I believe that my apartment offers a different approach to modern living space. Even though the space is only 350 square feet, it houses an open kitchen, sleeping area, work area, bathroom, living room and large storage space. White walls and floors and minimal furnishings make space look lighter. The concept of lifting up storage space and bookshelves creates illusion of a larger and uncluttered volume.
Thanks Marta!

White Enamel Flatwa...
Really, really darling! The space looks so airy & refreshing!
Debbie
Love it!
Nice space!
Could you share your source for the mounted storage solution? Looks like Ikea, but interested in the specific product name. Thanks!
Nice but looks too cool. Here in Italy most people paint their walls white so I don't find it "daring" - I prefer colors, they give more personality and warmth to a home.
I'm impressed with the lack of "stuff" here! Wow. The raised storage space is great - it keeps the place feeling open.
love it... I love it when I see spaces that are really small - it gives me hope and inspiration for my small space! Thanks!
I really like the storage up top - it's not obtrusive and it doesn't have any footprint at all, so it doesn't clutter up the small space.
Bella! White is a personality choice! Were the floors painted or did you just go for it. I love it.
I'd probably even get rid of the bed and do just a couch/sleep piece. But your choices are spot on.
And the art is well suited for this space.
And the desk looks very Fronzoni!
So strange how an all-white space @ 350 sq ft looks smaller than the crazy bold color space recently posted @ 280 sq ft. Is it the mirrors in the other place, do you think? I find myself wishing this space had warm wood flooring.
I like it the storage up top, but it does sort of make the ceiling look incredibly low. The whole space also looks smaller somehow than 350 sq ft. Maybe I'm getting that feeling due to the recent tiny apartments that look way bigger.
wow, really well done! For a NY apt, you make the space look HUGE. bravo!
While I really like the clever use of cabinetry up above, and it does appear that the space functions very well, It does actually look a bit smaller than the square footage given, which goes to show that bathing a space in white won't necessarily give the illusion of more space. That said, I really do like the place. It actually looks quite charming and cozy. I envy the little kitchen area!
I'm curious about how you did the white floors too - it's so tricky painting floors in a rental!
I did a post on how to achieve a budget white bedroom on my blog...http://bit.ly/e93s0K
There are so many things that I like about the apartment - and I am a huge fan of white - however, I feel that having so much lined up on the walls on either side of the apartment doesn't quite work. For instance, a subtle, see-through divider between the kitchen and desk would help break up that feel. Also, re-working the sofa, chair/table at the end of the room so it's not all shoved against the wall (if that's possible - I know there is not a lot of room to work with) could make the room feel less boxy. Last, and this is just a personal preference, floor to ceiling sheer window panels or curtains would do wonders to soften the look of the whole room - as would more textures in white on white from just a very few pillows and other accessories (candles, vases, sculptural pieces). AND, I love the shiny lamp over the bed -- maybe more mirrors or mirrored items? Is there another apartment in your building?!
Finally, a studio apartment that isn't crammed to the ceiling with stuff. Nice job!
it's nice and clean. i like the comments by citipearl about "floor to ceiling sheer window panels or curtains" to soften the look of the space and "see-through divider between the kitchen and desk" the break up the space visually. i like it so white but that black chair isn't working for me, not because it's black but maybe the tall back makes the room look smaller. it needs more breathing space above it.
Quite lovely!
I suspect it looks "small" due to the shape. It appears to be narrow, long room. A room closer to square would appear larger. I don't think the decorator can do much about that. :)
This is one of my favorite places featured on AT. The white is beautiful and your lack of clutter is amazing. I am really impressed that you have a couch which looks to be a double sleeper as well and also a single bed. I would HATE to turn my couch into a bed everynight. I am so glad you decided to separate living and sleeping. The glass table by the chair is a brilliant way of keeping the space open and airy.
Beautiful space! It's amazing how little they can live with- I'm impressed!
The up storage is quite smart. Any chance you care to share the source of the fun clock on your wall?
Kris Schindler - Big Calendar Flip Clock
Overall, a great and refreshing use of space. I lived in a small studio like this during university, and was amazed at how efficient it can be. The artwork on the walls, and the punctuation of the black chair and bench really help this room not feel like a sterile psych ward or prison cell. But I feel like this room could be tweaked slightly with furniture placement so that it doesn't feel like a train car with everything lined up along the walls.
I love white walls and floor, but I think the overhead storage looks akward because it leads the eye to the unappealing windows. I suggest wall to wall drapes to unify the space.
What a perfect space! You've done a fabulous job. I am jealous of your white floors.
I think it is a very functional space...and one I would enjoy because I like openness .. however, it does remind me of an airplane or another form of mass transit with overhead compartments.
@dirce79
As much as I liked it, this in no way looks smaller than the other space; you are joking. Also, the other space was fragmented (not a studio). The living room with the blue sofa and the little kidney-shaped flokati? That is the entire room. The bedroom with the wall of closet and the bed and desk? That is the entire room. That you can't see the whole apartment in one shot might make you imagine that it is more spacious, but there's nothing more there. Speaking of that, thanks for the full-space shot, everything makes actual sense that way. I guess there's no need for a tour, but too bad you couldn't sneak in one more shot for the bathroom. XD I'm assuming that's behind the mirrored door. Do you have any closet space at all?
... wait, where is the fridge? And kitchen sink? Do they exist???
Thank you for the full-space photo! How I wish other posters would do the same. I really don't get much out of seeing six photos of a vase and a book.
Again,thanks!
I like the slightly retro-futuristic sci-fi vibe to this place. Very cool.
Thanks @Aaron Able. I just wish it weren't so darn expensive!
There is not one inch of this space that isn't positively brilliant.
I could be really, really happy here.......
Looks like a dorm room. A nicely decorated, clean dorm room.
cute space for youngster
I'd position the rug further back into the space to expand the LR area. I would have the bed on the diagonal,as a daybead, near the left window, with a large plant behind it to fill in the empty space,or the black bench as a table,to hold a clock, lamp, etc. The couch with its back to the kitchen, the black chair next to it,and the desk where the table is now.Putting the table in the kitchen would make it an eat in kitchen, rather than sleeping in it.
The bed across from the stove reminds me of my first "apartment" which was a room in a "boarding house" It was basically a kitchen with a bed thrown in, but I was only 18 then! It still gives me nightmares, its probably the reason I'm not happy looking into the kitchen no matter how small the space is. I would even suggest a couple of room dividers that let thru the light, but create a separation between living and sleeping areas. And where do you store your hanging clothes?
I love it. I think your space shows what you can do in a small space and storage is key when dealing with a small space. Good job!
Clearly very well thought out, if not my personal style.
However I don't think cabinets high on the walls like this make a space look bigger, in fact I think they make it look smaller because the room seems to curve in on itself right at about eye level. A better space-expanding option is a row of cabinets up to about waist height, so that the room is visually wider above that level. And of course mirrors also help!
Looks like a hospital room....
The raised storage is great. I like the white, but I think some colour and pattern, especially in the bed area, would also look good and might make it look bigger.
very nicely done!
I like the seating choices! The "all white" style isn't really my thing, though. I need a tad more colour in the walls, flooring, storage, bed, drapes...
@ lepidoptery
I looked back at the other tour, and I think you are right about it being the closeup-ness of the other photos. Regardless, I lived for two years in 380 sq ft, and though it was only 30 sq ft larger, it really seemed to be twice as big as this space looks in the pictures. I think perhaps the upper storage units are the culprit.
Love it, love it, love it! I live in 360 sq ft, but your place looks bigger! Great job.
Wish I could have seen the bathroom..and where in the heck are your clothes and shoes?
Impressive. It would be nice to see a few pops of color in the form of an accessory or two but you have done a fantastic job of editing.
I love the wingback-styled chair!
There is a ton of comments about the shelving up top but I think it was actually brillant. As someone who loves small spaces, likes a "nothing out" look but has a lot of books and handbags, creative storage solutions are the key. Martha has given herself so much storage without giving up valuable floor space. I also don't like beds too close to the kitchen & would like to see the bed moved up under the window. Then, maybe the couch placed in front of the bed. Move the desk where the bed is & the table/chair next to the kitchen.
But I do see the radiator by the window which probably contributed to the layout you have now. I'm so glad we don't have to deal with those things in Hawaii!! There was a really great slide show on ny times' website a few months ago where she made a cool eating area where her radiator was including a bench over it. She also had a tiny uncluttered & modern white space, which was beautifully done.
Nice design! Great way to utilize the space!
yup, agree with dirce79 and Jose A.
I also agree with dirce79, Jose A and idon'tdobeige. Chris's 280 sq feet seemed larger. Maybe because his ceilings were much taller and everything wasn't in one room. While I do appreciate how simple this space is, it feels more like a Pied-à-terre.
I think this is one of those great examples about how design depends so much on personal taste. But, I would have to agree with some comments that this looks much tighter than Chris' recently posted 280sf space. It was also a narrow space, and did include a long encompassing shot, but still felt bigger somehow?
Can the OP identify the type of cabinetry storage used in the photos?
Nice use of vertical storage space. I also like that, even though it's mostly white, it doesn't look sterile and cold.
@dirce79
It looks non-huge as a room in the last photo, but I kind of imagine it would come off differently in person... though I'm sure you're right that the high shelving does narrow the ceiling a bit. Since the high shelving is the highlight of the space, I want to say that while I admire the lack of casegoods, I sincerely hope there's a walk-in closet or something for your clothes and things because I would also hate having to reach overhead for things all the time. I'm not in an earthquake-prone area at all, but I suspect I would also have nightmares about the cabs crushing me while I am in bed. XD
This is hands down one of my favorite studio apartment setups thus far. I love that the bench at the end of the bed doubles as two kinds of seating, and also helps divide the space.
I'm a "color" person so I personally would add more pops of color, but I am fully aware that is not everyone's style.
looks a little cold. Could use a little color :)
I also love white but this is over the top.My first thought "antiseptic." Needs color, to personalize and identify you the owner. Somewhere the color should be. Maybe one wall -I don't like the shag rug or the color. Otherwise it's very nice for a single career person in NYC. Monotone.
Marta
Very, very good job! Congratulations
I've never thought that 4 rooms in 1 could look so natural and uncluttered. I think you did an amazing job with the space you had.
