Welcome mats are the first taste a vistor gets of your home. Not only are welcome mats meant to be the initial sign of welcome they're also supposed to actually serve a purpose. There's nothing worse than a visitor tracking dirt and mud all over your house, so if that's an issue for you — make sure you choose one that will actually serve as more than a mere hello.
If you're looking for your welcome mat to also do some cleaning duties make sure you select one that's durable and made from rough materials such as spun vinyl or coconut fiber. Coconut fiber is the most common and typically comes with a latex backing that holds everything in place and keeps the mat from slipping around. These types of mats will provide a durable space to keep shoes nice and clean before entertaining the house.
If you're not too concerned with scraping shoes clean, the sky is the limit! We really love pebble door mats because they add just a touch of sophistication without being over the top.

Ours is sadly the lame black, felty one that our landlord provided. We need something purtier. Love that one from Utica Home!!
I love that "Come in/Go away" one. A different message for each direction you'd travel over it. Brill.
Shouldn't the keys wallet cell phone mat be facing the other way?
Britomart—that's what I was thinking too.
My mats also have to be cat proof. I lost some colorful orange Crate and Barrel mats to my two cats :(
I don't have a doormat (I live in an apartment) but have been thinking of getting one. I love that sunny "Welcome Home" mat!!

Like the look and idea of the flip-flop door mat. Does anyone have one? How do they last?
Hey, Chic Done Cheap, I live in an apartment, and I have a doormat! Actually, I have two. One right outside our front door, one inside. It keeps the guests from tracking in too much dirt. :)
Jen - I was wondering that, too. There are some good reviews on the site if you click the link provided and scroll down.
I totally agree with you, Britomart...I would love the Keys, Wallet, Cell Phone one as a reminder to check my coat pockets/purse for everything before I leave the house!
I think I've seen the flip flop mat at my local Bed, Bath & Beyond store. I noticed in a few of the reviews on the site that people were disappointed in the colors of their mat, if you picked it up in your local store, you could go through the pile and pick your favorite color combination!
Love the pebble mat and the abstract "grass" one.
I live in an apartment and don't currently have a door mat. :(
We have the flipflop doormats. We've had them 2-3 years or maybe longer, and I really love them. The only thing is the color has rubbed off on our deck somewhat.
I love the Ocean door mat, I wonder if you could make on that was cheaper than $80?

interesting factoid - the 'come in' one, when flipped over, reads 'go away'
I have that Chilewich mat, but in black!
i'm looking for a similar door mat idea to place under my dogs' food and water bowls, need it to cover about 3 feet. Enough for three bowls, ideas?
hey wait, the flip flop mat is 3 feet, perfect!
of course the one that caught my attention is 10x more expensive than the rest.
