When designing or renovating a kitchen, it seems that lately, if there is sufficient room, there definitely is an island. It's become a staple of larger kitchens, no matter what the overall style of the room is - as these examples show, this piece works seamlessly in both uber modern and warmly traditional spaces...

Used for both food prep and casual dining, this workhorse of a piece defines much of the overall design direction of the room due to its central location and large size, whether its got traditional vintage style or is defined by clean edged modern lines and materials. Which look do you prefer?

Traditional:
Industrial Kitchen, House To Home
White Kitchen, Seattle Homes Mag

Modern:
Gray and Yellow Kitchen, House To Home
Tonia Kim's Kitchen, Kitchens.com
