The famous painter, who was one of Breuer's colleagues at the Bauhaus at the time of the chair's creation, expressed an admiration for the piece and was one of the first to own a Model B3 when Breuer had a version made for Kandinsky's personal quarters at the school.
In early versions of the chair, the straps were made of fabric, but they were later changed to leather. The chair, which has been mass produced since the late 1920s, has been produced by Knoll since the company gained rights to the design in 1968.

Commercial Flour Sa...
It's worth noting that this design has been knocked off by a ton of companies who produce an inferior product, so be very careful if you're buying one on the secondary market from someone claiming that it's authentic. There are ways to tell the real thing from fakes.
The knockoffs are also sold online on numerous websites that do not make any mention of the fact that they're not authorized dealers selling the real thing. They describe it as the Wassily chair and some even say it was designed by van der Rohe, when actually it's a piece of junk. So just be careful! Most of the time you get what you pay for.
Oops, Breuer. Not van der Rohe. Duh.
Liana, can we see a full picture of that watercolor painting in the first picture? It looks awesome!
I've never seen one of these before I started browsing AT. Are they comfortable?
They are comfortable, Dragynphyre.
Lovely home! I love the gallery wall! Fantastic!
No, they are not comfortable. We got rid of the two we had (real ones) because no one wanted to sit in them.
All the blood rushes to your bottom...not comfy!
I got a knock-off for $15 on craigslist. I love it. Everyone fights over who gets to sit in it because it is the perfect lounge chair.
Mine is very comfortable - not as comfy as a fat overstuffed couch, but perfectly adequate. I have a friend who chooses it over my Eames lounge and IKEA couch when he comes over to watch a movie, so it must be a matter of taste.
It's also beautiful, easy to move, very light and unobtrusive visually, and consistently stylish over its 85 year career!
