Q: This table was one of my very first pieces of adult furniture. I didn't want to buy the chairs that were paired with it because it all seemed too match-y and I always thought I'd run into the perfect chairs sooner or later. Fast forward 4 years and still I still haven't found my dream chairs!
In the meantime, I've been using the uberly uncomfortable and boring Ikea Stefan chairs, but they are falling apart. I would describe my style as a blend of ethnic and contemporary, so I don't want anything too rustic. Also, I cook and entertain a lot, so something that won't make my ass go numb after a bottle of wine. Any suggestions out there from people with similar tastes?

I don't have a brilliant suggestion for you, but there's a blog called Chair Whore that has a lot of things that aren't the Ikea/DWR beaten path:

I'd buy thrift store/garage sale one at a time and mix them. If you keep the same weight or tone they should be cool.
I'd like to know what the rest of your home's style is.
Hard to pick chairs when the table is the only thing to go on.
I love the West Elm Curved Upholstered chairs. They're unbelievably comfortable.

Perhaps the La Marie chair by Starck for Kartell in crystal clear. Or the Victoria ghost chair by Stark again in crystal clear. Either would allow the table to be the star.

i like modern and my first inclination was to do a mix of mid century classics with it - if the scale of the table is normal i.e. not restoration hardware ginomous sized.
if that's not your thing i would just do simple upholstered parsons chairs, maybe have the ones at the head of table be a different color than the rest. i've also seen chunky wicker/reed backed parson chairs (with regular upholstered seat cushions) that also might look great with the table.
the table is pretty ornate, so the parsons chairs would keep the focus on the details/trim of the table.
Ooh, I have a very similar table and have been thinking about the perfect chairs too! Right now we have a set of upholstered Parsons chairs that look alright and are comfortable for long lingering dinners, but my dream chairs would be the Louis Ghost Chair by Philippe Starck for Kartell.
I have a similar type table and bought leather upholstered parson chairs...we get lots of compliments on the look, they're pretty comfy and no one has complained of numb bums yet!
I agree with the curved upholstered west elm chairs, or something like them. They are sleek and elegant and comfortable. What about benches with backs? They could also be sleek and elegant and convenient after a bottle. . .
I agree with the Ghost chair suggestion. would look fabulous!
I'm with zoee. Totally depends on the room.
But based on your wine/ass need, I'd narrow the search to upholstered seats.
The chairs, not yours.
If price isn't an issue, the Baxter chair from Williams Sonoma is drop dead gorgeous, especially in Ikat Medallion fabric.
For a much cheaper take on it, Overstock has patterned Parsons chairs with curved backs that are pretty.
I went looking to see if there was any kind of dining bench that might work - how about this (maybe in another color though):

Oops, overstock link didn't work, but you can search "curved back floral side chairs" to see them.
I think that is a beautiful table. I'd try the red Conran bentwood chairs with it; just four at the table (two on each long side), with two tucked away in a closet for reserve, so you could easily sit six if you needed to.
For every day purposes, the table can be seen through the open backs of the chairs, and I think the red would set off the black beautifully. The simplicity of the chairs would let the beauty of the table shine through.
It really depends on the rest of the room, but my first thought was also Kartell chairs - or some other crystal clear chairs. It would create a nice mix between old and modern, but again it depends on the rest of the room.
I also like to idea of different matching chairs. I think that could look really good.
The Koi Design K 2 chair in cognac leather would be lovely. Noticed them used in the NYTimes home section last week too.

The contrast would really suit your table I think, and show it off to advantage. (Plus, I think those Koi chairs are quite sexy).
Maybe I'm coming from a different design standpoint, but that table made me immediately think of these chairs:

I love the gothic feel they give together, but the addition of some homemade cushions (or store bought) would break up the matchy-ness and be fun too. It would help if I knew more about your overall style.
I agree with Terri. - parson chairs would be simple enough to concentrate more on the table and you get a variety of color options.
I would go with light/bright upholstered chairs, or something like these, for contrast:

Emeco Navy chairs! Or knockoffs if you're cheap like me. I just picked up a fabulous table from the thrift store that's long like yours with curvy legs and a very traditional curvy cut top. I put two white slip covered Ikea chairs on the ends, and am putting 4 Navy chairs in the middle. It would look killer with your table as well!
How about a good old classic Eames white eiffel chair: http://www.dwr.com/product/designers/d-g/charles-ray-eames/eames-molded-plastic-side-chair.do?sortby=ourPicks
Or, for a little tongue in cheek matchy-matchy, the Prince Charles chair: http://modernica.net/index.php?target=categories&category_id=44
Or, the CB2 Vapor chair: http://www.cb2.com/family.aspx?c=11021&f=4957 It's that Ghost-eque look, without the Ghost price tag or looking like a shameless knock off.
