I'm all about contrast in design; when something sleek and contemporary cozies up to something vintage or antique, my heart's all a-flutter. Lately, I've been loving the iteration of this look in which antique chairs (the more opulent, the better) grace a modernly-furnished space.
In a fabulous Copenhagen library featured in Bo Bedre (above), luxurious antique chairs are right at home surrounded by modern furniture, light fixtures, and books.
This ornate occasional chair looks luxe in a rich plum velvet, but sits just so in the black-and-white space.
The rest of the furnishings in this space are more traditional, and the black and white chair doesn't stand out so much, but the overall effect is contemporary thanks to the bold rug, tulip table, and black upholstery.
Just, wow. Black upholstered dining chairs with a traditional shape look perfect around a shiny, sculptural brass dining table.
In this teeny-tiny studio apartment from 2013's Small Cool Contest, an antique grey chair is right at home surrounded by ornate molding, while the modern art, pops of color, and irreverently combined styles place Stephanie's home firmly in the 21st century.
Here, gold-and-white dining chairs are joined by a Mid-century pedestal table and chair, and it works perfectly.
And just to show that literally anything looks fantastic and fitting around a tulip table, here's another example: rustic timber chairs with floral upholstery, looking perfectly at home.
The ornate side chair (and table) at the back of this room bring a classic feel to a room largely furnished by modern pieces.
Antique chair in modern settings— what do you say?
