Earlier today in our weekly Green Architect column, Rachel told us about the importance of controlling humidity levels at home. Unfortunately, it's kind of a bummer that so many humidifiers are plastic eye sores. Then we found Mast, a gorgeous passive humidifier made with pure Hinoki (Japanese Cypress). The thinly sliced rot-resistant Hinoki mast absorbs water from the hull and diffuses the room with its intrinsic, lemony scent—all without electricity, of course.
Mast was designed by Shin Okada and crafted by Masuya Koubou. We don't think it's available in the States yet, but you can purchase it here for 6,300 Japanese Yen, or about $70 USD.
We just can't get over how beautiful it is.

No way! I want this! It's a totally reasonable price, too. I wonder how well it works.
Wow. This would look fantastic in with orchids, too. They love extra humidity if they're in a home.
puella,
This was posted on unplggd. They said "Compared to a glass of water, The Mast offers about six times the speed of evaporation."
RedCat--Thanks for the link. I'm going to click in a second. Now I'm wondering, since I don't know how fast an electric humidifier evaporates the liquid, how it works in comparison. I suppose it would be a different scenario since I only run a humidifier at night, and often just when I have a sick kiddo whereas you could just keep this thing filled all the time.
puella,
The only information I found was here. She said that one glass of water did nothing for her, but noticed a difference with a pail of water. I'm not sure how large the pail was or size of the room. Since it is a Japanese invention it probably works well in really small rooms as the Japanese tend small living spaces. So you might need a couple for them to work well.
Its gorgeous but it does look small.
