Moon Bear

We love giving books as gifts as much as we love supporting a worthy cause, so Moon Bear is a slam dunk. Brenda Z. Guiberson gives young readers a glimpse into the daily lives of moon bears, or Asiatic black bears, in this beautiful book illustrated by Caldecott medalist Ed Young.

Moon Bear begins with the sun rising over the Himalayas and follows one bear through the landscape and seasons as she looks for food and fun, hibernates and builds her nest high in the trees. The book concludes with a two page note from Guiberson (the author has written many meticulously researched children's books about animals) featuring photographs and encouraging kids to help the endangered species. My three-year-old enjoyed the illustrations and the rhythm of the simple and sweet prose, and we both fell in love with moon bears. Moon Bear was published in partnership with Animals Asia Foundation and a portion of proceeds goes to conservation efforts. Kids can learn more about moon bears at Animals Asia's website.
