- What I Love About My Small Home:
- I kept the walls and most of the furniture neutral or white, giving me the perfect blank canvas to play around with color and pattern. I love the vibrant playful pops of color throughout my apartment!
- Biggest Challenge of Living in a Small Space
- I'm a grad student on a tight budget, so decorating my apartment was a real test of patience.I had to stalk and wait till things went on sale or find cheaper substitutes to all the items I coveted. Storage is also a constant challenge, so all big furniture items have drawers to provide ample storage space.

- where is the couch from?
- did you miss uploading the bedroom photo - there are 2 photos for the living room :(
You must tell us your secret. How does a grad student afford an apartment like that in NYC? I'm very impressed!
@ TINOS: Some people have a lot of money, and at 652 sqft in NYC it is apparent that she/he does, or is really good at waiting til something goes on sale........liket his place. I can't even imagine your view, just a lil jealous. Please tell me why your TV is so small. You have a lot of space to work with, it throws off the scale of everything else. Or is it just me?
I, too, would have liked to see the bedroom, but I like everything else a lot. And as for the TV comment, some people don't spend much time watching TV. I personally spend maybe 2 hours a month watching a movie on my TV, so why would I invest in a big TV that is going to never get used?
Please! Don't stack your books like that, unless you want to ruin them. As a rare book librarian, this makes my eyes twitch. Otherwise, nice place!
This is so damn perfect! I totally love it, your desk is TO DIE! and so is your living room... it reminds me a little bit of a clockwork orange.
I'm bummed that two pictures of the living room are almost identical, because I would've loved to see the bedroom in this beautiful place! Otherwise, I love everything about this. Great use of color and space.
nice place, and so spacious! @Petitesuissesse, there are bookshelves that appear as if the books are floating. CB2 has one, if you wanted to take a look. I'm assuming that that's what is being used here? Don't worry! Someone who has that many books probably takes care of them :)
Love the kitchen!
Where did you get that rug in your living room? I love it! You have a great place!
Okay..yet again, I agree with owlgirlO...I am not judging or at least hope that I am not ....When I looked at the pictures, I thought nice apt...why small tv???...BUT then I thought.. a bigger tv may not be on her wish list nor in her budget..she opted for a degree..That was a better purchase...Good Girl!
The couch is definitely IKEA. You can tell by the legs.
It looks great, but I think a slightly bigger rug would pull it all together nicely!
You have the coolest lamps! Nice space but I too would like to see the bedroom.
Where's the bedroom?
I would also like to know where the rug is from! And the yellow lamp on your desk? The mix of patterns and colors in your space is really lovely. Love the cat lounging on the countertop!
Hi everyone! Thank you so much for all the nice comments - it has made my day!!!
Actually, the desk is in our bedroom....I couldn't get the best shot of our room though (only thing I didn't show was our dresser and bed), so left it out.
@srivi, @AzureSong is right, the couch is from Ikea. We just moved into this bigger space, so it's our old Karlstad loveseat paired with a Karlstad chaise.
@tinos, I guess I didn't make it clear in my entry, but I don't live in this space alone. I share the apartment with my boyfriend (who is not a grad student) and two fat and happy cats. Also, location, location, location....we definitely don't live in the most desirable part of town. Pretty far north actually!
@OwlgirlO, the view is nothing exciting! We look into other people's apartments. The windows do let in nice sunlight though.
@mskarilynn, thanks for your comment, yes, we don't spend that much time watching TV, but a big TV just also wasn't in my budget.
@petitesuissesse, @summerkitten was right. It's a vertical bookshelf. We got ours from overstock. It's a great space saver!
@shoffelt, our living room rug is from Home Decorators Collection. Here is the link: http://www.homedecorators.com/P/Castleberry_Area_Rug/510/. Sign up for their emails - we got ours @ 20% off + free shipping, so it was worth it to wait!
@ Shanooshi, totally agree and ideally that's what I would have gotten, but the next size up was out of our budget, it was almost double what we paid, despite the discount.
@wendym1, haha, thank you!
@ Sgt. Pepper, thank you! I bought the yellow lamp several years ago at a boutique that was going out of business, so sad for them, but that meant I got it at a great price!
Nice use of colors, but would have liked to also see a photo of bedroom and bathroom to get a complete overview.
LOVE.
I love your space, espeically that yellow lamp! Would love to know where you got it!
Love the space. I think the small TV allows the art work to take center stage. I love the art you chose. Are they posters? Would love to know where you got them. All the pops of color are fantastic. You got it just right. Great job!
I love the colors, LOVE the lamps, and heck you even went with a green Kitchenaid! It looks awesome, and the budget furniture (Ikea and Overstock shopper over here, too) works well since you've added your own touches.
I think your cat wants dinner, btw.
no bedroom?
Love the lamp!
Awesome job Masha. Between the color and eclectic decor choices, there is alot to stimulate my eyes.
@Tracy333, thank you! I bought the yellow lamp several years ago at a small boutique.
@dusty3863, thanks! Yes, they are posters. I got them from allposters.com. The frames are from Ikea.
Thanks @ProfKD, the green actually wasn't my first choice, but it was the only discounted color at the time....I've really grown to love it though. Haha, our cat was already fed at that point...just asking for seconds, as usual!
And thank you everyone for all the kind comments!
Totally love your space. Neutral color background with spashes of color in your accessories. The rug totally makes that room! Love the green paisley lamp!! The cabinet the tv is on; are those converted lockers?? Where id you get that? So cool!
@TrishH, thanks! They are Ikea PS metal cabinet/lockers. I think they also come in red.
Great place. That yellow lamp is insane! I'm going to be looking out for one just like it. I disagree with those who posted about the small size of the TV. I went for years without one at all. People don't move to NYC to sit at home and watch TV.
And thanks for taking the time to comment and answer everyone's questions...you rock girl...have a great one!
I've wanted that Kenneth Wingard lamp for years!! Here is a link for everyone who loves it...

I am loving your style! Where is your desk from?! It looks like a way more space efficient version of one that I have been drooling over.
Where is the adorable green desk chair from?
Where did you get the desk from? I'm looking for something similar!
Love that picture of the beach. Would you have a link to it on allposters.com? Been searching in vain. Thanks!
Yes, please tell us about your desk! It looks almost like a creative use of IKEA Lack pieces.
Thanks!
Is the desk an expedit somehow recycled?
I guess we're not getting our answer @masha84
For those wondering about the desk it's the 2 x 2 Console desk from West Elm

I apologize for the late response! I didn't realize our page got additional comments.
The green chair is from Walmart - they have a ton of fun colors.
The desk is from Kmart or Walmart, I can't remember exactly which one anymore, but it came in a darker espresso finish as well. The orange boxes are from Ikea.
The beach print is from this Etsy seller here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/SevenElevenStudios?page=1
The framed pieces above the TV are all from allposter.com. All frames are from Ikea.
Thanks again everyone!
