If you're an avid reader here, then you're well aware of our near obsession with the DIY play kitchen. We could not in good conscience neglect this shiny new project from Lay Baby Lay.
Vivi Charles is one lucky girl. She has a new kitchen, complete with opening refrigerator and oven, shelving, and working chalkboard. How precious is this? We love how Joni echoed the existing chic decor with mint green stripes and sparkling gold circles.

The unbelievable cuteness of this play kitchen certainly makes the process of inculcating young girls into a lifetime of loathsome domestic duties seem less insidious.
actually, my baby boy would love it, all children like messing in the kitchen!
The rest of the photos of the wonderful and ebullient Miss Vivi playing in her kitchen are a treat too. She's just adorable...and I have to say that I love that the front of her stove is striped and her sink is blue.
Alright, Cloud. What might you have to say about the play kitchen we made for our son for Christmas? Just wondering, might you have kids? If so, does your family ever cook at home? I hate to be a "hater" or whatever, but getting any child, regardless of gender, around a play kitchen is more about them feeling like they can be a grownup rather than recruiting an army of Stepford Wives. Just sayin'.
what an ADORABLE play kitchen! but $200 without the gold dots and pink & aqua paint? eek!
@Lisal,
The problem is not the kitchen itself, but the fact that they're almost always featured as being for girls. Maybe they've featured play kitchens for boys, but I can't recall seeing one. Even though there are parents using them in a non-gendered way, that's rarely shown. Instead, you just get kitchen after kitchen for girls, which ends up reinforcing the traditional practice of deeming cooking and cleaning toys as for girls. (I recently saw pink vacuum cleaners and ironing boards in the "girls" toy section at Target. No domestic chore-oriented toys for in the 'boys" section. Ugh!)
Your kids will trip over that stove drawer- there needs to be some resistance so it doesnt go all the way down.
