Don’t ask why but bedding stresses me out. However once you lose the instinct to make everything match it's not such a hurdle.
Try and stay within a color palette, choose a variety of patterns and textures, and when in doubt, go with your gut. After all, your eyes will be closed most of the time.
And if you're interested in the bedding in the first photo you can find them at Plover Organic.

That's not really 'mismatched', that actually involves more matching and effort than buying a few sets of pillow cases and a few duvet covers and not thinking about it.
I'd agree with Phalene because when you do shop for a new set of pillow cases or something, wouldn't you be running through the list of bedding you have for that room & then make sure the new stuff matches?
I do follow a similar thing though. I use white bedding for my bedroom which makes it easy to replace/add things. For the guest bedroom, I buy block-printed bedding every time I visit India. The prints & colors don't match and I buy them from different stores, but they have a common theme (Indian hand block printing!).
Making everything match is the easy route. It's called "sheet set." I agree that mis-matching is a lot more difficult. However, if you're willing to be thoughtful about it you can get a lot of really interesting vintage pillow cases/shams to compliment your other bedding. I find it's hard to try to mis-match with sheets only because the "vintage" style sheets are rarely available in a size larger than full size. If you want queen or king sheets you practically have to buy them as a set or from the same manufacturer.
I have been doing this for years. It's like buying clothing and making more than one outfit by interchanging your pieces. Sorry, all white is beautiful but it gets boring after a while and same goes for matching sheets.
"all white is beautiful but it gets boring after a while"
However it never goes out of style and doesn't get all "Granny Chic".
The bedroom in the second picture is really fussy looking.
This trend is a bit like having artfully disheveled hair or exactly 36 hours of stubble. Annoying.
I like bedding. I start with a duvet cover, and I never buy the matching pillows or sheets. But I often buy a sheet set that includes pillow cases, and then a package of different pillow cases that pull something from the sheet or duvet. So everything matches through colour or texture, but it's not matchy-matchy. I like it. It means I can rotate through the 2 or 3 sets of sheets and duvet covers I have and almost always have something that feels pulled together.
I do like all white sheets too though. And even an all white duvet cover to go with them. It's so fresh and light looking. But I have a black cat who is particularly fond of napping at the foot of my bed. So that's out.
lose. not loose.
I have three sets of sheets in different solid colors that go well together. I also have 6 extra pillow cases in other colors that coordinate.
I don't use the sheets in "sets", I just grab whatever and put it on the bed.
Ooh I want the bed from the second picture. Anyone?
Hey ferha, how about picking up some block printed bedding for me next time you're in India? That's exactly what I want and I'm having a surprisingly hard time finding it for a decent price around here.
LOVE IT!
For me the more color and variety, the better! We're moving into a house with boring tan carpet everywhere, so I would welcome all of this. And why stick with only one pattern? That is so boring when there are so many varieties to choose from. I collect various patterns for my dishes, and would easily mix and match bedding
