Name: Matt, Ryan, Mason
Location: Greenpoint, Brooklyn
Size: 3,000 sq ft. indoors/ 2,500 sq ft. outdoors
Years Lived In: 4
Matt, Ryan, and Mason know that they have one of those mythical New York City living situations — a cavernous raw space with an equally expansive outdoor component!
An industrious team, upon getting the space Matt and Ryan immediately hauled in thousands of pounds of lumber and custom built bedrooms and dividers so that the loft would serve the needs of all those involved.
When openings arise, the founding members make sure that a potential roommate's aesthetic and collections work well within the existing style of the space. While the loft may seem crammed with stuff, these guys are discerning. Not any artifact or salvaged desk will do. They have standards and know what they like. It's a controlled chaos.
Ryan is a prolific painter who paints at a very large scale. His pieces come and go as they are sold or return from gallery shows, but they all fit well on the loft's huge walls. Their bright colors and collage tenor are no doubt a heavy influence on the loft's visual vibe. If you look closely, however, there are many wonderful smaller elements that add a richness to the decor and that each come with their own story.
Matt, a photographer and film maker, is also an accomplished chef. Great food comes out of their home-made kitchen and great meals are eaten at their home-made scavenged dining room table!
The place is kept really tidy and organized. It is both a residence and a work space but above all, these guys have transformed it into a much loved and protected home.
Apartment Therapy Survey
Style: Homemade, artifacts.
Inspiration: Living above a gilder's workshop and being reminded of
quality, old world craftsmanship every time we walk in the door.
Favorite Element: The dining room table that was built from reclaimed
scaffolding wood found on the streets of Greenpoint. We re-finished it this past summer and it's a table around which we and our friends have shared many good meals and late nights.
Biggest Challenge: We've been in this space for 4 years; we've had the luxury of living with great people and friends, and it's important to maintain a good dynamic and keep it in the family.
What Friends Say: "Why is it so cold in here?"
Biggest Embarrassment: The new Styrofoam-Bauhaus apartment complex that has blocked our previously unobstructed view of midtown Manhattan.
Proudest DIY: Using 3,700 pounds of lumber to transform a raw, open
area into a functional home and workspace.
Biggest Indulgence: The deer sniper stand: it has entirely no purpose aside from offering a different vantage point.
Best Advice: Build things yourself and live around elements of which you are proud and that tell a story.
Dream Source: Cowood Gilders, From The Source, Uline, Heavy Lumber, Obscura, Bass Pro Shops, Evolution, Polam, TheCroweCompany.com, Pearl
Paint, ArtStar.com.
Resources:
Aside from a very few exceptions, most everything in this space has been
built, inherited, gathered or found.
Check our Matt's non-profit, Just 1 Percent which allocates a percentage of restaurant tabs toward worthy causes.
Thanks Matt!

Commercial Flour Sa...
So cool! Oh how I envy your sq. footage...
This is serious. The artifacts juxtaposed with that sofa, dining room table and cabinet make the space sublime. Great tour.
Where can I buy one of Ryan's pieces? (I'm in NYC)
Awesome tour- more like this please!
This place is so cool. Now I want to be friends and hang out at their place all the time. I will bring cookies!
I love every single piece in this space. The artwork, the furniture, the sculptures and objects... I'm totally in envy. Money is all that stops me from creating a similar space.
This is an advice for AT writers: add the outdoor sqf and the indoor sqf in all your tour post please, pretty please with sugar on top.
That way we can really understand the pictures!
And did I mention I'm completely jealous of all that studio space... Right now I have a shared studio space in a small spare bedroom.
This is AMAZING. It is like one of those supremely awesome apartments that characters in movies have that don't really exist. Except this one does!
Full size stuffed wolf is the greatest shit ever.
That monster truck painting needs to be mine. Give it to me.
Kind of boring, no? ;D Awesome place. More house tours like this, please!!

Oh. Wow. This place is incredible.
What a cool space! The art is amazing! Cute puppy too!
The ultimate man cave!
In the first picture, that lock on the exit door - where can I get one of those?
dream home!
I want the monster truck painting!
Love it
Wow, what a fun and creative space! Oh man, do I miss Greenpoint! Well done, boyz!
Wow, very nice
Love the Deer head - where can i find that particular one!?
What a great Guys' Place. Ain't nuthin' to tweak here---it's aggressively itself! I love the mismatched refrigerators, and how the energy of the place gives them no choice but to work!
Love the red lacquered shark. where u get it?
The coffee table/map drawer? What is that called? That's exactly the kind of thing I've been looking for but don't know what' its called...so don't know how to look for it!
I was trying to post a comment hit the wrong button sorry ... I would look for the word
"flat file" when looking for the drawers.
super cool apartment. Love the aesthetic/language.
Simply put... Perfect!!
@DK_LA - flat file (like Jennifer said). We have a bunch at my job for architectural blue prints.
Ya....ok, did I read it was tidy?
Tooo much for my taste, it would cause inner chaos to even be a guest in this home.
One of my all time favourite AT tours!!
AWESOME pad guys, well done!!
Amazing! Unique!
So tired of seeing the same pretentious 'eclectic' style templates and copycat designs everywhere.
This is the best on AT tours. Well done!!!!
Seriously epic. Fun--lots of fun. And all the great modifiers in between.
awesome space, AMAZING art - sure beats my place!
Love the quirky, personality filled space...but if I see the word "curated" in a tour description one more time!!!
it's so nice to see a tour on AT with this much artistic chaos! not that the other more unified artists homes are absolutely gorgeous, and i would live in those spaces in a heartbeat, but this definitely speaks to me on another level.
This is fabulous. Please let us know when their sitcom will be airing! ;)
I had to laugh when I read the above survey caption "What friends say". When I entered the House Tour my first thought was: how gorgeous! The sum of the decor is also a work of art, besides the art that is displayed. My second thought was, is that studio cold in the winter?
I am with KATKREIG, it would be a privilege to visit.
PS. What a pity to have to look at a big, grey, ugly box building. Is that Bauhaus? No matter, all the same boxy stuff.
Coolest place EVER in the coolest city ever!
This is awesome! I love the designs in this place! I almost love it as much as my librow which I can't live without.
Everyone posting seems to love this space, but it's kinda chaotic and confusing to me. It's very clean but so 'out there'. I feel dizzy...
Easily the best house tour I've seen on AT in the past few years I've read this blog.
