Name: Matt
Location: Hell's Kitchen - New York, New York

Although an accountant by day, I find my true passion lies in the world of color wheels, paint and fabric swatches, and overall homekeeping. My goal is to defy stereotypes in all that I do – be it my unconventionality as an accountant; or as a self-proclaimed designer with my juxtaposition of new and old, modern and historic, in my home décor.

My building? A preserved 1800s traditional brownstone in the heart of vibrant Hell’s Kitchen in New York City. The apartment? A floor-through 1 bedroom, complete with original wide-planked hardwood floors, ceiling medallions, and crown mouldings that made my mouth water and heart pitter-patter at first sight.

As a workaholic, my home is my sanctuary and retreat. I am revitalized by my travels, both across the country and the globe, and try to incorporate these experiences into all of my hand-selected pieces. Be it my extensive collection of maps, or hand carved found objects, I want my apartment to be anything but cookie-cutter. A well-balanced color palette, in my opinion, has the perfect composition of both warm and cool neutral tones for the walls, accented by clean, crisp white trim.

I strive for practicality, with a smidge of elegance in the living room – topped off with hint of whimsy – to welcome and entertain guests. My bedroom, however, strikes the perfect balance of frivolity and luxury. My bed is my safe haven; I find comfort in endless amounts of down feathers, the finest of thread count linens, and a blend of traditional and contemporary in the most historic of settings.

My type A personality and unrelenting eye for detail is my greatest asset and my greatest liability. In decorating a 100+ year old apartment, I have come to accept flaws and imperfections as charm and character. The uneven wooden planks, or the years of white semigloss paint on the moulding are what make my apartment unique. The loose floorboards in the bedroom, and the creaky built-in library shelves all represent a snippet of history and a story that long precedes me.

My goal is to preserve, enhance, and accentuate these charms – all while adding my own bit to the ongoing story of my charming Hell’s Kitchen New York City brownstone. It may seem like a small story, but it’s one I love sharing with others.

Thanks, Matt!
