It's already been established that there is a lot of love for all things retro gaming here at Unplggd. We can't seem to get enough Asteroids, Pac-Man, and of course Space Invaders, so when we saw the DIY version of the oh so neat Space Invaders toaster we knew we had to write about it.
In addition to the toaster, you will also need: aluminum "flashing" from the roofing department of a home improvement store (~1 mm thick), a paper template of your retro gaming icons, paper glue, scissors, a ruler, a Dremel or similar tool (not necessary, depends on shape's complexity),a small fine file, a hammer, and a wood block.
Before you get started, one very important thing to remember is that toasters are powered from the mains and as such if you are not really skilled at mains powered electric device and related safety building practice (electricity can kill) have a friend who is help you with this project. While you are working, remember to never ever have the metallic parts of the prongs and shapes come into contact with the electric heaters of the toaster.
We think if you have the electrical expertise or have a friend who does, it's definitely worth modding an old toaster that might be collecting dust or one salvaged from a garage sale. The finished product would also make a fun birthday gift for a retro game nut.
