Megan's Travis Heights Bungalow

House Call

Name: Megan
Location: Travis Heights — Austin, Texas

We own a sweet 1929 bungalow just south of downtown Austin that is a part of an eclectic & trendy historic neighborhood called Travis Heights. I don't think there is an inch of this home we haven't touched...

It served beautifully as my husband's bachelor pad until I moved in and started the cleaning process -- first order of duty was removing the dishes from the yard (?) and we haven't sat down since. We have added an enclosed laundry room with extra storage space, doubling the storage possibilities of our kitchen...gutted the bathroom and replaced a pedestal sink with very tidy & organized Ikea fixtures -- European cabinets were the only ones that would fit in such a space!...remodeled the kitchen to include new cabinets + stainless steel countertops + a Viking stove + a Shaws fireclay apron-front sink...created a nursery with an expanded closet in our guest bedroom ...painted & repainted & painted again...added a humongous organic garden and created a home for seven spoiled chickens...refinished the original oak floors and restored the original oak door...added a covered limestone patio in the backyard with limestone walkways...

Our taste is all over the place and draws inspiration from unique discoveries you can't often replicate. We love to see what we can find at auctions, in consignment shops, and my mother-in-law has a special gift for bringing us amazing little finds that we weave into our home. We like to add an element of surprise in every room, an unexpected little laugh that is often a bit shocking...but hands down, our most treasured decorations are family heirlooms or have a personal story associated with them. One of my favorites is the large metal "U" (for our last name) in the kitchen with a kitschy "Hercules Magnet" (a ripped body builder man that is actually a magnet), attached to it -- because we have called one another "The Magnet" since day one. Also in the kitchen is an entire team of Mexican wrestlers - luchadors - hiding in the salt bin, behind the coffee, etc.

The house is currently on the market and though it breaks our heart to know we can't stay here forever, we are so excited for someone else to live here and love here. We have made this our home, this is where we brought our first baby home...but now that we have made it what it is, it's time for someone else to love it like we do. When it sells, we are moving out to the country so we have some room to roam and let our little ones run naked.

Thanks, Megan!
