In between book tour stops and guys' room makeovers, I got to visit Dwell on Design, California's preeminent trade show for modern design, and only in its third year in Los Angeles. Hosted by DWELL, it isn't huge, but it does feature a really interesting take on what's going on in modern design, particularly out west, and I found some great local sources. I'm going to be sharing my highlights today and tomorrow. Enjoy!

>> Vintage European Posters: Elizabeth Norris's Bay Area vintage poster company had the nicest, highest quality selection of posters that I had ever seen. This is a great resource to bookmark for anyone looking for this type of thing. All of their posters are in top condition (often new and never displayed) and washed whenever necessary so that they feel fresh off the press.

>> Wallter's New Wall Planters: I've known about Linda and Max Geiser since 2004, when they were just doing bedding, and it's been a treat to watch them grow their offerings with time. Their new powder coated aluminum planters (also blogged here) caught my eye with their simple, colorful shapes, lightness and super easy maintenance.

>> Dyson's New Air Multiplier Fans: Aaron had a chance to see these in person in New York, but it was my first time, so I snapped a pic. While the one on the left looks funny to me, I really like the long oval one on the right.

They had a demo of the air multiplier in a local target here. It was a bit underwhelming and I could definitely feel a bit of a lack of air where the middle of the ring was. I much prefer a fan. Too bad, I really wanted to like it.
I agree with Tamarind about the air multiplier. It was ok, I guess. They sell it by saying you don't get "buffetted by air", but in all the years I've used a fan that really hasn't been an issue for me.
Love that Hawaii poster, but it must be a rogue wave. The surf at Waikiki runs perpendicular to Diamondhead for the most part not parallel, doesn't it?
I don't think all the fans purchased in my lifetime would cost as much as the Dyson Air Multiplier.
As much as I would love to be enamored with the Air Multiplier. When I actually saw one in person it just seemed cheaply made and unsubstantial. The amount of air was nothing special. Cool idea, but expected much more after enjoying a Dyson vacuum for years.
Perhaps if there was an app for it, or a place to plug in my iPod? (joking)
The planters are $90!
I agree; feels cheap. Plus it is LOUD as heck! But, I'm sure it will sell to the must-have-the-latest-thing crowd.
I think Miscellaneous Man has superior posters, but he doesn't show at DWELL.
I wonder at times about the authenticity of posters such as the ones shown here. It's hard to believe that such fragile items could have survived after decades of neglect.
Furthermore, there must be a great incentive for dealers to make digital copies of the best of the genuine items that are available. The copies could then be mixed in with originals, and sold as a rarity.
I'm not accusing anybody of cheating, but the opportunity seems to exist.
