Name: Mike Shively
Location: Roscoe Village — Chicago, Illinois
Chicago is a city of narrow and often dark buildings. I took an existing 700 square foot one bedroom with tall ceilings, lowered the ceiling, and turned a cramped attic into a light-filled loft.
Downstairs, I made a large living, dining, kitchen space along with a spare bedroom and bathroom. Upstairs is a bedroom, shower, and work space. I picked a rich cobalt to be the only color in the space. All the other walls are white and change as the daylight moves through.
Thanks Mike!

Beautiful! Is that a Gus sofa? I have been searching for a sofa like that costs less than 3k...eek!!
Love that sofa, where is it from?
Beautiful job! I'd love to see some before photos.
Very nice. Your sofa is divine.
And you did a wonderful job!
How did you get away with those stairs?? Code requires you to have a railing when an open side goes above a certain height. It's a fantastic little detail though - here's hoping you can keep it open and obstruction free!
This is a really nice space. I love the blue shelving and the stairs and the bookshelves in the lofted area. Great details everywhere. I would love a full house tour (with some before pics). Pretty please.
Pretty snazzy. Kudos.

A guardrail is required for open stairs in single family homes where the riser height exceeds 30" above the floor. The guardrail has to be a minimum of 34" tall. If the stairs shown have 7" risers, a guardrail would only be needed above the 4th riser; the last 4 could be left "open". On a previous project, a guardrail was installed, and then removed after the Certificate of Occupancy was received. Code officials typically know what you're up to, so construct the "temporary" guardrail in a very sturdy manner :)
Is that a water spigot above the dog's water bowl?! Genius.
Your house is fabulous, love the sofa.
Oh, yes! This is fascinating! Great economy of space and use of natural light! More photos and text, please! Oh, and thank you!
I'm dying for a full tour! I love the blue shelves in the kitchen... and just about everything else.
love the cool tones you have chosen; works well with the color of your flooring.

Could I come live with you? Looooove how you incorporated natural light. LOVE IT.
I believe the sofa is the Jane bi-sectional sofa.
Great job, I too would like to see more.
Really love the dark blue in the kitchen, must see the other side!!
House tour please with more shots of dining room and kitchen...and work space. Looks really great!
That sofa's not gay, it's bi-sectional!
House Tour! House Tour!
Love the bare bulbs in the kitchen. I was planning to install recessed lighting with a dimmer switch but now I'm wondering... would bare bulbs in the living room and on dimmers be a better option? Any thoughts?
WOW WOW and WOW. A great rehab with great decisions, and executions. I LOVE IT!
Where's the coffee table from? I love it!
Woohoo! Roscoe Village represent. As many people have said a house tour would be splendid!
Gus frequently has 15% off sales. I think it is in August. . .
I would love to see a full tour. This place looks amazing.
Looks very British. LOVE.
that brown chair is delicious
Yes, definitely need a house tour!
I love this remodel. I would love to see before pics as well
The coffee table looks like it might be Adrian Pearsall.
Beautiful! Would definitely love to see a full house tour. The sofa is perfect for that space. Well done!
