Marijke's Colorful Cologne Balcony

It is the fourth summer with my Cologne apartment and its balcony — and the first time I ever got the time to properly put plants on it! The view (of course) is a highlight and a major reason why I choose this apartment four years ago. The concept for the balcony: it's all about colors, I wanted to create a playful and vintage-inspired outside space.

It's only 3 square meters so I had to find a table that doesn't take half of the space. Since I am a student I have to look for budget solutions, I stuck with IKEA for the table and the chairs. The rest: pots, the lamps and the sunshade are vintage from the local fleamarket.

I love to sit here and have all kinds of meals with friends, especially in the evening we like to have a glass of wine and enjoy the panoramic views of Cologne.

The balcony has a southerly exposition, so I choose plants that need a lot of sunlight. I grow my own strawberries and tomatoes, as well as some herbs like basil, dill and tarragon. The little birch was growing in the roof rail, I rescued it and put it in a pot.

During the cold seasons I merely use the space to dry my clothes.

Thanks Marijke!
