We bought these dish towels from Anthropologie as a gift for a friend. She specifically asked us to pick out "some cool dish towels," and we interpreted that request as a chance to take the mix & match approach. There are some things that work very well in mismatched sets that we've blogged here on AT: bath sets, pillow patterns, furniture, and dish towels...
Mismatched dish towel sets have a wide range of uses, from hand towels to place mats. If you have a little time, they're also easy to make yourself. Just take rectangular pieces of fabric and hem them on the edges.

Long live mis-matching! Can I add transferware plates (to be actually used, not displayed) to the list?
What a nice friend you are!
At $8 a pop, they should wash the dishes for you.
Tea towels and the art of mix and match are two of my passions. I agree with your point, Sarah.
I picked up those Anthropologie dish towels a few months back. They were on sale and i love them! They brighten up my kitchen and add a bit of fun to my otherwise builder's standard (begging for a remodel) kitchen.
I love this look. Is there something wrong with me that I don't think $8 is a lot to spend on a tea towel? Especially one that I'll love. It's one of those small luxuries that I can actually afford.
