We've haven't been shy about our love for the home improvement projects taken on by the Minnesota maven, Splatgirl. Her last tile project left us speechless (literally) and we bowed at her DIY feet again with her concrete countertops tutorial and wall mounted lighting. This time she's back and we're more than a little smitten.
Though this new bathroom project isn't yet finished, we don't blame her for stopping part way. The time and effort spent sitting on the floor working with such small pieces is unthinkable (mainly because once you calculate it you'll never want to actually want to follow through) and it has amazing results.
If there's one thing on the internet you should see, it's the step by step process of her handiwork! Make sure you stop by Modern in MN for the steps of the progression thus far (though we're actually quite partial to it's current state!).

Amazing - She truly is an artist with tile!
Wow wow wow!!! I LOVE this!
That shower she did had me drooling for weeks, and this bathtub literally made me gasp in awe and delight. It is just the obsessive kind of work I go weak in the knees for...
really truly love that tile work. i want to duplicate that in my non-existent home that i own. one small suggestion: i would put a plain white shower curtain in there to really make that tilework stand out, instead of competing with the colorful curtain in there now.
This is amazing! I love it so much.
I actually like the way it looks right now, "spilling" out onto the floor. I would finish the rest of the floor with plain white tile. I agree with twelve about the white shower curtain... also white walls, fixtures, accessories! Let it shine.
I agree with farmhouse... finish it with white! That would be so amazing.
Hey, thanks for the love!
The "spilling" as farmhousemoderne so appropriately put it, is on purpose. What you see is the finished product.
What you can't see is the opposite wall where I intend to continue several of the rows from the floor up to about mid-wall height.
Looks like good work but.... not a fan.
very creative!!
Looks great. Won't the edges get chipped if you leave them like that?
i <3 this!!!
Wow. Just wow. Girl crush.
I'm loving this, but don't understand how the tiles can just sit like that without moving, cracking, etc... I wouldn't like the tile being on a different level than the rest of the floor. It should be completed with something plain.
I like the appearance of the tile, but is it a tripping hazard on the floor?
Great idea!
How'd you get that grout line so clean and even around the edges of the tile?
This is FANTASTIC! I agree that I'd like to see a plain white shower curtain in there....The tile work is so amazing that you don't really need much more in terms of color and pattern. Great job!!!
Awesome!
Thanks for the comments all. The free edges of the tiles are also grouted, and with a bevel in the same way a transition strip connects one type of flooring to another. From my blog post about it, this is why I said the grout had to be "meticulously detailed", both to remove it from the gaps between the rows and to get it into a nice clean, even line with a smooth bevel around the edges of the tiles. A flat bladed screwdriver ended up being the winning tool.
I've road tested what I'm calling this "live edge" technique for several years in our master bath and it has not presented any wear or use issues.
