- What I Love About My Small Home:
- I love my big windows!! It definitely makes the apartment feel much bigger than it is. Not to mention, I get to overlook Governor's Island and the downtown Manhattan skyline -- not too shabby! I love to have friends over so I made sure to create a space for entertaining. Overall, I love how I feel when I walk home -- it's warm and inviting (great for a homebody like me!)
- Biggest Challenge of Living in a Small Space
- The biggest challenge was creating a living, eating, working and sleeping area all in one room while trying to make everything feel separate. Thinking vertically always helps in a small space. I installed two shelving systems for entertainment as well as my office space. The position of the furniture is key to creating separation of spaces. I also installed a string curtain to separate the sleeping area from the rest of the apartment. I love the string curtain over a solid curtain because it creates a divide without breaking up the space. It allows flow throughout the space, making it feel larger.

Lovely place -- it's stylish and liveable. Quite a achievement in a small space. Kudos! Wish we could see your view.
I really like how you divided your bedroom from the livingroom with that 'string' curtain and the lower bookshelf. Much better than those tall ones that take up so much visual space. So nice. Love your big windows too.
Very nice, it's clear you use every inch of space!!
I like that string curtain! where is it from?
Ok, in my book, your place is the winner!! I love the divider you are using!!
The string curtain is very cool. Nice setup.
Ditto on the curtain! It works so well for this space. Love the lighting as well!
Looks clean and functional for such a small space. Don't understand there are fewer likes
Thanks everyone! It's still a work in progress but I put lots of love into it!I wanted to post a picture of my view but didn't get enough picture entry slots : )
I actually got the string curtain on amazon-- just google nylon string curtain and you'll see how much is out there! I have it held up with a cable system from west elm. It's a great to divide a space- highly reccomend it.
Obviously I'm too late to be the first to say that I love the string curtain! But I do! But that's not all...also love the chandelier over the small island dining table. Is that hardwired into the ceiling? It's the perfect scale for the space and makes it feel like a real dining area. The whole place is designed very well...one of my favs! It's been said before but I'll say it again...winner, winner chicken dinner!
This is for sure a winner.
Great job in such a tiny place!!
Love it! (especially the string curtain)
Not too shabby indeed! This is what a studio is all about.
Excellent. Beautifully done! My favorite for sure!
love this space! where did you get the shelving units on the wall?? love them and am looking for something similar
This is by far my favorite! Nicely done. The other entries, while interesting, I don't think show your ingenuity in a *truly* small space (obviously "small" is a geographically relative term--only a non-New Yorker, I think, would ever consider that Seattle apartment small!). Anyway, you've done a lovely job of designating several living spaces that feel cozy and complete on their own but form a coherent whole.
Awesome use of space, and bonus points for the room outline!
What's not to like. Efficient. Cute. Clutter free. Maximized. And for the Big CIty, there is still a ton of space. Great job!
That curtain is incredible, as is your coffee table. Very nice.
I've lived in a lot of bitty apartments but never one with such a rockin' refrigerator. Counter-depth, too. Makes all the difference. Is it yours? Please don't tell me a landlord is that enlightened. Please do tell me the make and model. I need one and every one I see is so ugly.
PS: You made great use of your space.
Wow, big kitchen. Nice place!
This is such an adorable apartment! It's very "vintage nouveau" if that exists! Well done - this is my favorite for sure. :)
I love that bookshelf! Where did you get it?
Years ago my husband was stationed on Govenor's Island, such a beautiful place.
Love your apt too.
Hey guys! Thanks so much for your kind words and your votes! Just waned to pop in and answer some questions. Yes, I do rent --( wish i could afford to own) so not sure about my fridge model- sorry! My shelving units are actually from the container store--it's an elfa system. It's great because you can build your own and customize it based on your needs. Not sure if you can see in the pics but i have two shelving units one for entertainment and the other for office (tucked away on the wall between the two windows). The bottom shelf is big enough to act as a desk- which is great because it takes up much less room than an actual desk would. I think i answered everything but glad to answer anymore.
Wow, this has to be one of the most functional, beautiful studios I've ever seen. I'm in love with everything!! Could you tell me where that kitchen towel came from, I like the print?
Nice use of limited space. Very organized!!! Absolutely love it :)
Did the stove and refrigerator come with the unit or did you buy them? They seem pretty large for the space and I'm just wondering if you're a foodie and wanted larger appliances or whether the developers imagined a family of six would be moving in...
You are absolutely right about that string curtain - it allows for separation of your "bedroom" space without interrupting the flow of your home. Very well done! You've clearly put a lot of thought into your space.
a word I pretty much never use is stellar but wow. beautiful and stellar design. cool! I have hope for me. little hope but I am seeing amazingness at work here :)
Clever and great use of the space. You make it seem lager that it is, great ideas all the way around!!
Uh...why is this an underdog?
Nice! Very nice!!!
Hi...anyone have any idea where the lighting above the island (dining table) is from?
@ Skwame and others who have asked--I'm certain that the lighting above the island is a hanging candle-holder from CB2. I'm afraid they've discontinued it by now. I've got one over my small dining table, too.
I'd love to know where you purchased the curtain?
