Undercover microwave. If you use a microwave and want to get it out of the way, it might be worth a look at Sharp's new microwave drawer...
It installs undercounter, reducing countertop clutter. The 24" design pulls out and can hold up to a 9x13" oblong dish. Its controls are angled upward so you're able to see and use them without stooping. Available in stainless (shown), white, and black for around $800.

Very cool - but I am envisioning steam burns floating up to my face, cause, well, I'm a spaz.
I adore these! I'm a kitchen designer & I use them quite often. No one has any complaints. Haven't heard anything about steam in the face.
Sharp also had some great combo products designed for small spaces such as a cooktop/microdrawer combo & cooktop/oven/microdrawer combo.
But if you have the extra cash, check out Dacor's line of microwave drawers (made by Sharp) They've got some beautiful looks!
I like this idea much better than the above the stove or up in a cabinet microwave.
The microwave in my beach house was so high, I could barely reach a bowl if it had ended up in the back on the turntable! So dangerous....
I'm 5-3, not tall, but not that short that I think I need a step stool to use my microwave. This is great for those of us who like our appliances a little lower down.
The only negative is that it seems like a good way to hurt/tweak one's back. Its a great solution for those with counterspace issues though.
I find slightly above counter-height to be the best location for a microwave. No bending to lower anything in, and not tip-toes to reach and pull.
Cheers!
I'm getting me one of these. Love saving on counter space and hate the way microwaves look under a cabinet. How much is this one???
I can't seem to get the photo to appear.
I am currently remodeling my kitchen and had planned from the begining to put one of these in. however after looking at it person I am not.
I think it is a great concept but the execution is not thought through. the drawer fits a 9x13 dish but any thing over approx 5" tall will not fit. This includes a large 1 quart measuring cup.
most of the items I use in the microwave are taller in nature so they do not fit.
for what ever reason Sharp does not list the interior dimensions in any of the technical spec's that i could find.
I love this, and use it often in my projects. Just fyi, Sharp is coming out, and I don't know when, with a much sleeker, flatter, model than they currently have. The one they have now is very rounded and protrudes way too far.
I think it's ergonomically very good and natural to work with. Maybe the best alternative would be to have a mw installed just above the countertop, but it takes up precious counter space. Installing it above the backsplash, it's uncomfortably high. Love this.
if pasta sauce were to explode in it, how would you clean the ceiling?
doesn't a microwave need airvents at the back? I would love to get rid of my combo-monstrosity. I have a railroad windowless thus ductless kitchen NYC apt. Would this work there?
yes! this is one of those ideas you look at and think, 'duh... of course! why didn't i think of that? and how come it's taken so long for someone else to figure this out??'
coco - on this microwave it looks like the air vents are in the front on the bottom, so I bet it would work fine in your kitchen.
Think how much fun it is to put things in (and take them out of) the microwave. Now imagine they're heavier and hot and you need to ensure they don't spill. Plus, forget the ability to see what's going on inside.
This is an idea that looks better than it really is.
