We've heard mixed reviews of the Sliding Door Company from lovers and haters. We've never used them ourselves, but we do think their website is a great resource for inspiration. Our recent post on pocket doors sent us looking for modern alternatives, and this company offers a few ideas...

Using frosted glass doors divides a large space without blocking light from the windows.

If you need to add more privacy to a loft space at the top of the stairs, sliding doors can partition the area without walling it off completely.

Locations can be found throughout the US (read the AT:LA review here). The Sliding Door Company's Chicago showroom is located at 221 W. Ohio Street in Chicago.

Pricing? The Sliding Door Company quoted us $10,000 on a 3-panel unit for a 8' x 9' wall.
Yes, the pricing tended to be on the high side of things. But what struck me more than anything else about their NYC showroom was the SLEAZE factor. I really felt like I was in one of those Times Square electronic stores with the heavy sales tactics and the gum-popping blase attitude.
I wonder if Dirtt would do residential sliders?
You can by Johnson Hardware's multipass hardware and buy your own doors - much, much more affordable!

The above information regarding pricing is absolutely false. A 3-panel system for an 8ft x 9ft wall will run approx. $2,400.00--The Sliding Door Company offers a very affordable solution with the highest quality materials!
HORRIBLE ACROSS THE BOARD - CUSTOMER SERVICE, QUALITY, WARRANTY ETC...THEY DONT STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT, THEY DELIVER AND ONCE INSTALLED YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN AND DO NOTHING BUT INCUR EXTRA FEES TO MAKE THEIR PRODUCT FUNCTION.
JUST 3 MONTHS AFTER MY INSTALLATION AND SEVERAL
COMPLAINTS ON THERE POORLY CONSTRUCTED AND FABRICATED PRODUCT, THEY REFUSE TO REPAIR OR REPLACE DEFECTIVE PARTS ONLY 3 MONTHS YOUNG (BRAND NEW!!!! IF I WAS COMPLAINING OR ASKING FOR SERVICE AFTER 2 YEARS OR SO, I COULD SEE THEIR ARGUMENT) WITHOUT CALLING AN INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR IN AT YOUR EXPENSE. THIS IS ONLY 3 MONTHS INTO ME OWNING THESE DOORS, SO WHO KNOWS HOW THEIR PRODUCT WILL WEAR AND WHAT CONDITION THEY WILL BE IN AT 5 OR 10 YEARS
FROM NOW...AND IT'S DISTURBING TO KNOW THAT I AM ON MY OWN, AT MY OWN EXPENSE TO FIX A BRAND NEW PRODUCT THAT NOBODY HAS ANY KNOWLEDGE OF HOW TO FIX OR ANY ACCESS TO SPARE PARTS BESIDES THE SLIDING DOOR COMPANY. THEY DID SEND ONE OF THEIR GUYS TO REPAIR ONE TIME -- AND I HAD TO HELP THE GUY, HE COULDN'T EVEN DO IT ALONE...I AM 200% UNSATISFIED AND WOULD NOT REFER OR SUGGEST ANYONE DEAL WITH THE SLIDING DOOR COMPANY OR PURCHASE THEIR PRODUCT. HORRIBLE
CUSTOMER SERVICE AND AN OVERALL ROBBERY...NOT TO MENTION THE OVERALL POOR QUALITY OF THEIR PRODUCT OR LACK OF SUPPORT IOR CARE OR EVEN INTEREST IN REPAIR..MY EXPERIENCE AND PERSONAL STORY AND EXPERIENCE IS LONGER AND MORE IN DEPTH AND DISTURBING THAN I AM WRITING HERE...FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME WITH ANY QUESTIONS, I WOULD BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO SHARE MY UNPLEASANT EXPERIENCE IN EFFORT TO PROTECT ANY CONSUMER FROM THEM!
@JuicyK8: any recommendations on where to get just the doors? I'm having a hard time tracking that down.
@spazio755: Care to go into a bit more detail? I've found their prices to be good and have seen good reviews, I was thinking of going with them. What broke for you that they couldn't fix? Are there other reasons why you think their quality is poor, or just from something breaking? Did they install it, or an independent contractor? Also, while I can understand your frustration, please go easy on the caps; makes it incredibly difficult to read.
Hello All!
I have a tiny contemporary alcove studio and couldn't stand looking at my bed so I set out to find the perfect room divider. Well I soon found out that there's not much out there that is contemporary.
The Sliding Door Company was interesting BUT way out of my price range.
I happened upon a company right on the UWS that sells a room divider that has similar look but is a fraction of the cost.
I love my divider and you should check them out too!
They were nice and easy to deal with and way less expensive than the SDC.

We purchased four Sliding Door Company 3x8 doors to divide a 12 foot wide room about 3 years ago to create a second bedroom for our one bedroom Manhattan apartment. The outdoor window was on the bedroom side so the doors did a great job of bringing light into the living room while keeping the bedroom private.
We have since moved to a house in Connecticut, and have the doors in storage. We paid $2,800, If anyone is interested in these doors for $1,200, let me know! davepacker@hotmail.com
Purchased two barn door style doors for my Jack-and-Jill bathroom, closet doors for my master bedroom and swinging french type doors for my linen closets in hallway.
Here are my reviews on overall experience (scale of 1 to 10)...
Website: 8
First contact with salesperson on phone: 6 (she sounded very busy and distracted; rushed to give directions and store hours)
Visit to showroom:
Appearance - 9 (really nice showroom in Studio City; a lot to see and choose from)
Salesperson knowledge and overall experience with her - 10 (Jennifer was very helpful and knowledgable - made up for the mediocre first impression over the phone. Gave us great design ideas we hadn't considered).
Price/cost: 8 (including installation, everything came to just under $6,000. Not a fortune, but not cheap. Looked at other options that were more cost effective and ultimately decided to go with this company and their doors since they have a good reputation and a nice product)
Delivery time: 9 (the closets doors and barn doors were delivered and installed within 10 days... just had to wait for the custom swinging doors that took 7 weeks; worth the wait though as they look beautiful)
Product: 10 (couldn't be happier with the quality - make my home look much "fresher")
Overall rating: 8.5
Thank you The Sliding Door Company and everyone involved in the design, sales and installation process. You all were very professional and a pleasure to work with.
Had custom Sliding Door Co install sliding doors for an eight foot closet opening with matching swing doors for coat closet and bath. The laminated glass is fantastic because it is completely private but looks translucent and light passes through perfectly. I couldn't be more pleased.
Had a good experience with Paul Fennel from the San Fran office. I live in Arizona and would need to ship the doors, which added an extra $500. Although the doors are pretty, I decided to look for stain-able wooden door options. No luck yet on a local carrier, but am exploring decorplanet.com, decodoors.com and some other places. My project is a 12 foot wide room divider with bypass door system. Sliding doors could do it for about $2500, however I believe I can save a significant amount by ordering the doors from one of the above mentioned places, then getting a track and hardware from Johnsons.com. A carpenter/installer could install track and tweak doors and space as needed for about $500.
