- What I Love About My Small Home:
- The light in my place is wonderful. I'd always preferred shadier spaces, but with floor to ceiling French windows in the living room, and southern and western exposure, the light paints the space in a way that can only make me feel good. I also love the original details of the apartment, built in 1928, which include the kitchen cabinets and sink.
- Biggest Challenge of Living in a Small Space
- The biggest challenge is the limited space in my kitchen, but I solve this by storing things like canned goods in the refrigerator, stopping at the grocer for the things I need for a couple days of meals, and eating simply. Or getting take out.

I really like the clean lines in this room. if only my home could look this uncluttered and streamlined!
Simple, peaceful, elegant! Well-done. I would like to have seen a photo of the dining room.
You have a funny little kitchen..it's really sweet.
You really have style dude!! Nicely done.
Humm...find out if it's okay to store can goods in the frig. For some reason in the back of my pea brain head, I don't think it's a good idea but can't remember why.
Props for the pottery!
Great space. I like that it's not over designed, has character and reflects your personal style. However it's still has a broad appeal which is really nice. Great job!!!
Awesome! I love how you can totally tell when a man has decorated a room versus a woman. This is definitely masculine. This place is beautiful. Well done.
Your place is fabulous! I love the way you've decorated the living room - the art work propped in the window, the mirror over the little antique oak table, the bare tree branch - all are fabulous. The little lamp with the yellow base is awesome! Love the kitchen sink. Looks like you've got a lot of cupboards in the kitchen. You must enjoy the lovely light that pours in through the tall windows in the living room. I think your place is perfect! I ♥ it.
I love that pillow on the orange chair - where did you buy that?
great place!
So beautiful! Love your pottery, too.
I love it! this is the first entry that stopped me in my tracks. well done!
Full house tour please! Very nice. Would loved to have seen the dining room and bathroom also.
Fantastic. Would love to see a full tour.
I love your space......................it's a perfect mix of clean lines and comfort!
Awesome! Where is the couch from? Very stylish - the whole place.
Your chic window curtains really enhance the overall elegance of the total space. Very, very lovely.
Like so many of the other comments... I think you're place is a real stunner. As a guy who does his own decorating (and sometimes helps others when asked), its nice to see another masculine space. I've submitted my little place for consideration in the contest as well and hope it shows a fraction as well as yours does... REALLY WELL DONE!!!
Hi. This is Mike, the occupant. Thanks so much for the nice feedback. The sofa is a Hutton left-back sofa chaise in grey velvet, from Room and Board in Chicago. The people there are the best. : ) The pillow on the orange chair is from Pier One, if I remember correctly. Thanks again!
The mirrors on the closet door are brilliant. There's a lot of gray, but it's soothing. Nice work.
I'm not much of a commenter, but I just had to say that this space has been my favorite so far. This place is oozing with charm and your furniture selection and placement is magnificent. Favorite part is the kitchen, hands down. And I want to steal that orange chair...care to share when you found it?
Ok, I need to know where you live and if there are any empty units in your building. Like now. Before I have to go home to my own dreary apartment without gorgeous casements.
Definitely two thumbs up!
you've done a great job. but frankly, that apartment is so fabulous it would be hard to ruin it. anyway, kudos
Fantastic place. A brilliant nod to mid-century without making us feel like Bess Eisenhower is about to show up unexpectedly. You definitely know your design - perfect use of whites against some really cool colors. Come do my place.
great living room...makes me happy!
Lovely. More neutral and clean lined than I usually go for, but this is perfect. The living room, those windows. Beautiful.
Very nice. Where is the orange chair from?
Very nice. Where is the orange chair from?
Really amazing. Where in Chicago are you?
Mature and stylish; so many of the entries have reminded me of kids' or teenagers' rooms. This says a grown-up man lives here, and he's got great taste and elegance. Well done Mike!
Great apartment !!! Can you please tell us where that red ( or orange ) lamp is from ? ... I love it.
This is such a great space! One of my favorites! Would you mind sharing where you got your curtains? I'm looking for something just like that. Good luck to you!
This reminds me of my apartment in Chicago in the 90's, your windows are much better than mine were! I am not intimating that your decorating is 90's, just that your layout is essentially my apartment from back then.
Needless to say, I love everything you did!
I really love this space and I think you've done a great job with it. Some cool MCM-type furniture along with some more contemporary items...but nothing that overwhelms the original details of what is obviously a cool apt. (with really nice light).
ps to LarryA2...I think you meant MAMIE Eishenhower (or Bess Truman)...
Hi Again. Mike, the guy who lives here. Thanks again for the kind feedback. Just to answer questions...the orange chair came from an antique mall at Detroit's Eastern Market, and the orange is the original. I've seen a reupholstered pair at Broadway Antique Market here in Chicago, and an original once online. The orange floor lamp came from an antique dealer friend of mine in Michigan. The curtains are from Ikea. They're inexpensive, and a nice weight.
Beautiful apartment, I'd like to see a full tour too. Here's another furniture question for you: where is the smaller grey sofa from? All your seating is great.
@Epindc You're right!!!! I KNEW something was wrong with those two names going together. Good call.
Very nice, the lighting is very soothing as well as your color palette, I especially love the coffee table and that bronze ? tray above your bed.
This is by far my absolute favorite entry in small cool this year and I am glad to see it's on my home turf, too! What's the name of the paint color you've done the kitchen in, and secondly, what neighborhood do you live in? I'd guess somewhere on the north side, but really, the layout of your place is very unique and unlike any I've seen in the city as of yet.
Thanks, and good luck!
Calm without being sterile, quiet without being drab, elegant without being fussy -- quite an achievement. And the sink skirt is superb.
i adore!
Mike here, again. For those interested, my neighborhood is Rogers Park. The building is a 1928 European style about 2 blocks from the lake. Good neighbors, tree-lined street, and a wonderful landlady.
The light in the living room is my ideal. Wonderful.
Hey Pseudoscientist - I'm sorry I missed the other part to your question. The color in the kitchen is Palladian Blue from Benjamin Moore's Historic Collection. The color code is HC 144. I've used it a couple of times, now, and it's an interesting color. Sometimes blue, sometimes green. I was more or less inspired by the blue green of some of my pottery pieces, and it just feels like a color that might have been used in a kitchen from the 20s.
