If you want really cheap, try the Ikea Billsta 46 1/2" round table top. Well under $100 in the US. I can't check the exact $ because the Ikea site isn't working for me.

I just bought a chrome version of this base off of Craigslist and am using the birch-finished Billsta with it. They look fantastic together.

I had a friend cut a 25" diameter piece of plywood to use as an adapter between the screw holes in the top and base.

Thank you! I will do just that! Now, if I can find a friend who can cut a hole in plywood.

there's also a GREAT powdercoater/painter in menlo park/redwood city called RS performance coatings: http://www.rsperformancecoatings.com ... while they do mostly cars/bikes, i've seen them do great things with huge batches of chairs, too... ask for bob-jr.

I am so disappointed that is not 'Melrose' in L.A. Now I have to drive 5 1/2hrs...

How much did it cost to have the table base done?

Spiffy--I recently had the same fake table base powdercoated. Mine was super rusty (so lots of work to sandblast) and I had two coats of paint put on. The price was combined with another piece, but it was probably 60-75 bucks.

this makes me want to go out and find something, anything, to get powder coated!

I've got a couple of the same bases that were originally in the same condition as your before photo. I spray painted one of them, but the finish isn't holding up too well. I just got a 42" round walnut tabletop from the Room and Board outlet last weekend, so maybe it is time to look into having it powdercoated.

Elizabeth - I love posts like this. The only vital thing missing is the actual price for the work. We have all seen many times in AT comments that "reasonable" means many different things to people. This is a great opportunity to educate. One of the most toxic elements of the home interiors industry is its rather pathological determination to be coy about prices. An actual figure allows people to set appropriate expectations for cost. Whether or not it is reasonable will ultimately be determined by each person's financial resources and priorities.

you're right, "reasonable" is different for everyone. The sandblasting and powder-coating for this job cost me $160, which to me was "reasonable" considering the (extremely high) quality of the work and the experience I had with the vendor. It was also reasonable for me because I only spent $50 on the table to begin with.

With vendors who work on a quote-based, per-job pricing system, I generally don't like to publish what I pay for their services, partially because I am in "the trade" and many vendors give me trade discounts as well as the fact that with many vendors I'm a repeat customer who sends a fair amount of work their way, often leading to discounts per-piece (which I pass on to my clients.) It should be noted that I never accept discounts based on my job at AT, and in cases like this didn't even mention that I worked for AT until after the job was already done and I had paid for it.
