this room!
Love this room - especially the small table with the two chairs. Where did you get the lamp with the lavender lamp shade?
I think the most impressive thing about this bedroom is the transformation it has undergone in multiple stages and the DIYs. I stumbled across Maria's blog, www.ourlakelife.com, while searching for the drape fabric she used. Truly inspirational. Great job!
I absolutely love this room! I really love the library nook with the bookcases, armchairs and lamp. What a gorgeous space. It makes me happy. Also, i'm assuming we have a former lit major? The Norton Anthology is a strong indicator. :)

love it!
My favourite!!
I love, love, love this room. It is exactly what I would have chosen in college, mostly because of the bookcase. But still, beautiful room.
Love the curtains!!
I actually really love the bookcases. I think they really add to the cozy feeling of the room.
The bookcases and the table and chairs in between them is a novel idea. Wow. It makes the room pop and gives it much character. The curtains tie it all in. Marvelous undertaking which honestly works. I would cozy up in this room any day! Bravo!
I saw this room on Houzz -- appears as if it was professionally designed. it's a lovely lovely room -- one of the best. But have to ask whether pro vs average joe is fair?
It's interesting how the black and white pillow pulls the whole room together.
I recently decided that I need a bookcase in my bedroom. Don't know why it didn't occur to me sooner, since I have books piled all over the floor and I read mostly in the bedroom. Plus I love libraries and they make me feel peaceful and content, just the feeling you want in a bedroom.
HI there,
I just wanted to say that I'm flattered that you would think it's professionally designed but I'm not a professional. Some older photos of the room are on Houzz but I uploaded them there myself (anyone can upload photos to Houzz).
Thanks again for your comment you made my day ;)
I think it's wonderful to see books in a bookcase.
Beautiful, relaxing retreat, Maria. I'd curl up with a book and never leave the room! Great job!
