I know that some of you, dear readers, have soured a bit on this particular style, but in my heart there is still a soft spot for all things midcecntury modern. That said, even I never know quite what to do with 'modern' pieces from the late seventies and early eighties. They always seems so awkward and self-aware and vinyl-y. That's why I've got to give this Steelcase chair rehabilitation mad props. Graphic designer Jessica Jones took these old, dated desk chairs and made them beautiful and current.

Jessica spotted these chairs at Jubilee Furniture, a resale shop in the Chicago suburbs. Taking them apart and re-upholstering turned into a bit of a family project, with everyone helping out. Jessica claims not to know anything about reupholstery - they just took the old fabric from the chairs, she says, and used it as a template for the new cover. For someone who claims to be a novice, I think you'll agree that the results are really fantastic. (Even better: it's an Ikea fabric!)

Sprout Side Table
I have a 1982 Steelcase office chair that is hideous but really sturdy and comfy. I've been thinking about spray-painting the steel frame and reupholstering. This gives me just the encouragement I needed!
