Name: Mark Wynsma
Location: West Village — Manhattan, New York
Size: 475 square feet
Years lived in: 2 years — rent
Bright, colorful and filled to the brim with charm, Mark has transformed a standard run of the mill white walled rental into a vibrant home. From first glance into the entry way, it is clear that the home has been thoughtfully put together and showcases a love for design - and for color! One of the suggestions to renters I hear most frequently is to treat your rental like a home and put in the effort to make it yours. This home is a perfect example of that advice at work. From top to bottom, Mark has put in that effort and made this space warm and personal.
While the entry way is small in size, it makes a big impact with its bright walls, artwork and arrangement of lovely vintage vases and bowls. Strategic placement of a painting hides the fuse box from view. In this bright and colorful home, the vibe is chic, friendly and comfortable.
From the wall colors (chosen with confidence), to the selection and installation of the bathroom sink (done on his own late into the night just before his family was due to visit), to the knobs on his closet (repurposed sink knobs previously from a restaurant), the design of the space has been a labor of love on Mark's part. Given how it all came together so well, I was surprised when Mark told me that this was his first foray into home decor. Though he did admit that as a child, he managed to convince his parents into painting one of their previously white walls a vibrant red. This type of natural inclination towards color makes sense in someone who is now so adept at using paint to sculpt out visual space.
There are no window frames. I taped off two inches around each window and painted a white frame around them . . . it made a world of difference!
To hear Mark, pastry chef at Commerce Restaurant in the West Village, talk about the work he has put into his various home improvement projects - major (appliance installation) to minor (painting the hardware on the front door to better offset the red color) - calls to mind a quote from Charles Eames. "The details are not the details. They make the design."
Though all the rooms, are lovely and cheerful, the main room: an open kitchen and adjoining living room, is the place to be. Bowls filled with hand selected fresh fruits and vegetables are ready for eating. Open shelves display an eclectic array of dishes along side an arsenal of hanging pots and pans, a favorite being the vintage copper piece discovered in a Paris flea market. Between the open layout and personality on display, this a home perfect as a gathering place for friends.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
My Style: Urban Eclectic
Inspiration: New York City, specifically the West Village. I am always finding a new store, cafe, or restaurant while wandering around my neighborhood, it's ever changing. I draw inspiration from the majestic pre-war brownstones and the pops of color from their pots of flowers, window boxes, and brightly painted front doors. I regularly find myself going into clothing stores in the city not to check out the merchandise, but to look at how they have staged their space and am often jealous of the great vintage pieces of furniture they find! I also draw inspiration from my childhood. My mother has always been an avid gardener and has shown me how much life can be added by bringing the outdoors into a living space.
Favorite Element: It's the small things I appreciate the most about this apartment. I live in a corner apartment with 6 unobscured windows (the 7th faces another building, however I still get light through it) and two real bedrooms that both fit at least a full size bed with really good amount of closet space ( in terms of New York City standards). I have seen many apartments in the west village where most are not as functional as mine e.g. one bedroom is the size of a small walk in closet, railroad spaces (you have to walk through one bedroom to get to the other), a blocked view from the windows that directly face surrounding buildings, or having a huge electric meter in the middle of a wall (yes, the ones mounted on the side of most peoples houses) hanging out in the kitchen, hallway, or dining room.
Biggest Challenge: Making a very uninteresting "standard" apartment visually aesthetic without changing too much (because of the buildings regulations). When I moved in, it was your standard beige walls, no trim around the windows, no moldings or interesting wood work, budget oak kitchen cabinets, and a bathroom sink and mirror combo I hope they got a hell of a deal on.
What Friends Say: "Wow . . . great colors!" or "What are you doing baking? You should be an interior designer."
Biggest Embarrassment: By far, the bathroom door. The building's super did a bootleg job installing the previous bathroom sink and had to carve a little notch in the bathroom door so it would close without hitting the overhang of the sink. I carefully selected a sink I thought would clear the path of door, however, the measurements on the website where I bought the sink where a few inches off. The gap went from being about an inch in length to 5 inches in length.
Proudest DIY: Installing the bathroom sink with no clue about plumbing on a time restraint (I started at 2:00 am when my family from California and Michigan were flying in at 9:00 am) . . . yeah, that was a fun night.
Biggest Indulgence: Flowers . . . I really enjoy having fresh cut flowers around all year long.
Best Advice: Two pieces of advice: Don't work against the things you dislike about your space. . . find a way to use it to your advantage. And, color is your friend! The great thing about paint is that it can be painted over, so put all of the reservations aside . . . and just go for it!

Great colors. I love the articulation of the trim in all the rooms. Great kitchen. Great art.
The living room left me wanting more - maybe it was the color?
love the gnome above the kitchen cabinets! the green bedroom is dramatic but inviting.
I'm having a hard time seeing how 475 sq.ft. allows for three rooms (that is a guest room, right?). Excellent use of color, and the faux trim around the windows was a clever idea. It seems to open the place up.
I have a tip for small bathrooms and doors. Think about swinging the door out instead of in because chances are that you have more space outside the bathroom. I did this and everyone says the bathrooms look 10 times bigger.
Are you sure this apartment is 475 sq. feet? Even the kitchen could be expanded into a full galley, if desired. Nice space!
I really enjoyed this house tour. Thumbs up!
I want: the metal kitchen island, a slice of the cake and a latte or espresso from the coffee gadget in the kitchen.
Love the apt tour. My CIA graduated pastry chef sister can never seem to make enough to afford all these cool stuff you own, let alon an apt in NYC. What's the secret?
Mark, I've got to say that you home is pretty wonderful. Thanks for sharing.
Nice playful approach to color, and I am always amazed by all of the effort taken by a renter (as opposed to owner). I keep hearing over and over from designers that color should be used cohesively in a sinlge space, even when spread out over a bunch of rooms. I tend to lean more towards that approach.
Love your blue and white dishes and the use of color in the space. I never thought I would say this but I really like the green bedroom!
I love this apartment and feel motivated to perform some therapy in my house. That's what I look for in an AT house tour: Inspiration. Love the collection of rice bowls. Mark also looks fun. Since I've been caring for an injured tiny dog for 3 days and am exhausted, painting today is unlikely. But I think I'll make a cake in Mark's honor. Thanks for inviting us into your creative, beautiful yet unpretentious home.
Colorful and wonderful, especially the purple room and the kitchen. Great job!
Color confidence indeed!
Awesome! Are you sure this apartment is 475 sq. feet???
It would be awesome to see a floorplan!
Such an inviting home! Imo, your efforts at making a bland apartment into a beautiful one were a great success.
Love this apartment. Doesn't look to be 475 sq. feet.
Beautiful spot! I especially like the kitchen and your green bedroom walls. Where is that dreamy rug in the 2nd bedroom from?
WOW, I'm crazy about your home, Mark. The colors and furnishings and the kitchen -wow. I would not change a thing. I'll bet that coffee and cake at your place is fantastic.
I am once again surprised by how cheerful dark paint can be. Very very nice! You must love coming home to your beautiful nest.
beautiful and charming. i heart your taste and have total flat envy.
Wow—this is really, really great. I don't love the second bedroom (and how do you get a second bedroom into 475 square feet anyway?), but still really do love the confidence with color, and the balance between the bold and the subtle. Gorgeous work, Mark!
great apartment! love the colors and the mix and match of modern and old.
how much space do you have behind the table in the kitchen? doesn't seem like you cam even swing the fridge door open.
Although your apartment is amazing, I couldn't help but notice that cake--wish I could have a bite! I have the same timer from Anthro, although not sure if mine is working properly with the kiddos always playing with it. (Maybe that's why my cakes don't turn out like yours!)
Audacious, in a good way. Particularly love the green bedroom walls.
This is my first comment ever- that is how moved I felt to comment on this lovely tour! I'm dying to know about the art piece above the couch- is it in a glass frame, or does the art itself have a polymer glaze on it? I'd love to do something similar with some of my art around the house.
I really like the colors, artwork, and the cake.
@MONICAK - I'm wondering the same!
I don't think I've ever paused as long on photos in a house tour as with this one. I didn't want to miss anything. I often worry that we've got too many different color schemes (a new one for practically each room), and this home makes me think that's ok. I agree that the living room area is the one that isn't quite as put together, but it wouldn't take much to be as great as the rest of the place.
What an inspiring tour! I love the mix of styles and pops of color. Well done!
Great apartment and I love the use of color. I'm tempted to paint my bedroom Thyme Green, I'd feel like a flower surrounded by leaves. A Louis chair!! I have one in Salt too, isn't it great?
SteJeanne, I hope your tiny dog is ok.
What a beautiful home. The careful accessorizing and space planning make this place look WAY bigger than 475 sf. I love the kitchen island — a stylish solution that I'm sure doubles as a dining table.
I love the wall colors mingled with the white painted parts of the walls. This was well done. I live in a 395 sq ft apartment and have utilized all the available space I have. Pretty sure this must be a mistake and that this is more that 475sq ft. ;)
I love the modern, industrial and vintage pairings! I also really appreciate the combination of styles, which makes your home seem so personal and authentic. And I know we've all acknowledged this already, but I have to as well....beautiful use of color! Lastly, I really love how you utilized the small kitchen space! The pot rack over the windows, such a unique touch....and of course the beautifully worn prep table, love that 'lil number! Nicely done, thank you for sharing!
How on earth did you fit two bedrooms in a space under 500 sq ft? I love this place!
That purple wall is amazing. That is my favorite color and I cannot wait till I have my own home... I will have a purple room. And that cake looks so delicious. Thank you for sharing this post and the pictures :)
DreamDecor
Love it! This post made me realize I need to take more risks. Thanks for the inspiration!
Stunning! But I can't believe that this is on 475sq ft. Has to be a typo.
I absolutely love this place! The colours are confident and exciting without being garish - quite an achievement. Every item seems to have been selected with care, and yet the whole place looks relaxed and easy, suggesting an idyllic lifestyle. I'd move there in a heartbeat.
And I want to sink my entire head into that cake. Just sayin...
Adore the green bedroom.
Genius idea to mimic window frames.
@LGS - That's a burning question, believe me.
I could cook a cake that good if my place was more colourful.
;)
Lovely.
Love your home! So beautiful.
So freakin' awesome.
I love when AT finds these gems! This is what this site used to be like, or at least what has driven me to it. Places, large or small, where people really display their character.
Cuddos to your very skilled eye -- bold colors in a small space without letting it overwhelm the feel of the house, adding plant and food (organic elements), having a few large pieces and going to town with the little things (like the wonderful little bowls and dishes, and the cold/hot faucet handle detail in the foyer.) Thank you for sharing your special space!
I love the kitchen table, so old but artistic
Hi! Thank you all so much for the support and positive feedback on my home! It has been a labor of love to get it to where it is. To answer some of your questions and address some concerns (mainly about square footage) -yes, 475 square feet was an estimation by myself and my room mate who majored in interior architecture. I went through the apartment and measured the three main rooms tonight. It turns out that this place may be closer to 450 square feet! So here is how everything breaks down: my bedroom (the green one) is 10' x 9'6". My room mates room (the purple one) is 7.4" x 14'6"....both measurments include the closet space. The main area, including the bathroom, 2 pantrys, entry, living room, and kitchen measures 16' 6" x 14' 6". I plugged all of these numbers into a square footage calculator I found online and found that the total was about 440.55 square feet. To be fair, the apartment looks FAR bigger in the pictures than it does in real life with the help of wide angle lenses :-). I also think that defining different spaces through color also makes a space feel much bigger. As for the other questions....the second bedroom is my room mates room. I had a slight influence on how it looked, however, she did a lot herself. Unfortunately, she moved out 2 days after the photoshoot for AP, so now I am looking forward to my new room mate moving in! And for the people asking about her rug, it's by Angela Adams
Nice flat, proof that a guy's living space doesn't have to come in your standard black brown and, frankly, BORING...Well done, sir!
LOVE what you've done with the place! ...Especially the turquoise and brown combo :)
Perfection, that is all.
Can you share the source for the orange painting in the entryway? Love your apartment - the colours are fantastic!
My favourite element is the metal kitchen island - it easily doubles your storage and counter space. I am not so keen on the teeny tiny open shelves - they are a favourite on AT, but they look twee, and out of place in a working kitchen. Also, I can't believe you went to the expense and trouble of changing the sink in a rental. I hope the landlord chipped in!
a study in what paint can do. really impressive, gorgeous and interesting results. even though he says this is his first decor project, the crazed artistic-yet-detail-obsessed mind of a pastry chef can be seen at work here in the huge overall impact made possible by perfect small ideas all put together into one creative VOILA!
It would have been nice to "blur" the nude photo over the bed. Didn't really need to see that. Great place, otherwise.
DUDE!!!
Your home rocks. And you are one gutsy renter, with taste to match and awesome painting skills. The white edge around the windows is indeed, a stroke of genius. Love the off-center placement of the white swath and the deer horns in the bedroom.
And apparently baking too? Cool. The Renaissance Man. Good find, AT!
I have never been moved to comment on a house tour before, but this place is ... I just don't have the right words to express how fantastic this apartment is. The pics give off such a happy and adventurous vibe, I love everything about it. Bravo, Mark!
What a great kitchen - I love it! Thanks for the inspiration.
Wow, this is dreamy! I'm going to the paint shop now. Also appreciate Mark's carefree, whimsical attitude towards design and life in general. Very refreshing! Thanks for sharing :)
LOVE. Love the color and that kitchen in particular. Really love the pots hanging in the window. Works!
Bravo! Great use of color and space. I love the kitchen island and so much more. I really enjoyed your place.
I love all the color and that kitchen island is fabulous! I wish I could paint my boring white walls, it makes a boring place more exciting.
Quite possibly my favorite tour in a long time. Delightful and delicious is correct.
Love your use of color! Looks fun and inviting. Thx for sharing.
Another solution to that bathroom door situation is a bi-fold door. Tlhey are really inexpensive and essentially slide into place rather than swing. The new bath vanity is worth it I am sure, though :-).
If you ever need to supplement your income you could invite people over for coffee and cake — we'd pay. I figure you could fit us in six at a time.
something about a mac makes any room look modern
I don't think you'll have any trouble finding a roommate. What a great place!
BRAVO Mark! This is one of the few NYC apartments on AT that feels like a home! You've done a great job personalizing your place and making it feel lived in and welcome.

Thank you so much, this is my favorite tour ever. Love that it's a rental with 2 roommates living in such a small space, as opposed to all the Southern California houses owned by well-off people who systematically furnish their places with MCM. Not that these are bad in themselves, mind you, but they tend to be too stereotypical on AT. It's nice to finally see something different, and something so creative.
Love the colors and there are many amazing ideas. And yes, the cake looks fantastic. Congrats also to you because I know how extremely busy pastry chefs are, and it's a lot of work you've done in your fabulous apartment. It looks very inviting and warm, hope your next roommate will know how to appreciate it, and all the hard work you put into it.
Super yum!!!
Again, many thanks for all of the love! I wish I could comment on individual posts or send people a message (maybe, AT . . . if you see this, you should consider it!) To answer a few more questions: The print behind my couch is from YellowKorner in Soho. It is a digital print backed with aluminum. There is not glass over the print. The orangey liquid in the square vase with flowers was dyed that way naturally by the flowers (we had just cut them). I actually didn't even see it until Liana had finished up with the photo shoot because it was in my room mates room . . . weird, huh? And as for the orange painting, that is an original done by me in high school, haha, it's the only one I've kept over the years! Finally, as suggested by JUKESGRRL, I would love to meet anybody that lives in the NYC area who loves design as much as I do!
It makes me so happy that this post has brought inspiration to so many people, and thanks again for all of the great feedback!
Your apartment is great! I love the wall colors and use of stripes. Well done!
The sense of scale in this apartment is just perfect. Perfect.
Thanks for sharing your amazing style and creativity - you have totally made my day!
Really enjoyed the look into your home. Just great.
So, I have taken the tour and am in love. With your home, your style and your ability to feed me yummy things. We have never met Mark but you are my new BFF. Bring your adorable self to Boston. We shall shop, you will bake and I will make us a mean martini.
His home beautiful, charming and colorful, a true reflection of his personality. I have had the good fortune of being a friend of Markie for a while. I wish you all could come and hang out in the warmth of his design style. If there is one thing that this man has taught me it is that any project can be done at 3am. (It helps if he's around.) A true and tireless renaissance man that lives in full color.
And wow, can he throw a fourth of July party!
thanks jenn :)
L.O.V.E. your space! Thanks for sharing it. Feel inspired and uplifted looking at it.
Will you do a floor plan? Would help a lot.
Thanks!
Thanks so much for sharing..A perfect example of eclectic at it's best..Your sense of color, scale and balance are excellent..You definitely could moonlight as a designer!!
@Jukesgrrl:lol! Count me in! Delightful is right, Mark! This is near perfection. What a lovely home you have curated!
You are such a natural at decorating! I love your metal kitchen Island and just want to come eat a piece of that cake and drink a latte in that little vintage mug and be your new friend (and neighbor!). Oh, and my best friend is obsessing (in a good, artist way) about teal and burnt orange for her kitchen right now so i promptly forwarded her this link. Turquoise and orange work so well. You make me want to put a bit more effort into my own place...
WOW!!!!!!!!!! Fabulous all around. This guy really needs to be an interior designer ~ this is one of the best tours ever. Love it. LOVE the kitchen!
Loved the COLORS and all the small, unique finishing touches!! Would love to get some decorating ideas from him for my "bare" looking condo!
You killed me with the yellow rug- bang, I'm dead! I think for the size of home you have, you made every room and piece of furniture count- Great Job! I love the thought of the "island"..you created more space in the kitchen...just a great job all the way around.
If I have said it twice, I have said it 20 times, people with small spaces are so creative and I know you have to be since you have small space, but some of the ideas here on AT...I have incorporated them into my home...all of yall rock!
Your apartment is both humble and refined. Great colors, great art, great job hanging the art. Love the green bedroom. And I liked the orange painting a lot, but it's even cooler now that I know you did it yourself. Your home looks like you really live in it, from making cakes to hanging out. That's the finishing touch so many hyper decorated spaces lack - the lived in and loved vibe.
Mark, your home is phenomenal! Love, love, love! There are so many gorgeous, fun elements. Bravo to you on creating such a beautiful home!
Great colors. Love the purple and yellow!
Mark, your home looks so friendly, sunny and inviting. I`ve been living in
490 sq. ft. myself, but never thought that it could be such generous. Love all the colors you used...
Sorry for my poor english.... warm greetings from germany!
Mark,
What is the brand and color of the purple paint in the second bedroom? I really love it.
@shopgirlny, The color I believe is "purple rain" by Benjamin Moore, although I can't be certain. I helped my room mate pick it out a long time ago and she has since moved out and the wall has been painted another color by another room mate, lol.
mark! thank you for your comment on my house tour and i have to say that i absolutely love your space! i remember seeing it when it was first posted and i want so many of your things! and i would kill for your "island"! it's so wonderful, i'm so jealous!
I'm blown away!! Gorgeous use of color.. Your first project? Amazing... And I need a piece of that cake :))))))
Wow... Looking again... And again :) Love that purple paint. Where did you get that metal island in the kitchen? You are massively talented!!!
Can someone tell e te source of the rug in the bedroom ?
Mark, Oh Mark...question: I noticed the white wall left unpainted at the corner of your bed. BRILLIANT. I studied it forever and realized it makes the space seem open and bigger bc that back wall doesn't 'end' but that it's from the CORNER going both ways.. Is this a trick? Because my bed is in the same space and I think I will do that. LOVE LOVE LOVE everything. I never say that. Love the kitchen and write back for my address to FedEx me that cake. !!!!
thanks so much! The kitchen island was a very lucky ebay find . . . it took me about a year to find something the right size, price, and that was functional enough to be used a lot.
yellow rug = angela adams
Thanks so much for all of the love! The only reason I left that corner white was because I thought if I had painted the whole room green, it would have been too much. And since my headboard is really short, I wanted to draw attention to it . . . plus the wooden deer I have mounted above my bed wouldn't pop against green. So it was kind of just an obvious solution, lol. And if you happen to live in the NYC area, I won't need to fed ex cake to you . . . you can get it at the restaurant!
Wow. This is an awesome little space. Well done.
Can you tell me where you got the sink?
And the model?
What about the living room rug? The gray one... it and your place are fantastic.
I love it. Makes me regret the similarly sized apartments I lived in during my 4 years in NYC, never making the most of the space or making them "home." I'd love to live here.
I'm in a rental now with a long narrow entryway, that I consider my "embarrassing problem space." Your console table would be perfect there! Can you share the source? And I assume the tall white things are candles or lamps? I'm curious about them as well, since there is no outlet in my entryway.
the sink is from IKEA, believe it or not . . . the cabinet was a bitch to put together but I think it was well worth it. It has held up quite nicely over the past two years. The basin is called "braviken", and the cabinet is called "godmorgan".
The grey rug was bought years ago for my very first apartment from Pier 1.
The console table is from Room & Board . . . here is the link:
http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/product/detail.do?productGroup=3193&catalog=filter&menuCatalog=room&menuCategory=201&menuSubcategory=144
And the "tall white things" are actually vases from Crate & Barrel. I would probably have a lamp there, however I also do not have an outlet in my entryway.
I f-king LOVE this tour!! I've re I sited it several times since it first appeared and am now only commenting. Colorful place for a colorful life!
