Name: Angela and Adam
Location: Chicago, IL
Type of Home: Rental Apartment
What inspired you to use color? Rentals can be pretty dreary- I add tons of color to make the space feel like a permanent residence. Every time I move to a new apartment, I change the entire mood by using new paint colors and keeping the same furniture. Color Tip: Don't just look to interiors for color inspiration- the bedroom is the colors of a sketchbook I have, and the dining room is based on a handful of chair swatches.
Colors Used: Benjamin Moore symphony blue, passion fruit, and northern territory. All other colors were custom.
Welcome, everyone, to our Fourth Annual Fall Colors Sharing & Contest. We're looking for the most beautiful & colorful home in the world and sharing all of the great ideas we get with our readers. This year we're amping things up and hoping to do things better than ever. There are two basic phases, the Sharing Phase and the Voting Phase...
1. Sharing Phase - you comment, judges decide
The 40 best, completed entries will be posted on a daily basis for three weeks. You can view them all at anytime via our new, improved contest pages under ALL ENTRIES. During this time your comments are VERY IMPORTANT as our six judges will be choosing 16 finalists from each region based on comments and their own colorful opinion.
2. Voting Phase - you vote til you drop
Starting October 20th, finalist voting will begin on a daily basis through our new bracketed voting system, which will pit our 16 finalists against one another until only one remains. Sound exciting? We hope so.
Best, Maxwell

Shaw's Original Fir...
Great colour combo in the dining room. I adore those red chairs.
Love this! You are so lucky to live in a beautiful victorian with all that lovely woodwork and built-ins. The blue was a brave choice and probably something I wouldn't have thought of, but it looks fantastic in your place and really softens up the woodwork. If I ever find myself living in a victorian home again, I may have to try that.
i looked at a VERY similar apartment out when i was still living in chicago, minus the upgrades of course. this place needed a lot of work done, but it looks just like it. i love it!
Damn. I think you just won.
I love the color and we're planning the very same look for our island and shelves in our kitchen. Thanks for the inspiration to paint the bottom and leave the top unfinished.
I love the blue and red mixes. Great collection of art, too!
beautiful blue in the livingroom.... really lovely. your bedroom is perfect!!
I love how you've worked with the bones and vibe of the space rather than try to force a particular style. The choices are spectacular, particularly the blue.
This is fabulous! Absolutely lovely place and great use of color that helps bring out all the amazing original features.
Super cool... Seriously, I am rethinking all of my own more muted design choices now! How did you use so many bold, primary colors without them clashing?
this is a really interesting combination. & that place has great bones.
definitely not my style but it's so nicely done!
Great bones but I think the colors are wrong. Cute dog
I love it! I love the colors a lot, the green bedroom, the pink, the blue together with the red chairs. Yes! I guess I could live there...
Gorgeous!!!
Love the bedroom!
But what is up with the furniture in front of the doors?
Love it. That dark blue is amazing. All the colors are fab, but that's my fave. What a beautiful place. I'm jealous!
Well obviously you are lucky to have such a great rental! I love all the woodwork too, but I think it is especially beautiful with that blue in the living room (set off by the green sofa). PERFECT!
Not really feeling it. You have some great pieces, a nice palette, and an apartment with some lovely original details... maybe it's just the photography, but everything looks a little cramped and cluttered.
comfy, cozy, cool
LOVE IT. My ONLY complaint, is I need to see more dog!
Great use of vintage pieces! I especially love that headboard.
This takes me back to my youth! A friend's parents had a gorgeous old victorian with dark wood everything, deep colors, and that "homey without being cutesy" feel that some people nail perfectly. These photographs make me think of fall, and make me want a hot cup of coffee, something great on the stereo and something fun to do at the dining room table. Very nice.
Love the colors (esp the living room) and the vintage/mod blending. The woodwork is amazing. Reminds me of the duplex I grew up in. So hard to find such beautiful work in newer buildings.
Oh, man. I'm so jealous that your landlord lets you paint. I would *love* to add some bold color to my little victorian rental.
Wall color is great. Apartment has great bones. The Brocade bed really works, the rest of the furniture--not so much. The place needs bigger cleaner stuff, bo wth the quasi Victorian Brocade aesthetic and forget the mshmash. Eclectic isn't working here. Fewer large scale pieces would work better. Color on the walls is absolutely fabulous.
very cute, love it
I love your place. It looks so comfortable.
This is darling. The pup clinches it.
I spy an adorable puppy! Love the home too.
this home feels so comfy and warm. love the shelves above the island and the cups hanging.
Nice color. Nice home. Fun to look at.
I adore red and teal together. The headboard is wicked!
Hi everyone!
Thanks a lot for your great comments. Adam and I just moved into our apartment a month ago, and it already feels like home. Our last apartment was a blank, character-less box when we moved in, so this place has been a cozy change.
As for the covered door- I was waiting for someone to comment on that! Our bedroom is small yet has two doors, a closet, a window, and and short, angular walls. After much deliberation, we decided to cut off the extra door to buy more space on the bedroom side and the dining room side.
and the puppy... his name is norton, we just got him, and he wormed his way into every photo because he couldn't stand being alone for a second.
Thanks for looking!
This feels cluttered, but I like the use of colors.
gorgeous!! the use of color works so well!
love this , what a beautiful home you have.
can you tell me where did you get the clear plexi chair?
looks fantastic !
Spectacular! Gorgeous! Incredible! I mean where to begin..first off great bones. And that green couch so antique and kitsch, but looks comfortable and inviting with the colors behind it. I can only imagine how many of my house guests would want to crash there! I may never be able to get rid of them!
The blue is spectacular. Make's me think of the ocean, sitting with friends sipping cocktails in the warm evening sun and never ever forgetting to hydrate.
I just love your apartment! Your choice of colors are amazing!!
Great job on color choices to define each space. The blending of different period pieces, original woodwork (thanks for not painting the woodwork) and paint colors gives the whole space a warm, liveable feeling, yet still can be a great space for entertaining with the accessories invoking some great conversation.
This is a winner!
