When it comes to color, most of us think in solids. Maybe, maybe, maybe we'll bring in one pattern, maybe two, in a feeble attempt at pattern mixing 101. And then there are people who can randomly mix patterns -- this tiny floral with that Hawaiian print with that plaid -- all in the same room, even on the same piece of furniture...and it works.
Tif, over at the blog Dottie Angel, is one of those people. Her seemly random mixes of color and pattern never feel garish or jarring. Here's a glimpse into her wonderful home, which she's affectionately nicknamed Mossy Shed.
A mixture of vintage, thrift and Craigslist finds, what keeps her home grounded is a background of white walls and furniture with simple, strong shapes. Patterns and color are used as accessories, whether in a chair cushion, in lieu of the glass in a wardrobe or in wonderful pillows. And, things are not as random as they seem. The flowers on the bedrooms pillows pick up the flowers in the prints on the wall both in pattern and in color; the red of the chair cushions repeat in the red of the vase and the slightly Asian feel of the curtains finds its echo in the pink of the chairs back cushion.
She's always tinkering with the space, decluttering and rearranging, weeding out what doesn't work. This has the added benefit of assuring that her home is always surprising, always new. And she's not afraid to let her inner child express itself, whether it's the birds on her dining room walls, the mobile in her living room or the jolt of turquoise in the china cabinet. Adorable! I want to see more of the kitchen.
I love this. I can't imagine it in the night-time, though, or in the winter-time. That, more than a "fear" of mixing patterns, is one reason I rarely do. But I love this, anyway. :-)
Love! I like mixing patterns but this has inspired me to do it more :)
Cute! Cute! Cute! House tour PLEASE! I love all your colour and fabric choices!
So girly and pretty. Perfect mix of Anthropoligie and Danish Modern.
It's a great photograph. I've tried this before, but somehow it looks a lot more shabby in my space. Why does this photo not look shabby????
love it! its so insanely beautiful...
this place is great. everything fits perfect.
Must. Move. In.
It works so well because she uses pastel colours for all her prints.
Where are the orange flower print curtains from? LOVE them. I've been having a hard time finding fun curtains for my house...
So adorable and inviting!
