Modernism in Maine: LIFE Magazine 1969

With Thanksgiving just a day away and winter weather on the horizon, we just had to share this lovely winter home. Another vintage find from Google's LIFE Magazine archive, this 1969 Maine home reminds us of ski chalets we've stayed in all over New England — but with a few quirks. Follow the jump to see our favorite elements...

The open living room has a very nice clerestory window and wood ceiling but thank goodness carpet has come a long way from these orange floors. We're not sure exactly what the graphic pieces on the floor are — maybe a stool, maybe a table...

We love this shot of the kitchen with simple storage cubes and a large built-in sculptural knife block. We don't have a lot of space for a countertop knife block and this seems like a great idea — practical function and it looks cool, too!

If only we had a picture to show what the view is like through that amazing upper window! We love how the house sits into the hillside and check out that integrated wood storage. Just watch out for the icicles — might make chopping wood a little more adventurous. Although lovely to look at, those icicles are proof that modern insulation has also come a long way since the 60's.
