Paula Hayes are by far the most amazing, but COME ON $15,000?!!!! If I could find hand-blown glass terrariums, I could sell those suckers for the cost of the materials and time. Easy to plant with tweezers, etc.

I've got a black-thumb. I could kill silk plants. But still, I wanted some sort of plant-life in my home; preferably one I wouldn't be able to kill easily with my above mentioned mad-skillz. Also, I needed something that my cats wouldn't destroy, eat, or destroy by eating. Terrariums seemed the way to go.

I went to www.etsy.com, which tends to be my first place for all things. I found kits (I'm a packrat and have plenty of containers and jars) for under $20 and snatched one up lickety-split. I got it within a few days.

Terrariums are the ultimate in princess, ADD, zen gardening. Instant gratification and I can do it within the comfort of my air conditioned home. Also, they take one or two misty spritzes a month. I can totally do that!

Btw, the one from Anthropologie is just the larger version of the Pop Deluxe one (which is also available on that site for, oh, $60 less). Very typical of Anthropologie to overcharge. :)

OMG! I totally bought one of those Funk-shui moss bowls!!!!!!!!!!! I got it for my mum for mother's day! SHE LOVED IT!!!!!!!!! Go to wynndrew.etsy.com if you need a cool alternative, seriously. And I totally agree about going out to Etsy first before blowing so much cash. Who really needs to add more stress to the recession drama? I have to check out that benjrs shop now! Yay!

These are pretty but sooo expensive. You can find really cute terrarium-type things at thrift stores for under $5. Cookie jars, large vases, large candle holders, cake trays, etc.

I have been thinking about getting a terrarium for my office desk for a while - there isn't a lot of natural light, so most plants won't fare well, but terrariums seem to be much heartier! There are also a lot of much less pricey options on etsy that I have been browsing through recently. Steamed Glass makes very unique ones from out upcycled incandescent light bulbs: http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=7223482, and there are several sellers who use interesting apothecary jars of verying size, or even offer make-your-own terrarium sets. :)

i have to give etsy seller madebymavis a shout out here as i feel that she should have been included in the photos above. she makes lovely hills of mossy grass in jars that are so fun to look at! i have yet to purchase one from her as i am determined to make my own, but they are so unique and very reasonably priced. none of this $15,000 hoo ha!

If anyone wants to DIY and doesn't know how green their thumb is, head to a thrift store. I always see simple round fishbowls on the houseware shelves supercheap. No, not as cool as these, but a super low-risk purchase.
