Last year I confessed my love of paper dolls, and in the months since I've started noticing artistic articulated animals. They are perfect wintery non-holiday cards, or make excellent low-stress craft projects. Some assembly required!
- Emma Kidd's Etsy shop, benconservato, is full of fantastical animals and combinations of animals: I love this sea rabbit, but all of the Hybrid Hinged Beasts are very cool.
- I first fell for articulated animals when I saw Karen Schnoor's Make Your Own Animal Cards at Prairie Collective in San Francisco. Give Prairie Collective a call if you're in the neighborhood, but otherwise the collection is available from Little Paper Planes.
- Little Paper Planes also carries Furze Chan's Paper Animal Puppets. Each one comes with a stick! I especially like the dotty sheep.
- Oh My Cavelier's Mechanical Animals are available through Art Star Philly. They have a wonderful vintage feel, but are actually based on Juliana Swaney's original illustrations.
- This Reindeer by Maria Dubrovskaya could make a perfect winter-birthday gift. Note that there's no assembly required, for better or worse.
- Jennifer Baughan makes Articulated Woodland Creatures like this raccoon and fox, but also has a Loch Ness Monster for good measure.
