Name: Mark Fugarino
Location: Larchmont, New York
I am a graphic designer living in the NYC area. I moved from San Diego in 2000. Hard to believe I was living in a one-thousand-square-foot apartment for $550 a month — what a deal! Even if it was a light run down, at least it was really close to downtown.
Eight years ago my heart was set on purchasing an apartment. I knew I couldn't afford a closet in NYC, so I decided on Westchester. I looked at a few different neighborhoods here, but the main need was to be near to a train station so travel into the city would be easy.
Of course at the time, the market was hot; not so much these days. I looked at thirty-five apartments. A couple offers were met with multiple-bids I lost out to. Finally I found a place in Larchmont. The village was charming, and with a French school here some mornings at the train station gave the impression of living in a Parisian 'burb. Anyway, the apartment had much of my wish list checked. The condition of the apartment was not so hot. It had good bones though. But, I looked past the hideously stained blue shag carpet and the chipped paint.
I was willing to put in the sweat equity. I spent endless hours stripping the paint off of all the radiator covers and the door frames. New baseboards. Wood blinds throughout since I hate curtains of any kind. Fresh paint top-to-bottom. And the blue shag carpet — gone.
I almost fell completely into the mid-century trap. I love it. But it dawned on me after seeing so many photos of homes head-to-toe "themed" mid-century that it would be better just using key pieces. I like other styles as well: ultra-modern and even antiques. So I'm in the mix. Completely eclectic; which really can evolve over time without becoming dated. That's the goal, at least.
Thanks Mark!

nice modern looking carpet!
Looks nice, you've struck the right balance of contemporary and mid-century. I hate the unmade bed thing, it's as stagey as casually tossed shoes on the floor, dress on hanger hanging from the closet door thing.
I love the moon print above your bed! Was it purchased somewhere, or a found-in-a-magazine thing?
Loved the Winged Victory!
Nice collection of things. Larchmont is a charming place to live; so many New Yorkers know so little about Westchester County. Would you ever consider painting the kitchen cabinets?
Love the Winged Victory. It is my favorite piece of sculpture.
I love your bed! Can you tell me where it's from?
Very cool place!
I also have a small, narrow kitchen, and I love what you've done with yours. The color is great.
impressive
Thanks for the comments folks... I missed the posting.
The moonwalk art was made by tiling iron-on transfers to fabric. It was my ode to what I consider the most magnificent dream: realized.
The bed is from Room&Board: Lowery in Walnut. It was discontinued when I bought it. But they were nice enough to track one down. They always have great service.
I did plan on painting the kitchen cabinets when I moved in, however I chickened out because I knew there would be no turning back. Since I have quite a bit of grey throughout the apt, I thought best to keep the warm wood tones.
Definitely, I'm obsessed with the Winged Victory.
Oh, I normally make my bed daily; something struck me that day about the flow of the unmade covers. So I actually ended up photographing the whole apt.
Where are those aluminum (I think?) chairs from?
Aluminum chairs were from White Furniture I believe in Tribeca several years ago. Really affordable I recall.
Hey Mark - I just moved from NYC to Italy where my husband and I are fighting over what the duvet should look like... but we both love your striped one! Could you divulge the brand/where you got it?
The Duvet: Crate&Barrel - Riley Green F/Q Duvet Cover SKU 549-366
