These unique rugs designed by Melina Raissina are felted by hand from 100 % sheep's wool and vegetable dyes in Iran. Because they are a thick felt, they will age well and require different care than most rugs. The high levels of lanolin help protect the rug from stains and wear. i'm on the verge of buying a felt rug, not one of these but from another source, and am wondering if anyone has any experience with the care and cleaning of them. thx.

aaron - sure. paolo lenti @ karkula. not inexpensive, but i fell in love. have heard they might be tough to clean, so before we take the plunge, i was hoping to learn more.
BB - I am familiar with them, great choice!
We have felt rugs from Kyrgyzstan, and they have held up well -- if you have a 50 pound dog, it's best not to use the felt rug in the room where the dog likes to run around in circles. Otherwise, don't use a vacuum cleaner -- a carpet sweeper works great, and a periodic shake outside does the trick as well.

I made friends with a beautiful grandmother from Turkmenistan this past year who has been the head of a folk art cooperative there. They specialize in gorgeous handmade felt rugs.
