Color Inspiration: I've seen yellow and teal before and loved it. I knew I had the duvet in a closet and my little girl was growing up and tired of her pink and green room. The duvet had some of the green in it, so the green pieces that I already had in the room would still work fine. I painted over the painstainkingly previously done room and stenciled the yellow design you see. It was my daughters idea to put in some teal spots on the wall which I think is great!
Color Inspiration continued: I had to keep some of the pink items (like the bears on the dresser since they are sentimental from MY childhood) but other items fit in perfectly like the cat on the bookshelf that my mother made and the bunting, poms and crown from her last birthday. My next project is a tulle purple bed skirt and her initial out of buttons on the head board, which is actually tan, but I made a slip cover from and Ikea bed sheet and some piping from quilting material.
Tip for Using Color: We went mainly with yellow since it is her favorite color. I also wanted something that she'll (hopefully) like for awhile. But I love to paint, so if she changes her mind in 3-5 years that is ok with me! I think the best tip is to go with something you both can live with and then find other items you have that coordinate with that main color and pick another color from those items. I don't mind that not everything in the room is yellow, teal and purple. Face it, they are kids, they are going to choose to have other things in their rooms that don't match that particular color scheme! Sometimes you have to let go a bit.
Colors Used: Yellow, teal and purple.
Thanks for your colorful entry Debra and good luck!

Where did you get the stencil? How long did it take to paint the design?
OMG MY MOM MADE ME THAT EXACT CAT!!!! She has not held up as well as yours has, her head fell off several years ago, but the red gingham kitten lives on my son's bed.
Also, what an amazing stenciling job you did! How hard was it to do all that so perfectly? I love your daughter's idea of the random teal spots.
It did take a long time. I did it over a couple weeks. I would do some each wall since you had to wait for it to dry to move on. The part that was frustrating was that the stencil did not have registration marks so it was hard to keep it even and it made it so I couldn't work in more than one spot, so it isn't as perfect as it looks, but thanks! I still love how it turned out. I got it at designerstencils.com
I am just an old guy, however, I love it. The colors are perfect for a little girl and should cause her to think she is in her own little world.
That wall is fantastic!
What a win win situation. You're daughter gets to enjoy the coolest room ever, and her wonderful mom gets the satisfaction of knowing she made a work of art that her daughter loves and enjoys. Great job, I hope you win!
You stencilled that? Holy crap, I thought it was wallpaper. Amazing!
i LOVE the colors. So bright and cheery for a little girl to grow up in. Great job Deb!
I love that these photos are not styled within an inch of my life. Real plastic toys, yay!
Thanks littlestchicken! She loves that dollhouse and plays with it lots. We have the plastic parts in it and the wooden ones my sister made when she was little. It's a good mix. We even have GeoTrax in my sons room, GASP! ;)
