While it's not universal, it is often true that folks gifted with the "good-fashion" gene are gifted with similarly good taste in home design. In the case of Michelle, a radiant seamstress/fashionista, one can certainly see this aesthetic cross-pollination. Her personal style and that of her home generally tend toward the classic, but she manages to keep it updated, fresh and interesting with a bit of glitz and whimsy.
Michelle's sense of style perfectly embodies the feeling of "new traditional," blending tailored, sophisticated, and classic elements that connote luxury and timelessness, without ever verging on the fussy or stuffy. The condo is decorated in a primarily neutral palette, creating a serene atmosphere, and Michelle has added a great deal of richness to the space with carefully selected soft colors and a subtle variety of textures. She's taken advantage of the architecture of the space, keeping the built-ins and tiled fireplaces main focal points, and a mixture of new and antique pieces, decked out with the perfect accessories, makes for a simply adorned home that feels both elegant and cozy.
One should be careful not to conflate the traditional with predictable or dull, especially when it comes to Michelle. She's a boundlessly enthusiastic person, and the sparkle of her personality spills over into her home. Reflective surfaces pop up in every room, and items like a mirrored tray in the living room, a crystal-droplet chandelier in the bedroom, and an antique mirror in the bathroom keep the interior chic, light, and playful. Taking cues from her mother, who always had plants and fresh flowers in the home, Michelle adds doses of vibrant color to the space by way of her green thumb and regular trips to the florist. And everywhere you look, you can spy Michelle's custom, self-designed, hand-sewn, or DIY touches, making clear her also seemingly endless energy, handiness, and creativity.
Unafraid to make the space her own, she recently converted her guest bedroom into a dressing room and inspiration space, which has quickly become one of the most used locations in the condo. (Beau, her eight-year-old chocolate lab, has also taken a shine to the room, and as you may be able to tell from the tour photos, it's one of his preferred places to sprawl.) Michelle is a stylish person with an equally stylish home, but what really comes across when one is in her space is a fresh, easy, and light feeling. This is far from the staid traditionality of a showroom, an overly-staged catalog, or the plastic-covered parlor of a hoary grandmother. These updated classics (and their owner) are exceedingly inviting and fun.

Nomade Express Slee...
no comments?!?! tsk tsk tsk... such a lovely & fresh home! really love the effects of the tin ceiling tiles as art [and I must say those shoes are KILLER!]
The shoes are definitely a killer! lol! but I love the light fixture in the bedroom.
I like how you handled the awkward space between the fridge and the corner.
A word to the publisher: Please invest in a few wide angle lenses. Small spaces will thank you for it.
Nice place! As a former Chicagoan I have to say Uptown is an underrated neighborhood full of great buildings like this.
Such an elegant home!
That looks very good to my eyes, favourites are the cabinets built in below the fireplace mantle in the living room, and the mirror hanging in the window on MBath03.jpg - both of which I am totally stealing as ideas when I can!
What a gorgeous space. Love the touches of your fashionista DIVA-ness throughout.
those shoes!!! *love*
I love the way this place looks beautiful, clean and like a real person lives there! Someone who actually uses accessories, lotions and fabulous shoes!
Such an elegant home. I like how your furniture compliments rather than fights with the architecture of the home. Really digging your hanging pendant shade fixtures with the crystals...very pretty! Really appreciating your creative shoe display...you really have some awesome shoes in your collection! Also like how you have the mirror placed in the window of the bathroom. So many creative ideas here. Definitely bookmarking this for future reference. Thank you for sharing your lovely home. Oh and your pooch is adorable!
Those shoes, Those shoes!
Those shoes in the first pic bring out the old feminist in me. Ten-inch heels with shackles around the ankles.
The home is lovely, though.
Oh and the house is great too!
Love everything about your home... I want to move in and put my feet up.. very warm and inviting! Love the shelves you have displaying your shoes... and I love the shoes! Bathroom mirror is great, though unless you're short like I am, maybe longer chains from the top? Still I love it!!
Like everything, but the tile around the fireplaces are totally throwing everything off for me.
Lately I've been feeling a bit apologetic about my traditional style and then this house tour comes along. It's so fresh and inviting and personal.
There are so many details that I just love - the porch, the mirror in the bathroom, the chandelier in the bedroom...Everything is just lovely.
Beautiful woman with great style! The apartment is near perfection. I need to be friends with someone who wears such amazing footwear!
Bravo!
I absolutely adore your home!
After reading about the different design styles AT readers have tired of, it was refreshing to read your Best Advice namely to, "Buy what you like...not everyone has to like it."
As a fellow shoe lover, please share the source for the pretty, two-tiered, patterned shelves in the bedroom used to display some lovelies from your vast collection.
P.S. I just might try to snag the same chandelier in the bedroom if I switch the ceiling fan for an air conditioner.
Hi Sabrina,
I'm sure Michelle will chime in here at some point, but I can tell you that she made the patterned shelves for her shoes. Her DIY skills and creativity are seriously enviable.
I love absolutely everything about the condo but especially love the beautiful person who created such a warm and beautiful home. It's fun to see my old things presented in new and creative ways.
Love it Love it Love it. Great Shoes. I am also stealing the mirror in the bathroom window idea.
Hello Sabrinas! It was a family affair - a quick project while my parents were in town. I just took a canvas board covered it in fabric, added a 3.5 inch wide pieces of 1/4 " board cut to the length - covered them in fabric and then used 'L' brackets to secure on each end...and there you have it! It didn't take long!
Love the mirror in the window and your shoe display in the bedroom. The bar area with all of the glass is just gorgeous. But I think some of your artwork doesn't match your sophisticated self and home.
I love it! And I have to say, I also love that based on sources like TJMaxx, Homegoods, Cost Plus, Target and Costco, I could probably afford much of it (although I fear I don't have the fashion/design sense to put it all together so well).
Bravo!
super sick shoes.
Your place is so cute and cozy. And, OMG those shoes, I love!!! You have an amazing way to display them. I want to know how did you make that hanging thing to display your shoes in bedroom. Please share!
This is one of those weird times you wish you could meet someone this cool and be friends with them based soley on their shoes and home. It's so homey! My taste doesn't run to traditional but it's nice to see something other than MCM (which I love) on AT for a change. Diversity rocks! It's also nice to see a Chicago neighborhood other than Lincoln Park/LVW/River North/Gold Coast featured (again-not being a hater, as I lived in all of those neighborhoods at some point, just a Gemini always seeking variety).
I can't believe no one else has said anything about that clawfoot soaker tub that I'd totally utilize morning, noon, and, night. I hope you take a lot of bubble baths, Michelle!
SHOES. WANT.
Now I that I've gotten that off my chest I will go look at the tour and be back :)
I especially love the dog, balcony, and tub. Nice home, Michelle.
Okay, so whip me with a wet noodle. Not a fan of shoes, clothes, jewlery used as 'art', but that's me.
The home is beautiful but the warmest thing about it is her SMILE and her dogs BIG SAD EYES. :O)
The architectural details in this house are stunning. I also love the plants everywhere, really bring it to life.
So can I have those shoes in the first pic (and the dog!)?
I adore this condo! The mirror in the bathroom is very creative! I would have been stumped on where to put it when faced with that window above the sink. The colors used for the walls and accessories are very soothing to me.
Michelle's skills aren't just limited to DIY and creativity... just walking in those heels takes some serious balance and skill!
I see someone already called dibs on those shoes in the first picture. - Love those!! Where did you get them?
Love the white dresser in the bedroom. Nice place and great shoes!!
I must have that shower curtain!
This woman defines wonderful!! Thank you AT for featuring this marvelous stylish warm and funny woman.
Yeah great apartment blah blah, whatever....I WANT YOUR SHOES
Wonderful home and a charming young lady! Amazing combo!
And I hear ya on the dog hair... IT NEVER ENDS!
Thanks for the inspiration!
I LOVE everything about this place. So elegant and glamorous! Love how a lot of things come from my two favorite stores...Home Goods and World Market! Yay! :)
Many lovely things here, but my favorite space is the small porch area -- so lush and inviting! We're in the process of a DIY update to our very sad front and back porches, and this is exactly the vibe I hope to create. Thanks for sharing.
Forget the shoes, I want that dog with the dumb sad face (and I know that's just your Lab act, Beau). Love everything about the condo and really love that Mom Tiz loves what's been done with her "old things." The joys of having daughters!
Great place and I love the shoes as art. Wish I had those leopard print pumps. Go on with your bad self!!
Very classy place!
What a great place--love the combination of craftsman details plus fresh modern--it's the sort of mix I aspire to have. Beautiful work, Michelle!
LOVELY home. Well done
A nice balance of opposites--elegant but not stiff, traditional with modern touches, airy but not empty.
LOVED the inside! I'm not a shoe person so I bypassed the show photos.
Only suggestion would be to repaint the front door jam (in the entrance photo). Kind of like having toothpaste on your blouse when first meeting someone. Your front door is your first impression. Otherwise - really really beautiful!
Someone likes grey. I like your idea about hanging the mirror in the window. I also like the chandelier with the drum shade over it.
The most gorgeous thing among many gorgeous things in this home is that smile. That smile! Wow!
What a nice kick-your-shoes-off home! LOVE THE SHOES......And everyone is right, Michelle does have a lovely smile!
Very serene, elegant and grown-up looking. I have to say that the shoes and art are my least favourite things, but that's just me. Everything else is just lovely.
And yeah, you could power a city with that smile! :)
I really like the bathtub (and shower curtain) and dining room table. And the dog, of course! We need more stylistic variety like this. And I have to say it, Michelle looks nowhere near 40!
Lady of the house= a stylish delight
Dog of the house= adorable nugget
House= charming loveliness
Great style!
Awesome house! Traditional but with an individual spin that makes it anything but generic, with some ingenious ways of balancing the personal, the practical and the beautiful.
And yes, that shower curtain is amazing! Just what I was looking for earlier this year but could not find. Would love to know where it came from -
Beautiful home. Hopefully you didn't break any future homeowners' hearts by painting over all that beautiful molding, although it does look really good white....
thanks for sharing a home that provides attainable styling and actually looks like it's lived in and has created memories, quite a break from some of the overstyled, impractical posts
Beautiful home that is so warm and inviting! Michelle has a great sense of style and comfort.
Michelle—WHERE did you get that SKIRT?? Looks like a Kate Spade print, but article says you’re a seamstress, so perhaps you made it? Would love to know where to buy either the skirt or the fabric. Thanks!!
Not usually a fan of traditional but this on has so much going for it! I am not a shoe person but the shoes do add personal style! I love the two hearths, that green tile is delicious! I think any home that shows the personality of the owner instead of just being "out of the magazine" is naturally easier to make a connection with. A home is not complete though without some orange. A throw pillow? A throw? Even an accessory? :-) Also, in the dining room a bigger more colorful rug under the table? Maybe even a muted color kilim? Overdyed purple carpet? :-) Ok, now we're talking about ME :-). Great place!
thumbs up!
This home feels very refreshing!
awwwwwwwwwww the dog.
wow the smile.
nice house, you go girl!
I'm actually a little lightheaded due to the fantastic green tiled fireplace in the dining room. The home is beautiful, with such gorgeous crafted details. And that dog!!! Be still my heart. We all send scritches.
Love, love, love - the shoes, the tub, the green fireplace tile, the balcony, and how you tied it all together. What a pretty and comfortable home!
The green tiled fireplace is my FAVORITE PIECE in this whole beautiful collection. I absolutely adore Michelle's taste in colors, materials and adding a fresh bouquet of flowers in contrasting pinks and magentas to make them stand out. What I love most about this house tour is Michelle's smile - it is AMAZING! I can imagine she lights up a whole room when she flashes it!!
Is there storage in the bathroom that is not shown in the photos? I like the creative use of limited space, just curious about where the toiletries go.
Great Todd Hase on a budget look....
Coming from a tension rod/curtain cover-upper of many years, that cleaning closet hidey hole next to the fridge is pure utilitarian genious. If you started a blog, your followers would flock.
And how refeshing to see so much positive energy here today. I had nearly given up on AT after all the utterly ridiculous comments lately. They are not helpful and amount to nothing more than self-edifying bullying. Please folks, think before you write.
Beautiful home, beautiful smile! That fireplace is gorgeous!! And your dog has the most soulful eyes...
Serious house crush. Love it!
Amid all of Michelle's amazing taste and finds and ideas, my biggest moment of surprise was when I said "Wow -- who knew that 'square' would be such a refreshing shape for a dining room table."
I mean this is the BEST way-- this house reminds me of my great aunt's home when I was growing up! It's feminine and cozy. Absolutely one of my favorite places to take a swim, eat a homemade lunch, shower off and curl up with my aunt and sisters to watch a movie! Such a lovely home! I could definitely come here to decompress at the end of the day!
I am so envious of those built-ins by each fire place. Your porch, actually your whole place reminds me of somewhere in the south. And the couches are begging for some nap time!
I like how she took furniture from big box stores and made it look personable and homely. Even the matching sofa/loveseat set, which i am normally dead set against, didnt stand out that much when paired with the more original looking pieces in her home.
Loved the tub, sideboard
Disliked the kitchen, just blah, as a condo owner you have the option of doing so much more. And i dont mean throwing in some Home Depot granite.
I love it- I love HER and her beautiful, happy smile, and that claw-foot tub, and all the shoes...be my friend? :P
Inspiring, but I feel like those shoes in the last photo deserve a special shout out. So fierce!
I love that this place is down to earth and not shi shi. And I love that everyone seems to agree. Transitional is my style too so there's a lot to like here for me. I really wish there was a photo of the whole ceiling. From what I can tell, it's beautiful.
Oh!! I loved your home and your shoes collection!!;)
Wait, 40th Birthday? So where's the fountain of youth in this apartment?
I'm your neighbor in Edgewater. I LOVE your place. I'm actually a bit envious about your outdoor space. It's so inviting! I also love the idea of shoes as art. Enjoy your beautiful home!
I would settle for the shoes in the last photo, but I would love to have the condo as well!
I absolutely love Michelle's radiant style! Though my own home decor style is quite different, her place is so well put together and uses sources that I can actually afford. Highlights for me were the mirror hanging from the bathroom window, the shelves surrounding the fireplace, and her fabulous display of shoes. Also, the dog is super adorable! If you had a home decor blog, Michelle, I would totally follow it!
@HUNTED -Maybe she didn't 'make it' because she was already there. I see nothing wrong with her displaying these items. What's wrong with a framed diploma? It's a bad thing to have items out that remind us of our achievements?
Also, these items are all in her dressing room, not in a more public area of her home, not that it matters.
Okay...it has not been said enough...LOL....SICK SHOES ma! Okay..now to your home...love it! Maybe I am missing something...but what is wrong with framing your diploma and displaying it...and really, it's just apart of the picture showing her desk area...Hell, we see enough dead animals on the floor and walls here...why not show off your education..People...PLEASE!
Thanks for all the wonderful comments about my house, dog and myself !
All - shoes are Jeffery Campbell (and they are fierce!!)
@heleena - not sure of where, but shower curtain is Fieldcrest
@Cailo - porch furniture is Homesgoods (of course!!)
@Tomathorne - a gal never tells her age, but you did - (lol)
@Victoria - Skirt is from TJMaxx (where else...!)
@abbyl - across from the toliet, another built in
@vintage - Thank you!
@hunted - not staged, my Hermes is there unless its out on the town! stay sweet
As a man there is very little in this home that I would emulate or adapt for my place, but it is one of my favorites ever. This has such individuality, warmth, charm, personality....it's just so down to earth, unpretentious and REAL. LIke those great aunts, grandmothers, neighbor ladies so many of us were lucky to have known. I bet even if Michelle or Beau hadn't appeared in a single picture this feeling would come through. This is THEIR home , not some show room for a designers talents and pricey recommendations intended primarily for effect and impression. It welcomes and invites, not 'WOW"s and that is a far more engaging and enduring feeling for a real home to provide.
I so appreciate and admire the simplicity and directness of her responses in the survey and absolute confidence in revealing her affordable and mass market sources and her joy in what she finds there and her skill in blending , modifying or altering those finds.
This is the world where most of us live, not Jonathan Adler and Design within "Reach", but Ross, TJ Maxx, Target, Cost Plus, thrift stores and that piece or suite from that older generation family member who is helping us start out. Thank you, MIchelle, for showing us how unapologetically stylish, lovely and joyful that world canbe.
RSR...You nailed it! And that is the point that alot of AT people are making when they share their homes with us- the readers/viewers..Remember the key word "their". They just want to share"their" piece of heaven...their homes bring them peace and they invited all of us....pro designer down to the person that just moved out on their own...to the man/woman who are starting life over again. Again, Great Job Michelle, home and education!
Again...Did I mention I LOVE THE SHOES!
Ab-so-lute-ly fabulous!
I like the way that this is YOUR house - it's got a good vibe and and I'd feel really happy coming round for a cuppa tea and a giggle. And, yeah, yeah, your shoes are great : )
Your chocolate pup is beyond adorable.
I love that you honor your college diploma.
Your house is definitely a home.
Michelle, thank you for sharing with us..
Forget the tour, those SHOES are to die for!
and great smile!!
Love love love every inch of this lovely home tour. Thanks for sharing!
@Hunted
Why are you so bitter?
A beautiful woman, a beautiful home and possessions displayed as she damned well pleased to display...and you think its gross???
There's something so very sad about anyone who would try to put a woman down for her achievements, her belongings and the obvious love she has for herself, her family and her home. Get a life, Hunter. Maybe then you will be able to spread some love as opposed to hatred and bitterness.
@Michelle...your home is stunning, your sense of style just as awe inspiring and your positive attitude is what makes your smile all the more beautiful. I wish you many years of love, peace, success and joy in your home. <3
I simply love these colors together. I'm a complete flip-flop wearing hippie but I absolutely love you've found a way to display your fierce shoes. I imagine that they make you smile everytime you see them - and thats what its all about!
MissTiz, Congratulations. It's not easy to combine glamour and craftsman architecture, but you nailed it. Not to mention you are quite the creative problem solver — it's also not easy to fit 21st century possessions in an early 20th century abode. That bathroom mirror is too perfect. And the outdoor space is very European. But winter in Chicago?! Be careful on those porch steps in your towering heels. ; )
@Hunted: I have Issey Miyake and Chanel SHOPPING bags and a Schiaparelli hat box displayed in my dressing room. AND now I pointed it out here for all the world to see. How gauche is that??
Beautiful but seriously way more beautiful are those big white teeth screaming HEALTHY!!!!!!, im just thinking ancestors ate real food, this chick has beautiful features!
@Michelle / MissTiz, thank you so much sharing your home (& consequently, yourself) with us. There is so much warmth here that I had to marinate on this tour a few times before trying to articulate anything! I love it a llll ... the elegance, design & personality of the building, real elements (i.e., mahogany, brass, steel, glass, marble, stone), rich fabrics in serene hues, etc. Love, life, warmth, serenity, sass, genuine, joy & simply b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l only begin to describe this home and, I suspect, it's owner! Now, I'd love to see you fashion designs ... do tell (website, retailers, something please?)!
"Oh, Chicago architectural details, how I love thee."
I couldn't agree more--I used to live there and even the most ordinary apartment had them.
I suppose it's too late to ask this, but just in case Michelle reads this... where is that gorgeous necklace you're wearing from? It's gorgeous :)
Okay, let me make sure I have this straight... you live in CHICAGO, have incredible taste, a beautiful dog, a fabulous older home, over 50 pairs of shoes, you can sew AND you are totally hot?!?! Wow, I am impressed! well done!
Oh my goodness. So beautiful ;-D You are gorgeous, your dog looks totally sweet and cuddlesome, and your home just...I don't even know where to begin. I am so charmed, impressed, swept off my feet (onto that beautiful couch with that buttery pillow), and happy for you and for everything you have done here. Everywhere you look there is calm yet fresh perfection. I love your home, and I admire your taste. I love the porch. When I saw that I thought Oooh New Orleans influence. Then it just went on...& on. Sorry to gush - but seriously I am nearly head over heels for your beautiful home. HAPPY SIGH :-D That tub. That fireplace. The strong crisp white, and cool muted silvery's paired with the warm buttery light golds. Wow. It's a knockout! I LOOOOOVES IT! I can totally understand why there are people here wanting to be your friend. Are you kidding me??? Me too me too!!! :-) xoxoxo I love you! PEACE <3
wow nice way to display shoes!!
Michelle oh my god I feel like I could talk to you about your apartment and style for hours, starting with GREAT NECKLACE! GREAT SHOES! and right on through, god I LOVE that black cane bench, I love all of it.
Andrea Jane, I was dating a Scandinavian recently, and between the heavy MCM focus here and his streamlined taste, I was starting to feel bad too!
Stylish house and stylish lady with a beautiful smile. Am loving the fireplaces and built-ins. Very relaxed. Amusing way to show some of those fab shoes.
Dang, some really good house tours lately. Love it. Love the lovely lady of the house, love the bones of the house, and love what she did with it.
Hi guys, thought you should know some idiots have badly plagiarized this piece: http://www.stylerchic.com/2012/06/27/michelles-traditional-fashion-forward-house-tour/
Her style reminds me very much of one of my all time fave decorators,Sheila Bridges!
