Finnish-American architect and designer Eero Saarinen contributed much to our design lexicon, though he is perhaps best remembered for one item in particular: the Pedestal, or Tulip, table. An undeniable classic, this simple, sweeping table looks as good today as it did in 1956.

Designed for Knoll, the collection also includes armchairs, stools, and coffee and side tables, though it's the minimal, slightly space-age dining table which has stolen our collective hearts. Available in two shapes, five surfaces and several sizes, there's a Tulip for everyone (provided you can stomach the price).

Thanks to a resurgence in interest in mid-century design, the table's popularity has exploded in recent years, and these days it's difficult to open a magazine or blog without seeing one. But this is one classic that I, for one, will never tire of — not least because of the Tulip's peerless ability to meld with so many different decor styles.
