Name: Marina
Location: Upper West Side, NYC
Size: 650 sqft. rental
Years Lived In: 2+ years
During an eighteen-month stint in Boston, Marina acquired 95% of her current furnishings and nearly 100% of her design awareness, knowledge, and inspiration. She lived in the South End and spent most of her free time in the design shops, where she got to know the inventory and the owners very well.
When she moved back to NYC two years ago, Marina had just one weekend to find an apartment! Though it was far from ideal, it was very close to Central Park. Marina signed a lease on a cookie-cutter one-bedroom apartment in a brand new development. Though it was a world apart from the character-rich apartment she had left behind, Marina was determined to create a charming space that would be her home for the next couple of years.
"It's much easier to take [this apartment] and make it modern and crisp. It's much harder to achieve a warmth and elegance more often found in a Victorian." While it may have been a challenge, Marina managed to soften the space very successfully. In fact, within one day of moving in, she had recreated her cozy old Boston home. Since then, she's added a few new details, and continued to search for an apartment that would allow her greater flexibility to create something special.
Epilogue: Marina is moving out in a few weeks, as she has found the rental of her dreams — a loft space with a lot of exposed brick and a landlord who has granted Marina carte blanche on any changes she may wish to make. Stay tuned!
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Style: Eclectic modern.
Inspiration: Thomas O'Brien / Aero Studios, Yancey Richardson's apartment — especially the stunning photography, Boston's South End decor shops
Favorite Element: My photography collection.
Biggest Challenge: Adding warmth and character to a cookie-cutter new development rental with a boring layout. Also, luring my downtown-dwelling friends to visit... having a full bar and basic mixology skills helps.
What Friends Say: "Sweet! Can you make me a drink?"
Biggest Embarrassment: Never getting around to installing some sheer drapes in the living room to cover up the views of the dull grey high-rise (a.k.a. "the mothership") across the street.
Proudest DIY: Ok, not a true DIY (I'm decidedly not handy) — but managing to transition all my furniture and belongings from a 1000+ square foot open loft in Boston into a classically small NYC one-bedroom was some accomplishment.
Biggest Indulgence: Definitely the upholstery. Years ago in Boston, I came across an unbelievable floor model sale at an otherwise pricy furniture shop. I came away with two sofas and a bed — hands down my best and most useful impulse buy ever.
Best Advice: Renters — choose versatile, compact furnishings that could suit different kinds of spaces. Unless you have the luxury or ample space and light, low and neutral-colored furniture complements small spaces better and makes the transition from one rental to the next easier and less costly. You can always add color and flair with accessories and interesting details.

Nomade Express Slee...
Beautiful space, beautiful furniture, beautifully put together. And really great photo collection!
Fantastic photo collection!!
Another 'stuff' tour. I hate going through the pictures just to see a pair of shoes or knick kacks. I'm more interested in seeing the entire space and not close ups...but maybe that's just me.
For the few pictures that did show the living room and kitchen-I do like this lay-out. Those windows are wonderful.
Beautiful. The view of the highrise remind me of the great photos of Andreas Gursky. No need for curtains.
http://nymag.com/arts/art/reviews/31785/
Also really love the tray of photo booth strips and snapshots on the side table. Clever.
Well it's nice to see art on the walls! Too many of the modern spaces featured here have bare walls. Always looks like the people are afraid to commit to anything that would pin them down as having a particular level of taste.
Have to say, I see nothing "cookie cutter" about the place. I'd be perfectly happy to live there.
Cat on counter...please no!
You did a great job making this apt unique and personal. Def an accomplishment considering the pain of nyc cookie cutter apartments. I do not get it, there does not appear to be a single developer here with an original idea. Anyway... curious, are your dining chairs from room and board, too? Also, any chance you can tell us which neighborhood you're moving to? I can only imagine a loft space with brick exists in brooklyn....
I love your apartment, and that cat is adorable. I actually had to scroll back because that cat was so beautiful.
I love this space. Very nice home and decorating. I'm always on the lookout for bedside carafes, and the light pink & blue ones that you have in the bedroom are great. Could i kindly ask where you found those?
freaking GORGEOUS. drooled over every photo.
Love love love it. Nice work!
You've done a really nice job, I'm also drooling and have reviewed every frame over and over - lots of inspiration. Furniture and art are great and highlight the beauty of the eclectic style. I'm impressed with everything you've managed to squeeze in without it looking cramped. I've recently moved into a 600ft2 space and appreciate the challenge of making what you have (and love!) work. I've done something similar in utilizing my bar area for table and chairs - so much more comfortable - and only wish my bedroom could accomodate a little sitting area like that (fab chairs!) I agree with @duane hill that it'd be a shame to cover your windows, they are indeed art and fit nicely with your photos. I totally agree with @b77 about the excess of liquor bottles. I'd limit it to what you have on the credenza and stow the rest in one of those lovely glass cupboards.
LOVE your leather/chrome chairs in the family room. where did you get them?
I love the lamp on the side table in the living room. Where did you find that? The colors are wonderful.
perchance might you source the magazine rack next to the bed? i could really use something like that.
Thank you for all the kind comments!
@RuralandRueful - the butterfly head probably came from a Boston shop years ago but I did a search for "butterfly phrenology head" and a few sites came up, this one looks best priced (small size) http://www.welldressedhome.com/phrenologyhead.html
@B77 - I'm with you on the liquor bottles, it's quite embarrassing and believe it or not there are twice as many in the cabinet below the counter; definitely putting them out of sight when I have some more storage space in my new place
@smariel - the dining chairs are from Design Within Reach; the new place is on 8th Avenue in Chelsea in a prewar walk-up - I saw over 120 apartments (crazy, I know!) over several months before finding this gem
@Sallyride - the carafes are from Lekker in Boston, they still carry the blue one - http://www.lekkerhome.com/Bedside-Carafe-Recycled-Glass.html and I just looked on the Internet for the other one and looks like you can find it here - http://www.apartment48.com/shop/bedside-carafe-tumbler.htm
@tinybubbles - the chrome and leather chairs are also Design Within Reach, they also come with black leather I believe
@goldiegirl - I got the multicolored lamp on one kings lane a while ago when that site just launched and have been looking for a second one to complete the pair since then, but no luck! If you find it on the internet by chance, please let me know where!!
@ladyJ - the magazine rack is from Future Perfect in brooklyn, also on their site here: http://shop.thefutureperfect.com/accessories/float-magazine-rack.html
The art is PERFECTION. Especially these http://gallery.apartmenttherapy.com/photo/marina-ht/item/346363 So cute.
love most everything in the tour except the cowhide rug. That bums me out.
What RLMESQ said:
"freaking GORGEOUS. drooled over every photo."
Really nice done. Love the light fixture in the LR, the roll up blinds, the bar!!! (can I come in for a drink?), the kitty on the counter and on the chair, the mirrors, absolutely everything.
I cannot wait to see your new loft.
Loved it and especially loved those chairs in the bedroom! Can you please provide the source?
Thank you so much, Marina P, for the link!
@Ellieelliehead - the bedroom chairs are from a wonderful Boston boutique Hudson - http://www.hudson-boston.com/ - the frames are antique flea market find and the chairs were reupholstered by the Hudson designers. Unfortunately, most of their antiques are not on the website but if you are ever in Boston, it's a really great spot to visit.
Gorgeous apartment, gorgeous kitty, but kitty would be VERY DEAD, VERY QUICK if I discovered it on my kitchen counter!
Just finishing Jonathon Lethem's The Fortress of Solitude, Love him! Really great photographs, especially the pool collection. Your apartment has class!
Awesome. Where are the mirrored lamps in the bedroom from?
Beautiful apartment!! And I'm so grateful that I'm not the only one with cats strolling on my countertops.
Love those dining chairs, but I just looked them up on DWR and they're $650 each - yikes! Anyone know a similar alternative? And why it's called Design Within Reach???
Btw, I like the four pictures above the white sofa - the colors are perfect for that space.
Love it! For others, good luck keeping a cat off of or out of anywhere. Mine wouldn't stand for it, at least.
Any info on the wall lamps would really be appreciated.
What a great job on your color choices - you managed to make white walls feel like a choice and not a symptom of a renter's place. Love your taste in art as well.
Gorgeous kitty who looks just fine on those countertops! I've said it before - that's what cleaning product is for.
well done. i love it.
Have to make a stand for the closeups, while the shoe pick isn't a great example. Designing at home is so much about vignettes when you're dealing with a lot of stuff on hand. It's just as much about the success of living in something you love, for people to mimic, as it is getting a feeling. The photos are holistic and personal, it would be an ever better tour if we could just be there.
I agree--this lamp is beautiful. I've seen this before elsewhere but can't remember the source!
I admit it... I"m biased! Love this house, but it was the dining room that drew me in because, well, it looks like MY dining room (to a degree!) Though rather than elect an actual Saarinen tulip table, we went with a cheap Ikea Doksta. Like you, we collected a set of 4 midcentury teak/walnut chairs w/ black vinyl that look stunning against the white sleek table. <3
This space is lovely lovely lovely!
I just acquired some devastatingly handsome walnut/vinyl MCM chairs for dining use and was quite undecided the style of table to pair with them, and, what do you know, the answer is a round white table--of course!
That cat looks like a Bengal or Savannah to me--good luck keeping those off the counter or anything high for that matter.
This is a beautiful apartment, the Art gives it a great feel and I just adore that Cat, why is everyone so anal about the cat on the counter, thats what cleaning is for . Cats are very clean, and who the heck eats off the counter. Is it a Bengal.
This is getting seriously annoying.
MyLittleIslandParadise commented 'I totally agree with @b77 about the excess of liquor bottles'. But lo, when one goes back through the comments to see what b77 said, there is nothing to be found.
AT: genuine question here. I love this site, but what's with all the comment deletion? Do you really think the subjects of your shoots are *that* sensitive? Why are you not as vigilant about ridding the comments section of the damn spammers??
I love that you have a table and chairs and lots of seating in the living room. It is very hospitable. I also like to see all the details of a life. Books and art and pots and records, oh my!
Charlie26- Totally agree re: comment from "b77"! Very irritating, AT...
@h144 - the wall lamps are Flos, they also come in black and hivemodern.com and similar sites should carry them
The cat (Indie) is a Bengal and positively unruly - she also naps on the dining table and does pretty much whatever she wants... she's taught me how to really exercise patience and is responsible for my obsessive cleaning habit :)
nice place, but really, I wasn't interested in the shoes.
I will let you know if I find that lamp in my search. Wonder if it could be replicated with a DIY? Thanks!
Very nice place, hope to see an update on your new loft.
But I hope that the new loft tour doesn't include vignettes of "stuff". I understand these show how people "live", but we need the bigger picture of layout and design.
I agree with the other posters about the deletion of comments. If someone is brave enough to open their homes to the site, they should be tough enough to receive our honest comments. Save that for the photographers' private web sites.
Nice place, I would love to see a floor plan.
Gotta say it: cats rule, and the photo of feline grandeur surveying the dining table is perfect.
Major kudos on the entire design, as you managed to bring Boston and NYC together beautifully,
Love this! Beautifully done.
Exceptional minimalism: the cat food and water dish placed beneath the wall painting. It is as if it is one piece of art. Only a cat owner would appreciate the aesthetic.
@Steve1ny
- why only a cat owner can appreciate the aesthetic? Would it be any difference there was a dog instead of a cat and the dishes were for the dog?
For those who freak out when seeing a cat on a kitchen counter... do you really think your cats don't walk all over your counters when you aren't home? You are deluding yourselves. Get over it, that's what cleaning products were made for.
@steve1ny - not true! I loved the minimalism in that photo even though I'm not a cat person at all! :)
Marina, definitely bookmarking this post for future inspiration!
Love your space and your kitty.
I agree with another poster, good luck keeping a cat off any surface. I have 5 cats and they rule the house, especially the tops of my kitchen cabinets.
As for the poster or threatened death to a cat on his/her counter -- people like you are the reason I am an animal activist!
What a perfect, perfect living space. Great job, impeccable taste on nearly everything.
Where did you get the LP cabinet in the photo? Really cool!
Yay for putting some praise about Boston! Thanks for sharing :) South End is a lot of fun.
@MarinaP thanks for the info on the carafes! :)
Love your apartment and like RockerJD, I'd really love to know more about your vinyl cabinet. I've never seen anything like that before - both stylish and practical. Gorgeous!
@rockerjd @shazzad - the cabinet is by MASHstudios and you can get it here - http://www.laxseries.com/live_and_relax/3X_shelf_with_base.html - also comes in a wall-mounted version; just note that the records only fit into the open middle section and not the side drawers (but large books do fit)
Lovely, relaxing space. So homey considering the urban locale. As for the kitty, my brother has a Bengal cat. "Louie" apparently is a reincarnated tight-rope walker. He hangs out on top of the thinnest photo frames, tops of doors, railings, pretty much anywhere he pleases. He also will push you out of a chair if he decides he'd rather have it himself. My brother and his wife gave up trying to keep him off of anything long ago. They now have bare walls and instruct their visitors to give Louie what he wants if they know what's good for them!
Lovely place and great choice of turntable - I have the exact same one in red :-)
But I'm a bit puzzled: where is your amp? Do the speakers have build-in amplifiers? I think I've seen an iPod directly plugged to one of them so maybe it's the case but most of those are only digital, you can't really plug in your turntable in them. They look like Audioengine speakers (?). If you come back here, please let me know what amp you're using, if any. Thanks!
Also, love the bench near the bed. And your cat is very handsome. Good luck with your move!
Wonderful to see a small space edited with beautiful things rather than a large space filled with cheap items. I appreciate many aspects of your place: (1) Made high end comfortable and accessible, (2) Successfully mixed textures and incorporated warmth with some choice wood accents, and (3) Filled the space at all levels (e.g., art on walls at varying heights) including the airspace with the Flos wall lamp (love) without cluttering. Well done. Tasteful. Timeless. A Jeff Koons Puppy Vase would look perfect in your apartment.
Love your beautiful, restful, colorful retreat in the city and your accessories (kitty, stereo system, photos, lamps, furniture). Very refreshing. Thanks for sharing.
@janetbrandt - I'm using audioengine 5 powered speakers - http://audioengineusa.com/Store/Audioengine-5 - the amp is built in as you have guessed but I'm using a pre-amp with the record player which makes a huge difference - http://www.dijitalfix.com/store/VP130.html - it's tiny and I keep it under the media cabinet. The guys at Digital Fix set me up with this system, it's great!
Lovely apartment, and I can't wait to see your next space.
As a fellow Bengal owner, I would really like to know what it's like to live with one in NYC and/or in a tiny apartment.
Beautiful! Love your sweet cat.
I love that first pic...the way the green in the art picks up the green in the large ginger jar. Nice touch! I find the flat tv is hung too high, though.
Marina, may I ask what paint color you used throughout the apartment? I'm looking for a warm but neutral shade of white. Thanks!
LPs. Cool. (What a relief, they aren't arranged by color.)
Marina,
I see the Thomas obrien influence, he is also my favorite designer, well done.
Per the liquor bottles, I feel you're pain about not having a place to hide them. We're not even big drinkers, but we've run out of storage space so our fully stocked bar is on the console table behind our couch, out for the world to see...and comment...
Reminds me of something I might have seen in my beloved Domino. And that's a HUGE compliment! Well done.
Hi there Marina!
You place is incredibly beautiful, thank you so much for sharing!
I was just wondering if you would be able to link me to where you purchased the tiger/zebra/camel/leopard/toucan pillows from?
Thanks so much.
Claire.
@clairelock - not sure where the zebra came from but all other ones are John Robshaw - he doesn't offer these exact designs anymore but has some similar ones here: http://www.johnrobshaw.com/products.htm?Pillows=Handpainted¶ms=3,13 - also check out the cool vintage pillows in the Souk section of the website
@creativelicense - the Domino book must be one of the first decorating books I ever bought and a great source of inspiration!
@bowmac - the walls came as is (as in "rental white"), it's a very clean and rather cool white, maybe like Benjamin Moore's decorator's white. For a warmer white, I'd go with BM's cloud white or Acadia white
@fengshuibyfishgirl - it's not a TV, it's a photograph :) I don't really like the look of TVs so haven't had one in over a decade but I have a projector (next to the green ginger jar), which projects a 100 inch diameter picture on the wall with the black and white photos - I just take them down when I'm watching a movie since the walls are super white (otherwise I'd use a pulldown screen) - it's an awesome set up!
Simply beautiful in every way.
What's not to love?! You have done a fabulous job with your home - it looks so good! I want to come over and hang out! :) I especially love all of the white, and how your books are all over the apartment, but they look so neat and tidy - and pretty! Love love love this - one of my fave tours ever!
Beautiful home. Beautiful kitty. I'm looking forward seeing your new loft.
So gorgeous! I like the interior design that you have shown of yours living room and kitchen. I am also looking to decorate my living room and kitchen this way. You have shared very wonderful ideas of home decor.
Love this!! LOVE IT! Any chance you or someone else could tell me about where you go the following from/what make they are:
Toucon cushion in the bedroom on the chair
Four framed prints in the living room arranged together
Two leather chairs (red), in the living room.
Thanking you all in advance :)
missjoanne - the links are below!
- cushions - from John Robshaw: http://www.johnrobshaw.com/products.htm?Pillows=Handpainted¶ms=3,13
- photographs - this is the artist's site: http://www.jbennettfitts.com/index.php - you can purchase his work through the Kopeikin Gallery in LA: http://kopeikingallery.com/pages/view/general-information
- chairs - from DWR: http://www.dwr.com/product/paulistano-armchair-frame.do?sortby=ourPicks
Lovely apartment. What color white are your walls? Am currently looking for the white right. Tortured.
Thanks!
Beautiful pictures of your beautiful apartment :)
Can I ask you the floor is it laminate or wood? I want to change the floor in my apartment ...
thnaks
The floors are light oak and the walls are probably BM's decorator's white or something very similar - they came with the rental but are the perfect shade of clean, slightly cool white that flatters art.
I'm a little late in seeing this tour, but I LOVE it!! One of my favorites in a long time. Could you please let me know where the raised pet food dish/feeder is from? It's awesome.
Love!
great place! do you know what the name of the rug is you got on overstock? thanks!
I'm also looking for the name of the rug from overstock! Can anyone help?
sorry about the late reply on the rug! it's a persian heriz rug - this is the actual one i got back in the day... http://www.overstock.com/Worldstock-Fair-Trade/Persian-Heriz-Peach-Ivory-Rug-54-x-69/3967589/product.html
As you can tell, the picture doesn't do justice to the actual piece, it's much prettier in real life and salmon colored. I did a search for heriz rugs on overstock and these two are very beautiful and somewhat similar although twice as big (and more expensive...)
http://www.overstock.com/Worldstock-Fair-Trade/Indo-Hand-knotted-Heriz-Ivory-Salmon-Wool-Rug-89-x-118/7495319/product.html
http://www.overstock.com/Worldstock-Fair-Trade/Persian-Hand-knotted-Heriz-Peach-Beige-Wool-Rug-86-x-115/7511181/product.html
thanks! i love the one you have best (out of stock of course)!
DWR licenses rights to iconic furniture designs and offers them at much less expensive prices than they would be if you found an original chair of that design. If you average out the cost for 20 years it averages out to $32.50 per year per chair. These are excellent quality chairs that will last a long time and not end up in the landfill. Many knock off versions of similar quality were created in the 1960's check out your 2nd hand shops for them expect to pay anywhere from $60 to $200 per chair. You will spend a lot of time looking.
