It's not uncommon for us to develop mid-century fatigue, but when we see sweet, folksy interpretations of the style like these ceramics and collages by Art Institute of Boston MFA candidate Michael Pfleghaar, our faith is renewed.
We're partial to the ceramic plants that look like little paintings in three dimensions, which become an adorable tableau when arranged as a group. In addition to his sculptures and collages, Pfleghaar's Etsy shop also offers a large selection of paintings of mid-century architecture and interiors. Though his work focuses on inanimate objects, it doesn't lack emotion. As he says in his artist statement, "I became intrigued by how the objects that we choose to surround us become a self-portrait or biography of our lives." Count us fascinated too.
