I've dedicated quite a number of posts discussing the home office (see here, here and here). As a blogger I often forget that most people don't spend every waking moment in their home on the computer. So, for those of you that just require a place to store your files, bills and other important paperwork, here's a solution that won't add an unsightly filing cabinet to your space.
Those resourceful folks over at Martha Stewart have transformed a run of the mill chest into a filing cabinet, bulletin board and mini office. What a great way to store bills and whatnot when you don't need them (which is most likely 99% of the time). The best part is that this project is actually quite simple to do.

What another great idea. The best benefit of a home office (besides being able to work in your pjs) is that it doesn't have to feel like a cubicle. I love these great and creative hints to help me personalize while still staying organized and professional.
I love this! It's so much better than an awkward file cabinet!
I like it, too, but I might put it on rollers so that I can use it where I need it.
This is pretty great.
Hmmm... Pottery Barn used to have such a thing. Glad to see it is still available. Love the idea of rollers per jacasi.
Great piece to have in a small space, or even in a home office in a larger place. I wish more designers would come up with pieces like this for small places.
OMG LOVE
This would be an awesome solution for me, but I would pile papers on top of the chest (procrastinating filing them away) to such an extent that it would be impossible to access the neatly organized contents. Isn't there a Martha Stewart for Procrastinators site out there or something?
OMG, this is PERFECT!!! I've been designing the floor space in my new digs for many months now and the one space that left me perplexed was the 'office' I didn't want to look like an office. This is the answer! With the right size and a comfy cushion on top it can double as spare seating. Putting casters on this thing would be the finishing touch. I've always detested filing cabinets, even the tasteful wooden ones. I don't need to shout to the world "all my 'important papers' are in here." Thanks for sharing this.
I love this! The Ikea Alve storage bench (slides right under my Alve secretary desk) http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40120840
comes with holders for files already, so I use it as my storage already, but the corkboard is a great touch!
metajellyfish: IKEA scores again! They have a sliding top chest (in 3 different finishes) that allows you to keep things on top when you open it.

And it's only $70, meta!
Absolutely brillant, might try to DIY a chest I already have
