Name: Melyssa
Location: Arlington, Massachusetts
My name is Melyssa and I share this home with my boyfriend Ted, his daughter, our dog Marshall, and our two cats. We live in what was once the carriage house to the home next door (built in 1860) on a quirky little side street in the center of Arlington, MA — 20 minutes outside of Boston.
We rent one side of the house (there are two units total, side by side) which consists of 1000 square feet of living space spread out over two small floors. The first floor has a small living room, small kitchen and 1/2 bath. The second has 2 bedrooms and a full bath.
We have lived here as a family unit for almost 3 years and have organically let the space teach us how to best utilize it over time. It is an ever changing process and recognizing that fact has helped us tune in to both the home and each other along the way.
My relationship with Ted is a second "marriage" for both of us. It is creativity (specifically, music) that led us to one another 6 years ago and it is very important to us that we keep this creativity alive in our home. Our home is a constant work in progress, but the goals remain the same: to create a space that feels both vibrant and relaxing upon entering, a space which promotes creativity yet respects the need for rest, a space that surrounds all who enter with love.
Thanks, Melyssa!

Ercol Bar Stool
Wow! Wow, what a beautiful, light, calming space. If you are ever in San Diego maybe you can give me some design help.
Nice use of color! I always love turq and red.
I would caution you against the print of guns prominently displayed. If it's in the family/health bagua (and I suspect it is), you might want to rethink this artwork. Symbols in feng shui are relevant because they seep into our subconscious and have a subliminal effect on us even if we are unaware of it.
love the "stay gold pony boy" :)
So cute! I would love to see the outside, carriage houses are so cool to me. Full tour?? The blue in the living room looks almost exactly like the color in my kitchen. I like how the pink, yellow, and red work in there. I might have to incorporate that into my kitchen. :)
Great home with a lot of warmth. I love a place that isn't afraid of color statements (and not just small accents).
Very cute home - but why does the daughter have only princess costumes to wear?
How do you know they are costumes? Maybe her daughter dresses like a Disney Princess all the time! Haha! Wouldn't that be the cutest thing ever?
it's cute it's young and the dog is comfy.
Very nice. I also love the pony boy frame :) Enjoy your happy home!
Wonderful use of color, looks like a happy home :)
I want to see more! Nice use of color.
Beautiful! Can anyone tell me what kind of string lights would be used like this? I've always wanted to try that. Maybe a dumb question but I'll ask anyway.
Love the colors!!!
SUPERGRRL - Not dumb at all. Just regular ol' "Christmas" lights - white wire/white lights.
I love the energy your place gives off. I must know where you got the Pony Boy print, but if you want to keep it a secret I understand. I love the trays in your living room. I saw them at Target and couldn't think of any fun way to display them. You however did.
This place is right up my alley! I love all the color used with abandon! Good work!
I love all the light and use of color. I wish we could have a full tour! :)
I love these short tours, but with only a few pictures why is the second image nearly a duplicate of the first? And without context it's impossible which room is shown in the last picture. I really would have liked to see a kitchen and also a master bedroom photograph. (With a bed, in case either picture 4 or picture 5 actually is the master bedroom).
Melyssa--in-depth Christmas light question for you: I love 'em, have them up in the dining room, wrapped around birch logs in the fireplace for spring/summer, and keep them up on the front porch year round. You seem a like-minded fellow fan so I wonder: have you found a good place to get strings that last? I can't help myself but pick up cheapo strings at Christmas Tree Shops, CVS, etc when I see them on sale and then of course they burn out a few months later. I need to find QUALITY lights... any suggestions?
and, your apartment is so fun and lovely!! great great colors.
Honestly, looks like a model apartment in a apartment complex......why have it set up that way?
I live in Arlington, too! Also on a quirky little side street. :) Nice to see some local color (literally)!
It does NOT look like a model apartment. Why is it set up that way? - what a weird question.
Love your use of colors! We had that front door on the house I grew up in! My daughter would love your girl's room. Good job!! Can you tell me the green paint that you used?
(running to pull out my clear Christmas lights to use all year) :)
Love the color punches, pow!! What a great room for a little girl to have for her own.
Thank you to all for taking the time to share your thoughts.
Ted gets full credit for finding the "Stay Gold Pony Boy" print. I will hunt down some additional info and report back - happy to share it and support the artist who created it!
Regarding the Christmas lights, the ones I currently have up are literally from a True Value hardware store and are by a company called Holiday Wonderland who makes them specifically for True Value. Here's the link: http://www.truevalue.com/product/100-Count-Clear-Light-Set/15589.uts (may have to cut and paste). I use the 100 count but they have shorter ones.
For more unique versions, I've had good luck with both of these sites:

I must admit, we have some form of string lights in all of our main living spaces (bedrooms included) - such an inexpensive way to add warm, calming, inviting light. I really believe that soft lighting can make a huge difference in how you feel when entering/spending time in a space - even if you don't realize it consciously. We rarely have overhead lights on.
Love it love it, the colors are fab as is the art. I personally adore the gun print - there's nothing wrong at all with, geez will people keep their religions out of the comments.
Thanks Melyssa, just wanted to make sure :) I have to try this,
thanks for the light sourcing tips!! shine on!
Is that a wall sticker or a painted piece in the living room? I have been looking for something just like this!
1. Stay Gold Pony Boy print: Union Press, Somerville, MA
http://www.unionpressprints.com/
2. blue paint: Ace Paint, Water Flow A40-4
3. green paint: Ace Paint, Perennial Border A33-5
4. cherry blossom/bird decal (alas, leeleeluvspennie, I did not paint it):
Single Stone Studios:

happy creating!

TexDoll - I have looked at pretty much all the apartments in the town I live, at least all the ones in an apartment complex. This looks much like them all.....down to the three things hanging in a closet, the weird furniture layout, the pastels, etc.
I love it! Def does not look like a standard apt layout. And why all the hating on the daughter's dress up clothes? I'm sure they didn't force them on the kid. Let children be children. Parenting is hard enough without all the judgment from other parents.
Could you imagine growing up in this house? How cool would a childhood like that be?!
Lol I like the people mentioning the little girl's costumes. Maybe she has her regular clothes in drawers? There's no picture of a bathroom either, did you assume there isn't one? :P
Oh and I want a full tour! So gorgeous!
I NEED a tour of this home!! I love what I see!
