What is the advantage of SMALL? Small not only provides affordability for me, but a coziness that really makes it seem like home. Plus I was never a fan of chores--the smaller the place the fewer housekeeping obligations.

What's your favorite resource for your home?
The post college years have been monetarily tough...so I'm a fan of the thrift store and a can of paint. With the exception of my "desk" all the furniture is either a hand-me-down or thrifted treasure.
What is your one favorite element in your small, cool home?
I fell in love with the curtain dividing my bedroom the minute I hung it. In all the apartments I've lived, I've never had a closet in my bedroom. The curtain helps hide all the clothes and clutter when people either enter my room or see it from the living room.

Sprout Side Table
Love the use of color on the pegboard, love the squirells and love the alexander henry print on the pillow (i just had a dress done in that)
...What is the light up thing on the wall near your MCM hutch?
This is a well-done apartment. Great kitchen organization.
I love it! It's a home that looks like someone actually lives in; comfortably and with personal style. Yeah for the unstaged, non-sterile look. The colors are warm and welcoming and there's a ton of character.
i adore your kitchen. and LOVE that it includes organized CANDY!!!
my god you eat a lot of cereal. lovely apartment.
Wow, you are very organized..looks great. Love all the colors, especially on the pegboard...may have to steal that idea!
i too noticed all that special K!
great color in the kitchen.
great lived-in vibe.
could use a little editing & decluttering in the main rooms
I LOVE your apartment!! Very cozy AND cute!
I love that kitchen artwork!
Where is it from? :)
This place is super cool. All of the decorating choices look deliberate and coherent and the space is well-managed. There's no clutter and an excellent sense of scale and colour. Not chockablock with spendy MCM icons and super-cool stuff like some entries, but very well curated and executed IMO.
It's all very organized, but too much stuff!!!
i think it looks so great overall. it's very well put together.
LOVE IT.
And I LOVE your kitchen art.........PLEASE tell where you got them :-)
LOVE THE KITCHEN PHOTO!
that pegboard with the yellow accents is absolutely stunning! though i must suggest that you store your spices elsewhere, lest they be ruined by the heat of your stove.
this is a lovely little apartment.
well done!
Love, love, love.
I tend to like just a bit of organized clutter-- makes the space feel homey and less like something out of a home design manual.
I second ilovepoodle...those kitchen prints are fabulous! Who did them and where can something similar be found?!
I like it, but you seem to have an awful lot of mugs! You've done a great job--your kitchen is great!
Hello, fellow Ann Arborite! (OK, so technically I live in Ypsi, but whatever).
The colors in your apartment are amazing; I wish I could paint in mine. Also, where the hell did you find all your cool stuff? I don't what thrift stores you go to, but I've found the pickings in Ann Arbor's to be shockingly slim.
Well done, and good luck!
I love your kitchen and everything in it!...pegboard, artwork, etc. And I have those same multi colored stacking mugs : )
i want this to be a finalist so i can see more pics of the place...
love. love. a little clutter-y in the living space, but I love the kitchen! what the heck is the decorative ledge/chair thingy that the vase is sitting on in picture 5?
I have that SAME squirrel nut dish!
i'm not sure how much people are responding to comments about their own apartment...but...
regarding the art in the kitchen. they're actually teatowls i framed. you can find them at http://threepotatofourshop.com/index.php?cPath=1_8&osCsid=580d63c09111b567e2992f842eef9c69
to my fellow ann arborite...don't give up. the white "bar" cabinet in the living room came from the re-used recycle center in ann arbor. granted it was pretty gross when i got it. but four coats of white paint and voila. also the lamp above my desk came from kiwanis. keep hunting it's out there!
the "decorative ledge/chair thingy" in picture 5 is just that...a decorative thingy. my apartment is just a portion of an older home. i think my bedroom use to be the parlor and the decorative thingy frames a pocket door that's been nailed shut by the landlord. it's a little strange i know.
I like the squirrel and acorn containers. What are those? Sugar bowls?
Nice! I really appreciate seeing apartments that have real traces of human life!
Your place is fun, homey, and nicely put together. Thanks for sharing. I will be buying those tea towels for sure!!
you must have some photographer friends because the art in your apartment is fabulous.
Much nicer than any apartment I ever lived in in Ann Arbor!
I gave your apartment a Super Cool because it is. However, as good as your over-stove arrangement looks, I don't think it is safe to be reaching over the stove for all those items; it would be much safer to move them to the side of the stove. And of course, spices should definitely be moved.
Someone needs to get this person a shelf for her spices...
...but it's a seriously cute place - esp loving the framed vintage ads.
oh my god...I have been wanting those tea towels from three potato four, and seeing them framed like that in your adorable kitchen just clinched it for me. What a fun apartment - eclectic indeed. It's a wonderfully personal space, perhaps in need of a little editing as others have said. But in this case the clutter is charming.
my husband has tried to persuade me throw out the same squirrel container for the last 3 moves -- so glad i don't listen to him :)
very unique! love it and i hear you on the cleaning duties :)
perfect!
when can i come and hang out here?
girl, you got a lotta cereal!
You have a lot of stuff in general (for the space, of course), but somehow keep it from feeling cluttered. Bravo!
very nice, i'd like to see more of the apartment
i wish i could take the lease over.
It's either amazing luck or pure genius to make that tomato-soup red formica table and ditto-color settee happen together. And the walls in that room are great.
I too like someone mentioned previously like a little bit of "organized clutter" and I don't think you need to edit at all. love it and voted super cool. Beautiful.
The shelving unit in the kitchen with the mugs hanging from it, was that there when you arrived, or did you purchase it? Would love to incorporate it into my own small kitchen.
Also, if anyone is interested in the Eep birds tea towel (from The Potato Four, but not one of the tea towels used here), it can be found from the original artist at: http://www.skinnylaminx.etsy.com for slightly cheaper (but not sure if it actually is once you include the shipping). She's one of my favorite etsy sellers.
Beautiful, great example of personal style and organization in a small space
Love the colors and how the spaces were divided for maximum use!
That is a LOT of cereal.
The spices, cereal and stuff on top of the fridge is throwing me off but it's a cute place.
FINALLY! Someone who eats as much cereal as I do!
who names these tours? "eclectic comfort", maybe?
WOW! I love the organized kitchen!!!
You have a great eye for color and design... your home looks so pulled together and welcoming. Very cool. I can only imagine what you'll be able to accomplish when you DO have financial resources because you've done such a great job without them. Well done! :)
Cute, small and vertical. I love how you use every bit of space for storage, etc. The Michigan blue on the walls is a nice touch considering you live in Ann Arbor!
love the colors it's definitly you
i think it's just the right amount of cereal.
great look...well put together.
Love the gummy bears. I could use a few right now.
Your space looks lived in and well thought out. It's obvious you are dealing with a small space, and you've pulled it off well. It has character and isn't a hospital room. Your apartment is much more than a pretty "face" and actually deals with small space coping mechanisms. The clutter is balanced and indicative of your space contraints. I don't find it distracting one bit... some people need a bit of clutter (I am guilty of that).
The acorns and squirrels are so you and a great touch to add a bit of home to such a small space. YOU have definitely defeated the "blue box" institutional look that some would go for. Storage seems to be handled creatively from the stacked cups next to the coffee pot to the myriad of cereal, are you able to eat all of it before stale arrive?
I LOVE IT!! I usually don't like the throw-back 50s era stuff, but oh I saw the yellow diagram of cooking implements, with below it real cooking implements laid out similarly, and I fell in love. And I was so impressed, when you rent you never know what era your appliances will be from, and so by having a throwback feel to your kitchen goods, it makes your outdated appliances look super trendy, and like a deliberate design choice.
You're awesome. Let's be friends.
I also love the deep blue wall (what a pretty color!) with white cabinet. Aw heck, I like it all.
I'm dying to know where you got your artwork - the yellow prints hanging above the pegboard??!!
Can someone tell me the artist name or where I might locate something similiar??
thanks!
