As much as we love it that our kitty sleeps under the blankets with us, we would love the option of her sleeping elsewhere (especially when it's hot). We love this truly minimal kitty bed and the possibility of making a larger one for dogs!
We found images of this great plywood box turned kitty retreat in the ATLA Flickr Pool from hindsvikvintage. We're curious to see the rest of the house, but we're suckers for plywood in interiors so we love the little peek they've given us. (For their full bedroom makeover, check out this post on Mid Century to Modern: Before and After Bedroom).
This pet bed is a great, easy diy that means you can customize the size and shape (and to an extent, the material) that you're using. And for fans of modernism/minimalism, you can't get much better than a simple utilitarian box.
Have you diy'ed a modern looking pet nook or bed?

Shaw's Original Fir...
My cats would LOVE that. And I love those plywood floors.
i think a wine crate would have more personality.
I think I'd paint the inside black and create a little overhang that extends 1/4 - 1/3 of the way down in front. Or maybe a little privacy curtain. Cats love curling up in closets among the bedding and sweaters so the more it can be imitated the more likely they are to go there. My cat's always on the prowl for cozy places like this around the house. I frustrate him, though, by keeping all my clothing behind closed doors. So he ends up on my bed or couches. I don't mind, but he came from a home that gave up their closets to him. Still, I wouldn't trade my Pretty Boy for the world.
Very nice although our cat loves waking up the baby way too much to leave the room.
I've made several cat beds out of wine crates. My cats have loved them. You can put little feet at the corners to raise it off the ground slightly and then basically upholster the inside placing a pillow at the bottom. Cats absolutely love the size...it's a fancier version of the cat and kid favorite: the cardboard box.
I've tried various "beds" and other ackittromounts over the years; every little puddy finds an open closet...I had to leave them open for years since they wouldn't stop wanting in. They all find their little places, no matter how we try.
The whole room is awesome. I'm working on a wall hanging credenza/litter box/cat bed that looks amazingly like the one you have hanging on your wall but now I just feel bad that I didn't use plywood.
I clicked on Aster's profile and almost every comment she's ever made is negative and even her nice comment's usually have a little dig in them someplace.
I can't wean my cat off of her (rather unsightly) cardboard box. Oh well! This is a nice option, though.
I just got a cardboard box a bit bigger than this with stuff shipped in it, and I'm having a hard time removing it from my feline friends. It's their "club house"! Even the house rabbits love it when they are on the loose.
I agree that somehow partly enclosing the front might make it more appealing to some cats who like to hide. But it's a nicely sophistiacted version of the clutter at my house right now!
(I'm also trying to figure out how much the flexibility of the top of the cardboard box appeals to one of our cats -- she seems to like to bounce on it, although I can't tell if that's deliberate or just a byproduct of the box being cardboard. But maybe there is a way to make a kind of "trampoline" top for a plywood box, to get a similar effect...)
I make it simple and use the carrier. I leave it open at all times.
Cute bed. I agree with the poster who suggested adding curtains for feline privacy.
In theory the idea is great; not so much in practice.
My four cats have nooks with pillows, carriers, boxes, and a two-room cathouse. They choose to spend nights in our bed anyway. If we close the bedroom door, they sit in front of it and wail until they are let back in.

The moderncat blog also has several other DIY projects for cats (and their owners) who enjoy good design. While this cat bed (and the room design) are not my taste, I still appreciate the beauty of the design.
a cat bed is only as good as its proximity to a heat source... nobody noticed the vent? i bet they move it in the warmer months
