- Inspiration for my palette:
- My apartment's color scheme is inspired by my travels, especially the artisan markets of Latin America. I've always loved the juxtaposition of the warm terracotta colors of the clay buildings accented with brightly colored woven items. I've tried to recreate that feeling in the main room of my studio apartment.
- Colors used in my room
- The main wall color is Dulux Canyon Stone. I used ICI Green Bank for the trunk and a combination of Dulux Pencil Yellow and Kelly Moore Inca Gold for the dresser.
- Tips for using color successfully
- My best tip for using color is to trust your gut and pick the dominant palette from a place deep down inside - a color that makes you inexplicably happy even if it isn't in fashion or doesn't necessarily "go" with the rest of your room or apartment. Color is about feeling and above all, it must make you feel good.

Room for Color
I love love LOVE the combination of bright color and warm hues... it really brings the whole room together! Great job!!
This room is so inviting. Very nice! Love the green chest and pops of color throughout! Very nice!
Great space, wonderful color combination..you got my vote.
Are the double doors your closet?
Recently, I painted my open plan living room/dining room/kitchen with this very color scheme. I felt the need for an earthy contrast to my bold colors. Even my flooring is green, so I guess I'm on the right track. I'm relieved to see this post, mostly because it validated my (often questioned) tastes! BTW, your blue chair knocks me out - what presence!
Love terracotta. Great apartment.
I signed up to say I LOVE this room. It looks warm, welcoming, and confortable.

I want a full tour! My color now is green with envy that you have this great place in such a great city!
Living in a (dark basement) studio myself, I am absolutely in love with this room! What I wouldn't do for those big windows. You really made the most of the abundant light with this terracotta palette. The color, the plants, the layout. Efficient and simple, yet so pretty. VERY well done!
Not a color scheme I'd pick, but I salute you for following your own advice to "trust your gut." Your gut didn't let you down. :)
Love what you did with this color and the room. Everything says warm, comfortable, relaxed, YOU.
So warm and bright, well done! Full tour, full tour!
Thanks everyone! This is my first Room for Color competition and I appreciate all the kind words! Melanie
The double doors are a closet - a rather unique one. 10 feet long and three feet deep with a small window. I think once upon a time it housed a Murphy Bed - I use it for my office and (ahem) ad hoc storage. Melanie
Ah! I *died* when I saw that blue chair with the terracotta walls. I am smitten!
Lovely...so warm and inviting! (and I lean toward cool colors).
I love this. Looks like an Almodovar film. :)
Very warm and individual. I love the placement of the plants. So nice. Is that a bonsai in the hall?
Awesome and I would love to stay there! I too would love to see more of your place and a floor plan.
I love this room! Especially the last photo, with the terracotta and yellow together - orange and yellow are my favourite colours, especially together!
Wow! This room just screams "Be Creative! Take Chances!" Hope it continues to inspire you.
Blue chair ~ a cool drink in the warm sun.
What a happy-feeling space! Love it!
Great apartment! Love the colors, layout and overall feel.
Beautiful, feels like my home away from home!
Love it! Especially the blue chair and the pop of yellow!
Such a lovely, inviting space in both arrangement and color! So welcoming yet exciting at the same time.
Now this is a great example of how to decorate a studio apartment. It has a bed and an entertaining space that mesh together well. Nice job!
Wow, I love this apartment! What a great use of color. I love how Melanie used the space so well. Makes me want to travel! Wonderful job!
Wow, ...the use of the space..and color! I' m giving a vote to both. The elements in this room ,especially the touch of yellow, dittoes the author of "Feeling at Home",teachings. I've just started reading the book..think you are ahead of me!
Melanie, thanks for sharing your warm home with us ... so much light & life! Would you mind answering a few questions?
- Your plants are stunning! How did you train your plant around the mirror & up the wall to the ceiling?
- Please share the source of your cocktail table pairing.
Life Abundant - Thanks for voting for me! Most of my plants come from IKEA (my philosophy being if they can survive in the basement of IKEA they will thrive in a home). The one around the mirror didn't start that way - "Audry 2" was getting out of hand so one day I started unraveling it and it was so long I decided to hook it around the mirror. I liked the look and now it mostly grows that way on its own!
Love this color palette. The time of day (and amount of sunlight) really makes a difference...see the contrast between the first and fifth photo. Excellent use of space with the bookcase room divider. Lots of nice plants. Well done!
Traveling Melanie - Thanks for your prompt reply!
* Please share the source of your coffee table pairing.
* Love Audry 2! LOL! I have an Audrey, too. Your decision to have her hug that mirror is beautiful & brilliant! So you just draped her ... no clear Command hooks or anything?
Melanie, where did you get your sofa and chair from?
Hi Lifeabundant and ClemB!
Lifeabundant - the coffee table pairing came from Overstock.com. They had mixed reviews on the site but they are quite sturdy without being too heavy. And, no command hooks or anything with the plant and mirror.
ClemB - the sofa is a fake leather "click" sofa and I bought it online - I can't remember which store, but there were several sofa companies that carried it (it comes in white too). You can "click" it to flat and use it as a guest bed. The chair is from a vintage store in San Francisco called Past Perfect in Cow Hollow.
Love your room! The pillows tie the colors together!
Really beautiful, magical place! I love the warm earthy colors...very homey!
Thank you for your answer, Melanie. I was pretty sure it was a convertible sofa, those are so useful!
Melanie, thanks again.
I have been in this room and it feels absolutely fresh and at the same time warm and resonant, and the combination of colors is unique!!!
Love it. It's my fav
Very cool Melanie, I like what you did with the space! I especially like the orange this time of year :)
