A Modern Courtyard

A Modern Courtyard

Watching Dwell's show on the Fine Living Network, we caught a glimpse of this home in Austin, Texas with a modern glass courtyard. (Apologies for the quality of the photos, which we snapped from our TV set.) We love the idea of using courtyards to naturally light a space and divide it into living sections. In this home, two brothers share a live/work space that's divided by this glassed-in bridge...

The courtyard allows daylight to infiltrate the core of the building, cutting down on electric lighting needs and contributing to a home's energy efficiency. Courtyards also integrate interior spaces with the surrounding landscape, a feature that's often lacking in modern homes. In this space, the glass walls separate the water feature from the interior, reflecting and refracting light from the pools.
