The iPad is the picture of reduction. Edited down to singular simplicity, it would be a shame to muck up this ideal visual efficiency with the case equivalent of an Ed Hardy t-shirt. Which is why magnets are so perfect: nothing extra. Here are some of our favorite minimal iPad accoutrements.
Magnus ($49.95) (shown at top)
MacAlly MagStand2 ($39.99)
The Magnus fits right in with everything Apple (aka, it's aluminum and simplified). It's hand finished (meaning your order might take a little while) with magnets in the supportive strip and rubber feet on the bottom to prevent slippage. Even though you can't see it from the front it's still got a strong grip on your tablet. We like how well it blends in with our keyboard. And trackpad. And monitor. Well, you get the idea.
The MacAlly is a tabletop stand you can also attach to a cabinet for kitchen or bathroom use. The iPad slips in and sticks using the strong magnets inside. When the stand is on the ground a foot comes out for stability. We like the go-anywhere ability of the MagStand and its crisp finish.
Apple Smart Cover ($69.90)
Of course Apple understands the magic of magnets, which is why their cover is outfitted with them. From covering the screen to acting as a stand the Smart Cover does its job pretty well. That minimalism doesn't provide quite the stability that other stands do, but it's doing double duty. Our only other qualm is the price: $70 is pretty steep for something that simple. If you do plenty of traveling with your iPad the Smart Cover is still a strong contender.
