I read somewhere that having fruit trees makes you a truly landed person- but I'd like to put forth the argument that a waffle iron can do the trick just as well...
Every once in a while there's a moment when I feel, "Yes. This is my home and it is perfect." Such an occasion happened this morning, the occasion of the first batch of waffles from my hand-me-down waffle iron. I adore waffles, but finding good ones at restaurants, let alone finding good vegan ones, has proved highly frustrating. But now- fresh, hot, perfect, & cheap, in the comfort of my own home! Add hot tea in the ninja mug from Jenn, my splurge of a subscription to Vogue, and my new hand-me-down Ikea coffee table, and that's breakfast, and suddenly, bliss, thanks to the perfect combination of chance and choice.
What elements, or moments, have made you feel like you're truly home, even in a temporary, rented home? A cheap celebratory bottle of "Champagne" in your grandma's antique glasses? Just enough space & dishes to cook Thanksgiving dinner for friends?

White Enamel Flatwa...
Having friends over for brunch on a sunny sunday, and doing the dishes with The Kinks and The Rolling Stones blasting out at full volume. Then I wonder «Could it get better?».
A fire in the fireplace, or more exactly, sitting around a crackling fire on Thanksgiving night, after all the hubbub is over and the dishwasher is running, just catching up with family and friends.

This a great blog that features waffled things normally not waffled. I love the look of the sunny side up waffled eggs.
Rolling out biscuit dough (with my huge bottle of olive oil, b/c I don't own a rolling pin) early Sat or Sun morning, in my pj's, while listening to Ella Fitzgerald's Best of the Songbooks. What a fabulous way to start the day!
Oooo do you have a vegan waffle recipe? I happen to be getting a waffle iron for my bday next week and i'd love to try vegan ones.
Haaa! I notmally don't show my husband anything remotely related to design sites, but this will be the exception. We moved around 4 times before unpacking our wedding gifts (one of which was a waffle iron) and once we finally did my husband he finally felt like we had grown up and had a real home :) We use it pretty much every weekend.
I love the look of that waffle. Which waffle iron?
OOh yum! I have that same heart shaped waffle iron. It's the best.
We've got 9 apple trees, two pear trees, and one plum tree. And a waffle attachment for the George Forman grill that I've never tried. LoL.
esmrussell - "Vegan with a Vengeance" and "Vegan Brunch", both by Isa Chandra Moskowitz, have some amazing waffle recipes. VwaV has been out for a few years now...your library may very well have a copy.
This was a very thought provoking post. I've never really felt at home anywhere except for the bungalow where I spent my childhood (2-13). In my adult life I've always lived in rental apartments and knew they were transitory. While hubs and I adore our current apt. I've never fully moved in; a corner of the bedroom is occupied by boxes of books, etc. stacked to the ceiling. Hubs moved in in 48 hours. Me? Well, it's been six years, so maybe seven years?
Btw, I love my waffle iron - a Waring from Costco; it's the kind you have to turn when a signal sounds. It's a bitch to clean, though.
Anywhere I live where my little family is all together and safe (me, my cat, and my two ferrets), I always feel at home.
emsrussel- I use this waffle recipe from Vegan YumYum, but with plain yogurt (or almond milk + apple cider vinegar): http://tiny.cc/9agh0
LeahDC- I'm honored!
icarus- All I know is it's made by Krups & works excellently (even to a waffle novice like me).
FengShuiByFishgirl- Someday!
