Trundle beds are a smart choice for shared or small bedrooms, but we've never seen a trundle like this before. It's the work of custom furniture maker Jonathan Szczepanski and we've been admiring the clean, modern lines as well as the major capacity for storage.
Since the room this bed was designed to be in is narrow, the extra trundle bed was created to emerge from the end of the bed rather than the side which is more traditional. Storage is built into the sides and space is saved with a clever inlaid ladder. It's almost like having bunk beds with tons of bonus storage space.

Shaw's Original Fir...
for once, I disagree- giant ugly box. Sorry! I agree the idea is innovative, the storage is awesome, but the overall impact- whooooaaaa giant box.
My compliments to the craftsman. However, it's so huge that it just doesn't work in this small room which is ironic as that probably is why this was designed in the first place.
looking at the pic only illustrates that is too large for this room: it's too high over the window and practically overlapping the door jam.
I doubt this is a modern home which doesn't help this modern trundle one bit. But don't get me wrong, big ups for the clever use of design and storage. I would love to see version 2.0
The fact that the room seems overwhelmed by the size of this bed is precisely why it's needed - it's probably a tiny room in desperate need of storage. Constructing this bed was one clever way to achieve that.
There are times in life when what looks best in a room isn't the priority. I have reluctantly learned this lesson as my daughter has grown. She is only 20 months old, but already my priorities have shifted. Whatever helps me get through our day smoothly takes priority over anything else, no matter how good it looks. It's all about having a place for every item so that my home doens't look like a tornado hit it. Even if that picture of order only lasts for the brief minute between when I wake up and walk down the hall to get my daughter out of her crib!
I recently tried to look for a modern white trundle, and there's hardly anything out there! It may be big, but it looks beautifully crafted and the kids seem to love it. Kudos!
I think it's interesting, but I don't think it helps with space-saving or practicality. Is the trundle meant for everyday use (I see 2 kids)? How do you close it with bedding on? Since it's lofted anyway, why not just get bunk beds?
not a fan of the pointed corners and edges. giant ugly box.
i think it's really neat. i totally would have loved something like this when i was a kid. the only thing i wonder is why he didn't build more storage into the "second" level (first level being the trundle, third being the mattress on top). but maybe there's storage in the round blue holes? overall, really neat though.
i am a big proponent of trundles, lofts, etc...
but this is just big and weird. a single-story version would have been cool. a trundle version OR a storage-under version would have been cool. but all three? way too much. way too high.
i do love the concept of the climbing holes.
meh. it's just an opinion.
I do like the concept - but I guess the aesthetic look would be a personal opinion. - i wonder how heavy the storage lid is, at that leverage point I can see smashed fingers being a problem - especially with my clumsy son. But I love seeing things like this - its great inspiration to help me solve some of my own space issues.
I love it, and guess that most kids would, too. I agree with 5spotter on this one--if the structure is functional and fun for kids, perfect aesthetics are less important.
That thing is gigantic and odd. And it looks like it would be awkward to get down off of it.
I am a Big fan of Jonathan's Work. I especially like the "Entry Sideboard" he made with the hidden compartment on top for keys etc.
As for this piece, Well I like it.
Kids like "Big" stuff. And with kids it needs to be sturdy. Hey not everybody likes Frank Lloyd Wright's stuff. I happen to Love it. I enjoy clean lines and places to "hide" stuff so it's not all out in the open. It makes me feel like James Bond with all the hidden compartments. Great Job!! Keep on designing!
